I purchased this printer in January 2021. It was working fine until last week, september 18,2023. It started printing blank sheets. I am no longer under warranty so I tried solving through HP virtual help. I followed the instructions. The last thing virtual had me to do was go to printer maintenance and clean head. I tried it more than once and received a carriage jam message. Now the printer will not leave that screen. It would not allow me to turn off the normal way so I pushed the power button. When I turned back on it read that I shut down incorrectly, duh. It didn't give me any other option. So I spoke w/a rep. He sent me through some of the same instructions. I went on video w/him so he could see what was happening. I saw that there was a ink link within the printer. He told me to wipe it off. WHAT A MESS. Finally I stopped bc it was too much. The entire call was unsuccessful. HP served me well for 2 years. At the end he tried to sell me a upgraded printer. No. I'm going to get a Dell. A more reliable brand.

This has been the absolute worse printer ever! I purchase ink ALL THE TIME! We use this at home and don't even print on it but several times a week MAYBE and just a couple of pages This past time when I changed it I printed three pages and looked and the ink was half gone! DO BETTER HP! This is a rip off!!

This printer freezes up all the time. Trying to cancel a print job will cause the screen to lock up. Trying to reboot the printer will make it just sit there. If you unplug it and plug the printer back in for a hard reboot, it takes about 5 minutes to calibrate again. The print quality is terrible. For some reason the blue color will not print evenly and leaves lines in the printout. This is after I have already been through each color of ink with a replacement. This printer also sucks up ink. I joined the HP ink program and i replace ink cartridges every couple of months. The only redeeming feature would be that the scanning results are good. it can scan both sides of a page, and will load from the feeder as well as the scanner. Unfortunately, even the scanning can't get a solid positive review because the scanning software from HP makes you log in just to use it. The software also logs you out frequently and you won't be able to use any password manager with it. After 20 years using HP printers at home, I am going to try another brand. This "Printer" pushed me over the edge.

Printing looks ok when I can get it to actually work on occasion. The first HP printer I bought lasted for about 500 sheets of paper and then never worked again. I went and bought this HP printer model at Costco and it is no better than the first. The HP Smart application is not consistent and half the time it says the printer is offline. It has issues with connectivity on a semi-regular basis and when I go to shut it down it just spins and spins until I have to finally unplug it. It also takes forever starting back up and stays in "printer maintenance" mode for an extended period of time. It is pretty noisy and squeaks loudly during the start up as well. This will be the last time I buy any HP product. I got an HP laptop for my wife as a Christmas present in 2021 and the battery warped and broke the case within one year of use.

Worst printer I have ever had! Like many others have said it goes into printer maintenance many of the times it's turned on and I hardly use it! Sometimes it won't even print, when I go to my printer settings it just shows "searching for printer". I have had several cases opened since buying less than a year ago and have spent hours on the phone with support. Last time she told me they're working on a bug with Apple and to check back...really? What good is a warranty when it's bad right out of the box. Now past my 30 days and can't return.

Difficult Printer. So sorry I purchased this one. Not intuitive at all. I still can't get it to print specific pages. I had an Epson before and everything was quite simple. Very very disappointed.

Was a good printer. Was replacement for HP inkjet 7520. Document feeder quit working so HP under warranty replaced with office jet pro 6978. Lost $200+ worth of ink in 7520 when HP replaced with 6978 under warranty with tiny sample cartridges. Now, with very little use in the 6 years or so I have had the 6978 the printer (was only used ocaisionally as VoIP fax machine printer in another room from computers), it started saying Printhead Problems every time I tried to print with it, even with all new HP ink cartridges.

This all-in-one printer was a gift to replace very old (Canon Pixma) because of the additional features of auto feed and better color printing. Have used minimally but all of the features tested and satisfied. One "con" was the install website was worst experience EVER, After more than one hour and 3 different support people, they said MAC not compatible without $200-$600 fix from them and when I paused to consider, they said I wasted their time and abruptly hung up. My daughter completed a manual install on MAC and WIFI and all fine w/o upgrading operating system etc.

I tried to contact support for set-up assistance for officejet pro 6978 to no avail. I am in my 70s and not tech savvy. Literature included with the purchase does not address my situation in which it appears I cannot download HPSmart unless I am connected wirelessly to the printer. Your printers used to include everything necessary to get up and running with a new printer.

I've had this printer about 2 years and it is a constant source of frustration. Can't print a singe page without going through the 10 minute click down. Click down = 10 minutes of the screen saying maintenance, printer clicks and clacks and sounds lick it is running the ink back and forth, THEN if your lucky it will print your page, 20% of the time it will tell you an error has accurred and you have to shut the printer down. Worst part is I bought a cheap HP Envy 6000 printer for our second home and it print circles around the Officejet. HP, I'm one more crappy product purchase away from giving up on y'all

It loves to go into "Printer Maintenance Mode" EVERY SINGLE TIME it's time to print something. At least once per week. This printer sucks because that is required before printing everything, which means it can take up to 10 minutes to print one page.

This is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever owned. It has spent more time being trouble shooted than it has ever spent functioning. I wish I'd taken it right back but being busy it sat around for awhile waiting for a troubleshoot and aged out of warranty. It's probably printed good only a handful of times. We troubleshoot it, print only a few pages, and get another new error. This time it's saying load paper and the proposed solutions aren't helping. I tried restarting and it said I didn't shut it off correct and need to use the power button (which is how I shut it off to begin with). It says ink is low after only a few prints with a new hp cartridge. My last printer NEVER had issues. We got this so we could print over the network but more often I take my print jobs to the library now because this is so unreliable and I am so done with it. I can't express enough how much I've hated this machine and how it has disrupted my productivity.

This printer does a good job, but setting it up is tedious, and not well explaiined in the accompanying documentation. It would also help to have an installation DVD, INCLUDING a user manual.

Works well. Miss separate "scan" icon from previous HP printer and HP Smart does scan but it's slow and there are many things to learn, e.g. cropping.

Constantly freeze and wont shut off with power button and have to unplug to reset. Constantly having to fix printer and cant get any work done. Will randomly drop internet, had to switch to Ethernet to printer and it will still randomly drop connection.

Way too many ink issues, prints low quality or not at all, and costs of ink that do not last or do not perform.

Thank God I canceled my Instant Ink subscription before going on vacation in November of last year. By the time I came back in January, my printer was no longer functioning. I've had this printer since 2017 with minimal issues (I would get some errors once in a while), nothing which I couldn't fix; until now. My printer has succumbed to Printer Failure ?Ox6100004a, a failure which I spent many days trying to get rid of, but to no avail. My last HP Printer lasted me practically my whole childhood, giving out once I reached college. I had similar expectations for its replacement but, it was not meant to be. I honestly don't even want to buy another printer, in general, because one-year warranties offer little to no support. But this experience has personally stained my view on HP printers.

We have had to 6980 a little over a year, it is now out of warrantee. About 3 months ago we started having printing in color. Black works fine. We belong ot HP cartridge service, "Instantlink". New cartridges were sent and installed. No change in printing color material. Tried all the online help suggestions multiple times, cleaning the heads, realignment etc. no luck fixing the problem. No help from HP unless you want to pay a fee.

Great Printer! I had purchased an "Epson Ink Tank (ET 2720) specifically to use for Customer Orders for my Digital Printables Business. I paid nearly $400 for that printer on sale...Got it all hooked up to start printing Customer orders on 110 lb Cardstock. Nope. It jammed every single time. Would NOT feed that paper at all. I tried everything changed settings to "Heavy Paper" Phot Paper Etc...Nope. It would attempt to pick up the Cardstock but couldn't then would continue trying to print with no paper just dumping ink all over inside of the machine. After 4 days I gave up. Repacked and Returned it. I started researching what others use in my line of work and found my research to keep coming back to the HP Officejet Pro 6978. It even says in Specs it can handle 110 lb Cardstock so I bought it. Excellent Price too. I just got it hooked up today and I'm amazed. It Grabs that heavy Cardstock like nothing...prints & sends it right out. I am so relieved I found an affordable printer that can actually handle 110 lb Cardstock. I will note...The 110 lb Cardstock from Michael's Craft Store is Extremely heavy...heavier than other brands of the same weight. This printer will print on the Michael's Cardstock However, upon trying to load a few sheets...it would NOT print saying it was "Jammed" so I uploaded the paper tray and tried just 1 at a time and that seems to be working. I also have 110 lb Cardstock in the Neenah Brand and though it is also 110 lb weight it's no where near as "Heavy" as Michael's Craft Store Cardstock. I am able to load 3-4 Sheets at a time of the Neenah brand and this printer isn't having any problems printing it! I wanted to write a review to help others who may want a Printer that can actually handle Cardstock especially the 110 lb weight. This is a Very Nice heavy Duty Printer at an Affordable Price. It seems well made & durable. Good size touch screen, Nice glass top Flatbed Copier/Scanner. I am impressed HP! Great Product. Thank you!

Needed a new printer for my aunt that she could use for enlarging copies. This one fit the requirements best. The double sided printing was a great bonus to limit wasted paper. Output of both documents and photos are good. Touch screen could be larger. Can be difficult to see/use when multiply options are shown onscreen.

I first purchased an HP Pro Inkjet 6968. I liked the features. The cyan stopped printing. I thought it was just a fluke, so I purchased an HP Pro Inkjet 6978. I have had two of the 6978 printers. As before, I bought these because of the features. Two-sided printing and auto feed tray. All worked until the cyan did not want to print properly. The color streaked. Pretty soon, the cyan didn't print at all. I should have realized at this point that HP printers have problems. Out of warranty, so no help from HP. Foolish me, I bought another one of the same, an HP 6978. Worked great until the cyan started to streak when printing color. Tried cleaning the print heads and replacing the cyan cartridge. It still streaked when printing. Contact HP support. Multiple hours with them to only find out, the print head is probably bad. At least that is what the tech said. So, not one, but two HP 6978 printers, and the HP 6968 that all stopped printing cyan. My faith in HP products has fallen to a new low. I would not recommend the HP 6978 printer.

From Day 1 I have had issues with this printer. Print quality is horrendous, even with new cartridges. I have to constantly clean the printheads and even then it will only print in good quality for a day or so. Don't buy this model!

Great AIO that meets all my printing needs
By PeteC2
All in all a great home office/family wireless AIO for those wanting good quality while not needing high volume output. Those looking to print higher volume might want to consider the Officejet 8700 series in that case. Set up using 123.hp.com was super easy and straight-forward. I recommend considering HP's Instant Ink option as this will keep ink costs very reasonable as well as the convenience of not having to run down to the store in the middle of a print job because you are out of ink. ...
