Heavy and unusual length . . . but WOWzer!

OK, I'll admit that size and weight do keep me from using this lens more than I could. I'll grab a 35 f/1.8 for walkabout or quick and dirty work, but for serious work this is my go-to. The images it produces are simply stunning. It's the lens I always start with for outdoor portraits or groups (then, down to 28 or up to 105 as needed).

This Lens Might Spoil You

All the good things I've read about this lens are true. It is heavy if you compare it to most nifty fifties, but for anyone used to carrying around a heavy zoom, it should not be an issue. If IQ is top on your list, this lens can't be beat, especially for the price. It's not just sharp. It brings every nuance you hope to get from a quality optic.

Basically perfect.

It?s huge. Pretty heavy. You can?t shoot it with one hand (well I can?t). Now that?s out of the way. Sharpest lens I?ve ever used. And it gives off this ?it? flavor in its images - not sure how to describe it, but there?s a certain beauty and elegance to the images. Colors render beautifully! Autofocus is also just fine. I used it for a sports event - as I don?t own a separate 35 or 24-70 (I have an aversion to the standard zoom), and this lens worked fine to shoot Pickleball.

Monster lens

It?s big. It?s heavy. But boy, it is magic. I was leaning towards the 35mm but after watching a review comparing the two I knew I had to go with the monster 40mm.

On the wider side of normal

I have used Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART Lens on the D4 Nikon, and I love the results. I haven?t used the lens on my D5 or the D850 camera. I am sure the results would be as good. The contrast is perfect. It focuses instantaneously. I love the bokeh, and the lens is sharp as a tack. I used a ?three-stop' neutral density filter because I shoot with the lens wide open. I am having fun with this lens?my first time using a 40mm lens in a 35mm film format. Technically a 40mm focal length is within the ?normal focal' range in the 35mm format between 40mm and 58mm. I have discovered a ?New Brave World' in 40 millimeters.

No buyer's remorse

Pros: Sharp images, even wide open, exceeded my expectations. Balanced well on Sony a7III body. Colors appear accurate, likewise the contrast is excellent. Appealing soft out of focus areas. Cons: Heavy, much like a Cine lens, not your casual all day vacation lens. Sometimes misses eye focus using Sony a7III. Draws attention, but that is only important if you are a street shooter. Summary: Questionable value at release price, but excellent value at Adorama price as of May 2022. Easy to hand hold and no concerns about shooting wide open. If sharpness is your goal then the lens will not disappoint. Combined with NISI Ti UV filter for excellent results. Highly recommended.

Superior image quality with fast focusing speed

I been using this lens on Z6II for almost a month and these is what I think so far: - it gives tack sharp image. When I set the sigma Lens At f/1.8 it could produce image as sharp as I could get from Nikon Z 85mm @ f/1.8. - Autofocus (even with FTZ adapter) is very fast. It gives no problem tracking peoples eyes in AF-C mode with almost equal speed as native Z mount lens. - Only draw back would be it?s size and weight.

Sharp heavy lenses

The lens is heavier than expected, although several reviews online have mentioned the weight. The lens is heavier than my FE 24-240. But looks like a solid build. Pictures are as sharp as described and I will definitively give a 5 star for that, although I have had not much time for a through testing. This is not he lens you want for everyday outdoor activity (attention neck pain) but when you want clear crisp and sharp pictures there is no compromise in it.

This is a first rate product in every respect. There were no surprises.

I purchased this product because I have other products of the same type from the same manufacturer. This product is the best of it's type made by any manufacturer. All of the specifications are first rate and the build quality is some of the best in the world.

Great lens! The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 Art lens is a joy to shoot and a worthy investment for a variety of photos. The lens arrived as scheduled and was well packaged. I would not hesitate to order from Adorama again in the future.

Uncompromised Excellence!

I had spent several weeks reading about this lens before I decided to purchase it. I'm a landscape photographer and 90% of my photographs are interior forest captures, primarily of waterfalls in the Appalachian mountains. I use the Sony A7 RII and A7 RIII cameras. I already own the 16-35 f/2.8 GM and the 24-70 f/2.8 GM which both are great zoom lenses. As far as primes, I use the 35mm 1.4 Sony Zeiss, the 50mm 1.4 Sony Zeiss and the 55mm 1.8 Sony Zeiss.. What I felt I needed was a great prime lens that performed at least at the level or beyond the level particularly of the 50mm 1.4. Because I make many of my photographs just after sunrise or when the sun is low in the horizon, natural light is low, and in many of the locations there are dense tree canopies shading the area. Based on my experience, the 1.4 aperture suits these conditions more favorably. While I really appreciate the ther two GM zoom lenses I use, I prefer using the faster primes based on the lighting and image quality. In several instances, I have found myself in an uncompromising location while composing a capture due to the physical constraints of my location...the 35mm was a bit too wide with the subject too distant...the 50mm brought me too close to the subject. I felt I needed a lens with an in-between focal length that would perform at least on a comparable level or better. I made the decision to buy the Sigma 40mm 1.4 Art lens and am so pleased to confirm this lens is a complete winner. This lens, along with only a very few others, rates as one of the most sharp, if not the most sharp and well made lens built to date. There are no compromises in the design and build quality of this lens. It is clearly obvious that Sigma knew what they wanted to accomplish and they set out to accomplish it to the very best of their ability. This lens is a first rate performer in a unique class of distinction. Aside from sharpness, the color rendering of this lens is beautifully and richly natural to the eye. Everything about this lens is first rate. Aside from the lens, the strapped carrying case is a nice addition (although I'll probably never use it). As far as lens hoods are concerned, the lens hoods of all the other camera manufacturers pale in comparison to the locking lens hood Sigma designed for this lens. I found it so refreshing for a change to find, appreciate and respect the uncompromised integrity of Sigma's 40mm 1.4 Art especially in an age where other manufacturers constantly scramble and compromise the design of their products to gratify the notions and wants of the conformist fickle masses. Thank you Sigma for your design and release of this winner of a great lens.

Really heavy, like a brick. If Sony comes out with a 40mm 1.4 GM lens, I would no doubt get that instead. It will do for now though.

Incredible lens for indoor events

I use this on my Sony A7iii with the MC-11 adapter. The lens is too big and heavy, but I knew that going in. Once you accept the size/weight, this is an incredible lens. I love this focal length to cover indoor events. Focus is resoanably fast but accurate. Images are sharp and contrasy. The last few events I have used OOC jpgs even though I also shot in RAW - the images were that good in jpg. I mostly shoot wide open indoors and the subject separation is very good. Overall, a fantastic lens. Highly recommended.

Sigma's best prime to date! Biting sharp and incredible wide open performance!

My first copy I got had really bad internal scratches so I replaced it immediately. 2nd one I got was absolutely perfect. I really wish adorama would not do replacements with UPS ground shipping when I initially paid for faster shipping. I bought the lens when it was on sale for one day so it was a darn good deal! Anyhow, the lens. This lens is truly stunning and is one of the sharpest lenses you can ever put on your DSLR, an optical gem in ever way and I don't really say that lightly. I own the Zeiss Milvus 25mm 1.4 ZF.2 as well and THAT lens is an optical perfection in so many ways. My sigma 35 1.4 art and Tamron SP 35 1.8 vc cannot compare to the sigma 40 1.4 on wide open performance and stopped down performance. The lens profile applied in lightroom really fixes the vignetting when shot wide open. Focus accuracy is dead on and no adjustments were needed at all using the sigma dock which I was very happy about. I do know that this lens also suffers from slight focus shift with DSLR's so this lens on a mirrorless would do even better (I don't plan on changing systems for a very long time anyway, I am too invested into my DSLR to want to change and mirrorless has it's own annoying issues). The insane sharpness, contrast and unique rendering with the focal length this lens gives is on another level that i've never seen from another sigma lens. It's bokeh quality is really great and smooth. I wish it would focus a bit closer but one thing I did learn is that using manual focus you can actually focus a bit closer than what you can with auto focus turned on! Chromatic aberrations are virtually non-existent with this lens. The only area it does not shine it really well due to having so much complex glass is lens flare. I have not tried shooting sunsets with it though that's what my Sigma 14-24 2.8 or Zeiss Milvus 25 ZF.2 is for primarily anyway. This 40mm kind of reminds me of the 105 1.4 art that I have as well. VERY pleased with the lens! Bravo Sigma!

OTUS level of performance at a much lower price

No 40mm can touch the performance of this lens...simple as that. Check the lensrenal tests for example. The resolution numbers from center to edge are stunning. This is as good as it gets. Yet it is big but with this performance, you cannot argue with it.

Superb lens.

This lens paired with Nikon d850 is outstanding. Sharpness is off the charts. Had to do a little calibration, which I’ve had to do with most of my Nikon lenses anyway. But once I found the perfect focus setting, it was spot on. My Nikon 85 1.4 was the best lens I’ve owned in terms of sharpness, but this just surpasses the 85. My sigma 40 1.4 now permanently resides in my d850 while I moved my Nikon 85 1.4 to my d500. Both excellent lenses, but the Sigma holds an edge.

Few Compromises

The good: 1) Sharp, like my camera suddenly got 5 more mega pixels. 2) just as accurate focus as native glass, far better than the other half dozen sigma art lenses I own. 3) auto focus is fast enough for portrait work 4) weather sealing 5) on my aps-c cameras this is a 65mm lens, which is a great angle of view for portraits. The bad: 1) it's heavy 2) no IS/OS, which is like almost every other prime. (Canon, where's the IBIS?)

Let the SIGMA 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Sony E, Black, elevate your photography and videography experience. This lens, a part of SIGMA's renowned Art line, is designed with the same high standards and superior optical performance as SIGMA's professional cine lenses, making it a perfect choice for both professional filmmakers and photography enthusiasts.

The 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is SIGMA's first lens specifically developed to meet the high standards of cine lenses, offering a unique perspective that ensures top-notch quality for visual production. This lens also serves as an interchangeable photographic lens, providing versatility for various shooting scenarios.

The lens features an advanced optical design that effectively combines three FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements. This makes it an ultimate large-diameter standard lens that offers both 8K-compatible resolution and beautiful bokeh, enhancing the overall quality of your shots.

Designed to withstand all shooting conditions, the lens features a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens element, along with a dust- and splash-proof structure. This ensures excellent performance even in challenging environments. The high-speed autofocus, powered by the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) with an updated algorithm, captures instantaneous photography movement, making it ideal for dynamic shooting scenarios.
