Works great!

I use it to temporarily record when I am not at home. Mostly 99% of the time to view DVDs and rerecord my own movies and DVDs. This includes transferring my VHS recordings to DVD.It is great to have both DVD and VHS in one machine. I still have about 200 VHS tapes that I view on occasion. Some movies are not available on DVD yet, and this feature [VHS] is very convenient to have handy. The only trouble I have had is that occasionally the cable people change the channel settings without any notification. It is not that big an issue since I do not use it for that very much. The unit tunes in all but a few of the channels that I would like available [about 98%].Sold to me used/demo with a free two year extended warranty.Very happy with this Adorama purchase and any follow up that had to be down from my or their end.I would recommend it[...]

RDR-VDX655, a super device

This is a terrific unit. I purchased a second unit recently and had to settle for a refurbished by Sony model as there were no others in stock available for purchase. Easy to use, especially if you have cable, this device is perfect for those who don't want to toss all the VCR collections or make digital copies of VCR tapes. It has a particularly good digital tuner built in and upgrades most DVD's to 1080i. A good product for the money if you can find one for sale.

Disappointing

I was hoping this unit would be the "Holy Grail" of combo player/recorders, but its not. I now understand it is discontinued. When connected to my 1080p LCD TV via HDMI you cannot use the SetUp or System Menus! They briefly flash across the screen but then you get a totally gray screen so you cannot see the menus! The unit displays correctly via composite and component connections. The workaround is to press "System Menu", you get a brief display of the "System Menu then the Gray Screen. At this point, shut the unit off and then restart, the menu then displays. My setup is as follows: 1. Charter Digital HD Cable Service to a Charter/Motorola HD PVR, 2. connection to the RDR-VXD655 via composite and coaxial inputs, (this is a crime! I get beautiful HD from my PVR but Sony and all other manufacturers REFUSE to allow you to connect and record in anything other than SD!! 3. HDMI to my 1080p LCD I bought and returned the product to Amazon.com as defective. Hope the next generation of this unit fixes these issues.

Good Specs

I bought this unit to be compatable with my old Sony Digital8 camcorder and my new Sony TV LCD Flat Panel, when I got home and hooked it up the the setup menu would not work, took it back to Best Buy and they said it was defective and gave me a new unit, I got it home and the setup menu still will not work (using HDMI cable). I tried to hook it up with S-Video cable and it works. This is the 2nd unit that HDMI hookup dose not work on. I am on my way back to Best Buy for them to check this one out and maybe find one that works.
