My Review for MDR-Z7M2

I purchased the headphones a few weeks ago and it is a good product however has some drawbacks I purchased these headphones simply for the 4.4 mm Balanced output in the Sony DAP NW-ZX707 that I had purchased. 1) The Bass output is not good at the most you get a medium Bass not a heavy bass. I have tried all setting combinations but still !! 2) The ear covers are soft but hot and you sweat inside after some time. Overall, I am satisfied on average since the price tag demands a premium a premium product. I did test them against other brands before purchasing and it was the best of the lot but with the above limitations.

Under-rated: Comfort and SOUND!

I'm a musician, a teacher, and a longtime fan of SONY products. I have SONY in every direction I look, from televisions, cassette players, CD players, and HEADPHONES. I have a worn-out pair of MDR V600s, a very nice pair of WH-1000XM3s, and I recently got the MDR-Z7M2s. I needed a very high quality, high resolution headphone for for music production in my studio, including for composing and ultimately for mixing. I did a lot of research, and there are a bunch of good cans you can choose from. I tried the very highly rated Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pros and the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pros....and well, I returned both for pretty much the same reasons. Both models were sonically boring, and required a ton of power to get going. And both were much too heavy for my use. I read a review of comparable products and saw the SONY MDR-Z7M2s mentioned briefly. But the reviews I found were un-flattering. I took a chance. I've had such great luck and success with SONY products over the years. I couldn't afford their flagship MDR-Z1Rs, but the MDR-Z7M2s compared favorably. I ordered a pair, and there's been no looking back. ONCE AGAIN, I have gone with SONY for being innovative in research and design, and for making very high quality products that will last. I love the sound of the MDR-Z7M2s. I won't manufacture a bunch of irrelevant and unsubstantiated fluff about "soundstage" and whether this-or-that is crisp or muddy. When I put my SONYs on they sound rich, punchy, crisp, accurate, fun...and they FEEL GREAT. They are comfortable, they are not heavy, I can wear them for hours. The exude build quality, both when you hold them in your hands and when you put them on. They are efficient, and I can drive them easily with my audio-interface in my studio. As an aside, they sound GREAT with my phone, but their primary job is in my studio. I did pick up a portable balanced DAC Headphone Amplifier to use with my phone and the combination of the SONYs and the DAC is incredible. Again, SONY has made me a very satisfied and loyal customer. Don't believe the hype about other cans, and the fact that some reviews have ignored the SONY MDR Z7M2s. The SONY is a very good product, design and sound. Once again, SONY is the premiere in sound quality, build to last, professional products.

Everything that I expected!

A perfect match for Sony's NW-ZX507 Walkman - great sound and they are big but really fit good and don't seam heavy at all. Quality is excellent and they are very well built and should last or years.

Sound Perfection

My oh My! The Sony MDR-Z7M2 are so good at reproducing all the sound. I was so satisfied when i put them on and realized how comfortable they are. The over the ear design covers my ears so that my ears are inside the hole of the earpads. The seal is great. I used them with an outboard dac and amplifier connected to my IPAD. Listening to fast moving fusion jazz. The headphone is able to keep the electronic and wind instruments easily recognizable in the mixes. These cans have me boppin! Great presentation by Sony also. I am now listening to the Beatles.John Lennon's voice is true. The guitars are sparkling. Hand claps can be heard in a natural tone. The drums are in the back of the room but the symbols and high hats are showing full decay. All in all I can say I can and will be listening to a lot of music with the Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones.

Big hi-fi sound

outstanding, detailed, clean headphones. The sound is immersive and wide with clear imaging, probably the best closed back headphone I have. I have had these for over a month and like them very much. My setup is an Asus laptop using Schiit Modius dac with Magnius amplifier stack. Plus I'm using a balanced four pin output and the sound couldn't be better.

Fantastic, Huge sound, Great Comfort

I've had these headphones about a month now and they are fantastic. Bought them as a side grade to my HD660s and they've really held their own. Large soundstage with a large presentation that makes you feel like you're in a large room with speakers or having on orchestra right in front of you. Bass is just right for me, not too much and not too little, well detailed and blends into low mids well without overwhelming or drowning out anything else, hearing double bass being plucked is just phenomenal, very natural and lush. Vocals are slightly recessed but that could just be me coming from the 660s. Listening to classical music strings can be a bit harsh at higher volumes but it's certainly nothing that stands out and really shouldn't be an issue. Separation and imaging are great and as I said before, a very large sound, you'll know what I mean when you listen to them. Highly recommend you run these with the 4.4bal cable, I'm driving them from the Fiio Q5s and Tidal HIFI from my laptop USB or phone LDAC. I use them as my portable headphones due to them being closed back, they isolate well enough that if you're walking down the street you won't hear footsteps or someone talking to you, however, wearing them on a loud bus with people talking they won't be so good. I use the Sony WH1000xm2 for that stuff. Leakage isn't too bad, listening at moderate volumes in a silent room the sound will leak to the people around you. Build quality is top notch, all metal build with leather feels really nice in your hands and the earpads and deep and large, they feel heavy in your hands but weight distribution is unreal. Even someone like me with large ears doesn't have the pads touching my ears, for reference I have both headbands on 5. They are black and metal so if you put a nick in them you'll see it. Rear connectors feel sturdy and the screw in connectors feel really nice when screwing them in, when they are on the ground or hanging on a stand they cross each other which isn't an issue but we'll see about long-term durability. Headband is plush and soft, feels really good and after a while I forget I'm wearing these, comfort is 11/10. Provided cables are top notch with very minimal microphonics and the splitter is a nice tough, big thank you to Sony for providing a 1.2m 4.4 cable and a 10ft/3m cable with 3.5mm termination and 6.35 adaptor which is a bit proprietary due to their being a skirt on it to fit the cable. Sennheiser gave me 2 10ft cables, one 6.35 and one 4.4 which is not ideal for portable players that usually have the balanced out so big thanks to Sony. Packaging is great and box is pretty cool, it's not like the Z1R box but for about twice the price you get twice the quality. I do enjoy these headphones but I'll upgrade them first to the Z1R before I upgrade the 660s. Overall, very good headphones. Thanks Sony, keep it up

The best set of cans I’ve owned thus far...

Recently purchased the MDR-Z7M2 to replace my MDR-1A, and I have to say that these headphones are leaps, and bounds better than anything else I’ve used thus far...Currently I’m running the cans with a CHORD MOJO connected to my iPhone with the ONKYO HF Player App...the impact and clarity are outstanding, the size of the drivers are ridiculously huge, when I put them on, the foam cushions basically mold to the shape of my head and seals in the “musical juices”...I’ve yet to take them on a trip, but have used them at work, at home, and in between...GREAT JOB SONY!!

A Sony Audio masterpiece

Beautiful hardware, exceptional audio quality with versatility to scale beyond with its big drivers. The Sony house sound is present and I am loving it. This is my indoor set on my nightly sessions. It works good with my Xperia 1 II but not enough room to stretch it's legs like with the NW-ZX300. The sound is just next level like the rest of the current Sony Hi Res lineup.

King of mild U shape

King of mild U shape. U want to have one of the best sound for U shap but limited budget? MDR 7Zm2 is the way to go. I prefer this over MDR Z1R since Z1R has bit harsh treble.

Beautiful sound stage and build quality

I don't pretend to know everything about audio reproduction and audiophile quality but I can close my eyes and see Frank Sinatra at the front with brass on the left and strings on the right with the balanced cable plugged into a ZX-300. I had the MDR-Z7 initial release and these are a measurable improvement.

I bought this a year ago and am so happy that I did the right choice. Alwayse getting the fantastic music, foreigner language etc.

Because your audio experience should be nothing short of exceptional, the MDR-Z7M2 Circumaural Closed-Back Headphones from Adorama are engineered to elevate your listening to unparalleled levels. With High-Resolution Audio capability, these headphones capture the essence of music at a higher fidelity than CDs, allowing you to immerse yourself in the purest form of the original studio recording, just as the artist envisioned.

Crafted for audiophiles who demand premium sound quality, the MDR-Z7M2 headphones boast advanced features such as 2.76" HD drivers and aluminum-coated Liquid Crystal Polymer diaphragms. These components work in harmony to deliver a full spectrum of sound, from the deepest bass to the highest treble, with crystal-clear vocal clarity. The larger magnet, now twice the volume of its predecessor, ensures a robust and dynamic audio response, bringing every note to life with precision and depth.

The MDR-Z7M2's sound stage is expansive, thanks to the newly developed HD driver units that mimic a natural sound field, covering a broad frequency range from 4Hz to 100kHz. This ensures that every detail of your music is preserved, from the subtlest nuance to the most powerful crescendo, maintaining the emotional impact and energy of the live performance.

Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed MDR-Z1R headphones, the MDR-Z7M2 incorporates key technologies to make high-end audio more accessible. The Fibonacci-patterned grill, a feature inherited from the MDR-Z1R, is meticulously designed to deliver ultra-high frequencies with precision, ensuring a smoother high-frequency response and minimizing sound damping.

The diaphragm's dome has been upsized and refined to produce a sound that is both brilliant in the mid-high range and clear in the mid-low range. By combining aluminum with LCP, the headphones effectively neutralize material-specific resonance, resulting in a natural and uncolored audio experience.

Connectivity is also enhanced with a 0.17" balanced connection cable and silver-coated oxygen-free copper cables included in the box. These premium cables ensure that the audio signal is transmitted with minimal loss, preserving the integrity and detail of your music.

Comfort is paramount with the MDR-Z7M2 headphones. Ergonomically designed earpads, made from soft urethane foam cushion and synthetic leather, conform to the contours of your head, providing even pressure distribution and increased air-tightness. This not only reduces sound leakage but also optimizes the sound for a powerful bass response.

The headphones' structure, featuring aluminum-alloyed hangers and sliders, combines durability with lightweight comfort, ensuring that your headphones withstand the test of time without causing fatigue during extended listening sessions.

In summary, the MDR-Z7M2 Circumaural Closed-Back Headphones are a testament to high-quality, durable, and comfortable audio equipment. They are the perfect choice for discerning listeners who seek a reliable, stylish, and immersive audio experience that captures the essence of their favorite music.
