I bought this phone for two reasons. To use it as a monitor for my A7R4 and it results that the a7R4 is not supported by this phone and the second reason was to shoot 4k120 video but as soon as you start recording you get the overheating warning and maybe 30 secs later you need to turn it off or close the camera app.

I preordered the Xperia 1 IV through the Sony website because I was looking for a smartphone that was not made in China, and I noticed on some eBay listings the box said "Made in Thailand." I ordered a black one for me and a purple one for my sister. It took a while to be delivered due to shipping issues, but I am really glad that I did not cancel my order because this is hands down the best smartphone that I have ever had. I actually had some issues with my carrier because it would not work on the Sprint cellular network, and surprisingly T-Mobile (Sprint's owner) did not offer me to switch it to one of their plans. I wanted to switch to a different carrier anyway so it worked out for me, and it works great on Verizon and AT&T (I tried them both). My last phone was the Samsung Galaxy S20, which was a great phone, but it had a curved screen so I could not put a tempered glass screen protector on it. Also it did not have a headphone jack, which drove me crazy because I prefer using wired earbuds over wireless earbuds. The Xperia 1 IV has a flat screen and a headphone jack on the top of the phone, so I can charge the phone and still use my wired earbuds. Speaking of charging, it does not come with a charger: if you want the official Sony charger, you have to pay $50 for it. Which I did, and I wouldn't even have a problem with that if it was not made in China, but unfortunately the charger is made in China. The SIM card tray can hold two SIM cards, one on each side, or one SIM card and one microSD card. I had a 512 GB microSD card, but when I noticed in the description that it could take a 1 TB card, I ordered a PNY 1 TB microSD card and it works great. The phone comes with high refresh rate (120 Hz) turned off, which keeps the display at 60 Hz and saves battery life, but it has such a vastly larger battery than the S20 that even with it on, the battery lasts me more than a full day. I really like the 120 Hz option because movement on the display is much smoother than 60 Hz. I read a review from a media company that reviews smartphones that said that the fingerprint sensor was buggy. But the fingerprint reader works really well for me and even my sister, who has had trouble with fingerprint sensors in the past. The fingerprint sensor is on the side button, which is fine but I have found that it would be better to have it in the screen like Samsung does. The reason is when I have it mounted on the phone holder on my car's dashboard, it is harder to unlock the phone from the side. Also if you just want to wake the screen, you have to use a different finger to press the button if you do not want to unlock the screen. When I ordered this, I was afraid that the display might seem too skinny, but maybe since my S20 had a curved display it actually does not seem any skinnier. I have not watched many movies on it, but when I have they look really good. Since the display is extra long, you can have up to seven rows of apps per page on the home screen (not including the unchanging bottom row): you just have to set the apps to be the smallest size. It is a little annoying to have to pull down twice in order to change the brightness of the screen, because I only had to pull down once on my old S20. I am not a professional photographer, but the pictures that I have taken with this phone look great. Most of my gripes about this phone are actually with some of the preinstalled Google apps. I was not expecting Sony to outsource most of their main apps to Google, and from what I recall it did not come with a notes app preinstalled. The Google apps are fine for the most part, but there are some things that Samsung apps do better: the Google Files app does not have an option to play downloaded videos as audio only, like the Samsung Files app does. But I downloaded VLC from the Google Play store, which has that feature so I just use that instead. It took me a while to find a notes app that is just as good as Samsung Notes, but Offline Notepad from the Google Play store is what I use and it has all of the features that I want in a notes app for free. I prefer the Samsung keyboard over the preinstalled Google Gboard, but I installed Microsoft's SwiftKey and it works well enough. Unfortunately neither keyboard has the ever-present clipboard button like the Samsung keyboard: whenever I select a password field on a website, the entire navigation bar on SwiftKey disappears. Usually I can just long press to paste, but I have to make sure that the password is the last thing that I copy to the clipboard. Unlike Samsung Gallery, the preinstalled Google Photos app does not have an option to view all images on the phone in chronological order: downloaded images and photos from other devices are separated into different albums, making them more difficult for me to find. However, if you use the preinstalled Google Files app and select "Images," it will show all images (photos and downloaded) in chronological order. Overall this is still the best smartphone that I've ever used, it has all of the features that I want on a phone, and it is not made in China so I highly recommend it.

Love the phone, but the time frame to buy the protection plan was ridiculously short. I can still technically return the phone yet I can't buy the protection plan now. Makes no sense.

I'm not a Sony fanboy by any means or reason, but I am a bit of a techy and I have enjoyed the Xperia line for as long as I can remember. I was a big fan of the small form factor phones at some point, but Sony discontinued them and I thought that was a big let down. Anyway, the new 21:9 form factor made it easy for me to transition from the mini size because the width of the new Xperia's made it easy to hold them. Fast forward to 2022, I am in awe of the new X1 IV because of the camera system. This product came just in time when I gifted my Sony alpha camera to my niece and I was left with nothing... until now. I'm not saying that this will replace the dslr. I just like the convenience of a high spec camera on a phone for my immediate needs.

This phone is absolutely fantastic and feels bleeding edge in terms of it's tech. Feels great in the hand with the square sides. Absolutely love this phone so far, despite the high price.

What makes the Xperia 1 IV so fast
Three key features contribute to the breathtaking speed of the Xperia 1 IV camera - a 120fps read-out sensor, up to 60fps AF/AE calculations, and AI subject detection.
120fps read-out sensor on all lenses
All the image sensors on the Xperia 1 IV boast an incredible read-out speed of up 120 frames per second, so you get the same fast performance with every lens.
Up to 60fps continuous AF/AE calculations on all lenses
The Xperia 1 IV continuously calculates autofocus and exposure up to 60 times per second. And with new algorithms for AF precision and performance, you'll get clear, in-focus shots of even fast-moving scenes on all lenses.
Always focused, just hold the camera towards the subject
Sony Al algorithms automatically detect the subject as the user intended. Combined with Sony's unique AF tracking and focus accuracy, the subject is always in focus. The main (24mm) sensor also includes an array of 247 phase-detect focus points, covering nearly 70% of the frame, for incredibly fast, precise focus.
