When it comes to professional photography, Tiffen Color-Grad filters stand out as one of the most utilized types of filters in the industry. These filters empower photographers to either create captivating illusions or enhance the authenticity of their shots. They are particularly popular for their ability to inject vibrant color into a dull sky, alter specific colors in a scene for a desired special effect, enhance existing colors, or create subtle color drama. Moreover, they are instrumental in achieving a more balanced exposure in situations with uneven lighting.
Tiffen Color-Grads are available in a broad spectrum of sizes and colors, and are crafted with either a soft edge or a hard edge. The transition area in soft edge filters varies between 1/2" to 2" wide before reaching full density, depending on the filter size. On the other hand, hard edge filters have a transition area approximately 1/4" to 1/2" wide before reaching full density. As a special order, attenuated gradients are also available, where the transition area spans the entire filter, starting clear and reaching maximum density at the opposite end.
The 4x5.650 (Panavision size) Tiffen Color-Grad filter, a rectangular-shaped filter, is designed with a horizontal orientation. The terms 'horizontal' and 'vertical' are significant as they refer to the filter's position in relation to the camera when the grad line is horizontal.
The choice between a "hard" edge or "soft" edge Tiffen Color-Grad filter largely depends on the subject matter, its surroundings, and the type of lens used. Telephoto lenses utilize a small portion of the filter, hence a hard edge is recommended for long lenses as a soft edge could get lost in the image. Conversely, wide-angle lenses make objects appear smaller, making a soft edge ideal for short focal lengths as a hard edge gradient could appear as a harsh straight line. Soft edges and attenuators are perfect for subtle blending with irregular-shaped subjects or unusual lighting conditions.
