Shortest folded monopod

Currently, there is no other monopod with tripod base on the market that is under 18” folded. Not counting selfies monopods. I have been using the next shortest thing, Varizoom Chicken Foot. It is 20” long folded. With ball head attached, it is a bit too long to carry around in the bag for action photography. Zhyun saves me 3.5”. Unfortunately, its tripod base can be fixed only in vertical position. On uneven terrain that is liability. So I combined this monopod with more versatile Varizoom tripod feet. They fit together perfectly without need for adapter. Also, instead of the usual tall and heavy ball head I use another shortest option, Novoflex leveling head. Resulting 18” combo fits nicely in the backpack, ready for instant use on any level surface. I wish this model came in carbon fiber version to save more weight.

Good, unique monopod. Misleading packaging and manual.

The pics on here show it inverted, and from playing around with it, I gather that's how it's meant to be configured. But it comes like a standard monopod (thinnest tube towards the bottom), and the drawings in the manual also show standard monopod config. Weirdly, the instructions for turning the collars apply to inverted mode. So out of the box, i.e., standard monopod mode, you need to turn in the opposite direction as pictured to loosen and extend the monopod. The manual's 2 photos of a person using it, however, do show them using it inverted. So the manual is a bit off. In standard config, it's not as robust as my Sirui "photo/video" monopod, the main issue being no real mechanism for securing the monopod to the base. It just screws on until it stops. A tightening collar or set screw would've helped. Or even a split washer. The mechanism for fixing the ball joint in upright position could also use some improvement, though I feel Sirui could improve theirs too. In inverted mode, there's still no extra mechanism for really securing the monopod to the base, but there seems to be some more surface area and friction at the joint, so it's at least more secure than in standard monopod mode. The feet are quicker to operate than on Sirui, but you don't get 2 angles/heights like on Sirui. I'll keep it for the utility of having a minimum height somewhere between desktop and most full size monopods with tripod feet. In inverted mode, it feels solid. I don't think it quite replaces a typical monopod in standard mode, but it could with a few design tweaks to better secure the connection between the monopod and the base and the ball joint. That would make it 5 stars.
