i had high hopes for this camera but was gravely disappointed when i opened the box. Basically the guts of the nex vg30 in a fisher price style plastic body. needless to say it was returned.

Get this you might not ever find a perfect video camera. If you did then tell me, But when you get this thing to hit it's sweet spot it's on. Free Tips: Buy the body only. The power zoom lens is a waste. If your rich buy canon glass. I use a Tamron 24-70 to shot my weddings and commercials. More Free Tips: stay off the H gain. Too noisy. It's bad in low light. You been warned. That's why god created lights. It gets heavy, then use a tripod. Last Tip: You get that DSLR look without having to look crazy with all that DSLR added gear. DSLR guy knows what I'm talking about. You can rock the zoom rocker, you got XLR inputs, shot 5.5 hrs on one SD, add pro glass, and don't for get to light. Final Tip: It's super fun to shoot with but it's not perfect. You want perfect spend another 10k, or rent the red.

Pros: I am using this camera for wedding video. It is a very good camera so far. Used only in two wedding. Cons: To use the zoom, I have to use two buttons (one at the finger and the other along the lens). I am little disappointed not to be able to use my Sony remote controlled Tripod that I used with my previous Sony HD Camcorder. There is also no connector in this camera that I can use the remote control device. There is a hand-held Remote Commander that comes with this camera, which does not give me zooming effect if I am holding behind the camera. I will appreciate if any one knows about this solution. The additional eye-piece makes it unnecessarily bulky.

Need shallow DOF but want a real video camera? This is about the best there is right now. This camera can serve as an ENG/event- type camera, a shallow DOF beauty camera and a still camera. If you are thinking about using a DSLR for video I'd say take a hard look at the NEX EA50U. It solves most of the problems associated with using DSLRs for video. It has proper XLR inputs with audio meters. Auto and manual focus with red/yellow peaking. A shoulder mount form factor so you don't need to spend a lot on a rig. It does 24P,30P,60P and 60i. If you need super low light, you can attach all kinds of lenses for special situations. The kit lens actually does fairly well, offering decent low light, decent 10X power zoom and fairly wide at the start. The (near)lossless zoom allows you 2X zoom using primes! I use it for weddings, commercials, and many other jobs. It's a great camera. The only improvements I can mention are it would be nice to have built-in ND and the FS100 sensor. But Sony refuses to put ND until you get to the FS700 price range. Honestly the lack thereof hasn't been a problem for me yet. And the low light is close to the FS100, just not quite as good. One more thing worth noting is that clients will think it costs 3 times as much as it does. Since the price has dropped even more, it's an easy choice now. Get one! I hope it does well because we need more cameras like this.

At last a shoulder mount. Wonderful viewfinder arrangement and bright as well. But, here are a few shortcomings: Low light not to good; not enough weight on shoulder weight of camcorder so lens area becomes heavy; slightly soft image.

I bought this camera to shoot Weddings. It does a fantastic job. The dual mic imputs work great. It also works very well in low light.

I had intended on purchasing a DSLR for interviews to achieve shallow DOF that my 1/3" three-chip cannot achieve. I was considering the Lumix GH3 but by the time I added lens, XLR inputs, and some type of tripod support I was not that far from the EA50. So I purchased the EA50 and added the Sony E-mount 1.8 50mm lens. It looks great as an interview camera. The supplied servo zoom lens is slow at 3.5 to 6.5, but is fine outdoors (I also added a Genus variable ND filter). The servo zoom is pretty useless as it jumps at the start and end. A smooth zoom with start/stop cannot be achieved. Even at high gain/iso this camera captures very usable video. For the price I am quite pleased.

Great video camera
By Captain V.
I bought this camera to shoot Weddings. It does a fantastic job. The dual mic imputs work great. It also works very well in low light.
The Sony NEX-EA50UH Professional Camcorder is designed for cinematic event videographer. The camera comes with an 18-200mm servo zoom lens, the first E-mount lens with servo zoom. NEX-EA50 features a new Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor and delivers Full HD 1080p at 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames per second.
The popularity of HDSLRs among videographers can be credited to their filmic video quality, thanks to their large image sensors and the prospect of professional grade HD video and still photographs, all within one camera body. The NEX-EA50UH was designed with this in mind and it improves on the concept by combining an APS-C sensor, E-mount lenses and DSLR quality still photographs with a camcorder form factor, servo zoom lenses, time code and professional audio recording capabilities. It also has some truly groundbreaking features that videographers could only dream about before now.
