BEWARE BAD PRODUCT

This is an awful product with bad software behind it. I purchased one of these to store my photography files and had it configured in RAID1. After 3 years of usage, one of the drives failed which is inevitable for all hard drives so I sent it in for RMA. Western Digital sent back a replacement drive an when I completed the rebuild process using their software at the recommendation of the CS agent, all my files were gone. Fortunately I had the foresight to backup my files to another drive before using this product. When I lost all my data, I reached out to Western Digital for support and their agents offered some data recovery software suggestions. They mentioned emailing me with some suggestions but never followed through. It's clear WD CS is outsourced and very poor. Your better off looking for an alternative solution.

Don't waste your money!

Do not buy this. The first one simply died the second time I used it. I got a replacement and all went well for about a year of occasional use. I have 12T of photos, mirrored, on the two drives. I suddenly got a message that the drive failed to mount, meaning there was no longer a way for the drive to connect with the computer. After exploring solutions, there were 2? reformat the drive or spend approximately $9K on data recovery. Why did I think that if one drive went bad I was safely backed up on the other? I have learned the hard way that because every single thing is made so crappy these days I need to store files on hard drives and use the cloud for backup. This is not my first WD external drive to fail. The other was brand new and cost me a week of work. (For complicated reasons, I could only save to one drive.). Just save your money for something else.

Works as Advertised

It seems to be working just fine. It took me awhile to figure out how to turn on the File History setting in Windows 11. Once I got through the MS stuff, the system recognized the G drive and is backing up my files. I was a little surprised as the low fan noise, which means the home office will get warmer during the summer months. I guess that is the trade off for the 2 drives and the 8 TB of space. It is probably overkill for my work. But as I get deeper into creating videos, I wanted something that would hold all the large files.

Super Unreliable G-Raid 2

I used G-Raid with Thunderbolt in the past with a Raid 1 setting. Regardless of having two healthy hard drives, I could not access any data due to the failure of the enclosure. WD replaced the G-Raid with the G-Raid 2 but the process took two months. Used the new drives for two months and they fail again. The accompanying G-Raid Configurator software is also not reliable. Oftentimes, it fails to identify the attached G-Raid drives and I have to actively trigger some actions on the drives to wake the Configurator. Also, the embedded functions "Check for Configurator Update" and "Check for Firmware Update" never work. I could not even confirm whether the firmware of my drives are the latest. Not recommended.

DO NOT Trust Western Digital

Don't attempt to buy the product directly from WD website. It's buggy and no one will answer your phone call. Once you fill everything and waste an hour of your life, they cancel the transaction with no explanation. Then they attempt to push you onto automated responses. They lost thousands of dollars in sales and I purchased a competitors product after receiving automated confirmation emails of the sale, only to find out their system canceled it and I missed crucial deadlines. The website is a joke, and their hard drives suck balls.

Reliable Drive to Back Up My Files

I had an emergency situation where a large drive failed. I had to back-up my main drive, about 27TB in a quick way with a reliable drive. The G-RAID 2, 40TB did the job. I expect this drive to work well as my back-up drive for a very long time. It worked seamlessly and perfectly to back-up my 650,000 photos. Very reliable! ??????????

As Expected

So far so good! I have been cataloging and archiving music digitally since 2003. I have relied on G-Technology since 2011 (the Hitachi years). I have had no failures so far and I'm hoping for the same quality with the recent purchase of the 40TB G-Raid (SanDisk Western Digital). The transfer of files to the new drive was smooth but time consuming. With 30 days of usage so far I have experienced no issues. The drive actually seems to be quieter. My only concern is the inability to register the product on the site. I was informed it wasn't necessary.

Beware of failure

This drive was great for 6 months, but today completely failed. SanDisk support thinks the entire enclosure went bad. Thankfully they're sending me a new unit, but all of my data is lost since it was in Raid 0 configuration. If you purchase this, just learn from my mistake, lose some space and configure to Raid 1 before you use. It's just frustrating that a fairly new, expensive, "quality" drive is failing after 6 months. I've been using G-Technology for over 10 years and have never once had an issue until the first drive I purchase from them after being acquired by SanDisk. Coincidence...?

36 TB GRAID 2 failure

This 36tb GRAID 2 crashed the first night out of the box! One drive failed - I spent 5 days retrieving 17000 photos back into Lightroom.

Data backup?

I bought a G-RAID drive, and I'm still struggling with an effective backup solution since WD do not offer free-of-charge or recommended (with a fee) solution for users.

Very nice but noisy for sure

It works fine and it is easy to set-up. But, it is louder than I expected for sure. It is loud and it is always making some sound even if it is not actively in use.

Died After 3rd Anniversary

My G-Raid died after the 3rd Anniversary and Western Digital wouldn't honor the Warranty since it was a few months after the Warranty Period. My Hard Drives still work, but the Unit Itself died. How is this possible?

G Raid 2 working great with Windows 10

Formatting for PC (Windows 10) not easy to figure out, but once you find the tutorial on Sandisk's website the setup doesn't take long. Included raid software is simple. Transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3 are very fast. Build quality and ease of use with drive swapping is very good. Worth the price. One star deducted for difficulty finding info on formatting for Windows. The driver software is easy to find at least?. I wasn't aware before purchase that setting it up for Mac/Pc (exfat) was frowned upon, which was a bit disappointing, but makes sense. Last gripe - the power supply is terribly ugly and archaic. It could have been included with an external drive from 15 years ago - power cable > brick with device power cable. The enclosure is certainly inspired by Apple products. Power supply design team should take notes.

Well made if it worked

The RAID arrived in the box that stated that it was pre-configured for Mac. When attached, the Mac will not see the drive, the Drive Manager will not see the discs and the G-RAID software does not see the controller. Attaching it to a Windows PC yields the same results. If there is something that I did not do correctly, it was not outlined in any instructions (which were minimal) and I am still having no luck getting anything to which I attach it to recognize or detect it.

Good Quality but Noisy and Difficult to Set up

The unit looks great, but as others have said it is definitely noisy. Also, it's made to be used with a mac. You can use it with a windows machine but there are a bunch of extra steps in order to do that, and the instructions on how to do it are confusing and not clear at all. It's a pretty frustrating setup process.

Very good for a spinning drive RAID system.

I've used these G-RAIDs for years and think they are great. Granted, SSD RAIDs are probably faster, but this will do just fine for many workflows, including 4K video editing.

LOVED it! Then the enclosure stopped powering up.

How do you extract data if you have a dual drive RAID 0, 1 Etc.. and the enclosure fails?

Big, Fast and Versatile

By RockyTrekker

It's fast enough with the USB C gbs ports on my Windows PCs but it is extremely fast on the thunderbolt ports on my M1 Mac. I love that both the Mac and Windows can use it, and it makes sharing data between the two operating systems pleasant and easy.
