Questions & Answers

Shopper : What is the range of diameters that this filter supports?GAVIN S : I have it on a 8" Meade lx 90. It is a nice snug fitJUAN J : only for 8" meades and celestronsMICHAEL C : The nominal diameter (with only the standard 1/8 foam trim) is 9 1/8" and fits snugly on a Celestron Edge HD 8". The adjustable screws (3) will go in about 1/4" farther so the minimum diameter is approximately 8 5/8". There are also some extra foam tabs if you need them, 3 pcs 1/16" and 3 pcs 1/8".
Shopper : Does this filter out about 99.9% of harm UV and Infrared when viewing the sun? I don't want to get blind. Also, will it hold good at the end of my 8" Celestron SCT? Thanks GusDEAN L : Filtering the UV and IR rays? Yes, it adequately does that...retinal damage will not be an issue as long as the filter stays attached. One can see the sunspots with this type of filter, however, not solar H-alpha wavelengths...much more expensive. Will it work with a SCT? I don't see why it wouldn't. I have a Tele Vue Pronto refractor, however, so I can't truly verify. There are thumb screws that tighten to edge of the tube hood. If you pull on it, it's will come off easily, but there's plenty of friction to normally keep the filter on during normal conditions. My biggest worry would be some kid pulling it off.Ken R : Gus, I own the 4 inch filter and have used it several times on the end of my 90 MM Mak. It fits quite snug once you add the rubber stick tape. I have been able to view multiple sun spots. One recommendation is getting a finder for locating the sun in the eyepiece. I use a Helio Pod which cost about $12.00. It works great to line up the sun before looking in the eyepiece.ANN A : I can only answer the safety part of your question by trusting what the maker and the seller say of the filter which was a resounding, yes, it's safe to use. I allow my students to use it and I would never expose them to anything that was questionable at all. As to whether it would hold on your 8" Celestron, I really don't know the answer to that question. Sorry.ALLYN M : Actually, I haven't used the filter yet, I bought it for the upcoming solar eclipse toward the end of this month and the Venus transit early next month. I ordered early because I thought they might be in short supply if I waited too long.
