Review Summary

Really enjoy using this camera. It makes a great high-performance travel camera due to the small lens sizes. Only issue is low-light capability, but this can be somewhat mitigated by the IS for stationary subjects.

Hard to summarize what I love about this little gem of a camera, but suffice to say it is one of the best values I've ever found in a camera. The feature list on this camera would take pages to write about. Yes, it is M43 so is not the best for low-light shooting without supplemental lighting. If you can live with that, this thing rocks. In most situations, I reach for this instead of my Canon 70D or RP. Equally stellar when it comes to video.

This is my first entry into the m43 realm. My last camera is an old, old, old Olympus. I was a little intimidated by the owners manual at first. I set it for the basic "just push a button and take a picture" mode. Super easy, great pictures. Now I'm moving on, setting by setting. What a great camera! Excellent pictures, great 4k video, just amazing! I'll never outgrow this one!

Brought this camera to get started with wildlife photography" and paired it with a Panasonic Leica 100-400mm lens. I have been learning all its features for this hobby and have had good results. Taking wildlife stills is very easy with the mechanical and electronic shutter speeds. The AFC for birds in motion takes allot of practice to master. The easiest way to get that keeper picture is using 6K photo which pre-records up to 80 in total frames before and after you fully depress the shutter button. To get the prerecording started you have to half press and the green dot appears on screen, fully press the shutter button for it to capture all of the images when the bird takes flight. I gave the camera four stars because with 6k photo you can only jpeg files.

I'm a long-time Canon shooter (for still images) but stepped out and got a Panasonic GX85 a few years ago for occasional video work. I was more than impressed. As my needs have grown on the video side, I had my eye on the G9. It was Panasonic's attempt to make a camera for still shooters, but it had a number of fantastic video features. Firmware upgrades continued to add value, so I finally decided to go for it. I've not been disappointed. For anyone doing occasional professional video work, this is a capable camera, but I'm now using it more & more for stills, too, in place of my Canon 70D. The ergonomics are fantastic, the menu system is intuitive, the customization options are extensive. With recent firmware upgrades, I've found autofocus to be excellent, and it is fast in burst mode! Slots for two SD cards is a huge plus. From a usability perspective, I honestly don't think you can beat the G9 on value. Panasonic got a LOT right on this camera! Of course, at the end of the day, you're after good image and/or video quality, and this is where the G9 may lose some folks. You can't change the fact that it is a M43 sensor, which means pushing the ISO for better low light performance just doesn't work, and you're not going to have the same bokeh that you might get on a full-frame sensor. If you can get over those hang-ups (which are way too easy to have) - a few have them for good reason, but for most, it is not an issue - you'll be blown away at what this camera can do. The sensor aside, you're getting a $2k camera for $1k. If you're a hybrid shooter, I don't know that you can find anything close to this in terms of overall value.

I have owned many Panasonic cameras starting with the GH2. I was using a GX85 which was a very nice small camera. Somehow, I heard about the G9. I noticed it was on sale, so I started doing a lot of research online. Every review was favorable, especially with the firmware updates allowing awesome video. I bought the G9 and sold the GX85. I LOVE the G9. It is an amazing camera. Adorama shipped very quickly. This camera takes great photos and video plus mic and headphone inputs, dual card slots, and more. You can't go wrong at this price.

Love how light this camera is. On the boat, it got lightly splashed a few times and the sealed housing cleaned off nicely. Highly recommend!

Other than the backorder delay of a few months (not the fault of Adorama,) I love the camera as well as the bundle they created. I wish they offered support on how to use it as it is packed with features that I will have to figure out on my own.

I have a GX8 and was on the fence whether to get this camera or not, but I'm glad I did because the G9 is so much more powerful than the GX8. The speed at which it can take photos is amazing. The package that Adorama offers with the camera is really very nice and worth the extra money paid. I've used the microphone, SD cards and extra batteries and have been satisfied with the performance.

The Lumix G9 is, along with its excellent associated lenses as good a micro 4/3 system as you could want, particularly so for those who do not want the bulk and weight of other excellent brands like Sony and Canon (which I own for professional purposes). It has too many menus, like all modern cameras. You just have to accept that as the ever present complication of current life on this planet.

I upgraded from the Lumix G95 to the G9. The G9 has a finer grid of autofocus points, better human/animal autofocus, and 6K video. It also has 2 card slots instead of one, and a bigger battery. The size/weight difference isn?t significant between the two bodies. Features of the G95 that I like better are the on-camera pop-up flash, in-camera panorama processing, and the layout of the dials and switches on the top of the body, especially the on/off switch. For me, the improved autofocus for wildlife shots was the main reason for upgrading, and I think the change will be worth it.

I?m a Nikon & Sony user for still and Panasonic G85 user for movie. Upgraded to a better EVF, control, IBIS and picture quality G9 is a logical move. Compare with G85 and G9, the picture quality is easy to tell in all aspects, you name it. Especially you are using 10bit 4.2.2. For the control dials. An extra dial next to the LCD is a great plus. I would call it Canon style! However, the front dial is moved from the back of the shutter is a nightmare to me! If you are canon user, you will enjoy it very much?. Panasonic is pretty new in DSLR or Mirrorless segment. The root is not deep enough to keep the ?characters? of the product lines. This is no good or bad. It is just a matter of your personal preferences. AF is okay for me in real live usage, so far. It is not as bad as the main stream YouTubers' comments. I use a lot of EVF during filming for an accurate framing. This big EVF is a monster! The IBIS is not as good as expected but it might take a little longer to confirm it.

An amazing kit! Don't buy the camera body alone - for the same price, you can get the camera body, a REALLY great tripod, a nice SD card, and some lens cleaning accessories. Beware, however, that the screen protector does not fit! Adorama, include a different screen protector with this kit. Check out my review for the tripod if you're interested; it's great.

I am an amateur photographer who is still learning so keep that in mind. I have been using a LUMIX g85 and decided to move up to the g9 since it is a camera that I will use during my retirement (I have been retired for 6 years and decided to spend the money - you only live once!). The g9 has a die cast magnesium alloy frame like the gh5 and is splash and dust proof when used with a LUMIX lens with the same feature. The 5-axis stabilization is excellent like other g series LUMIX cameras. I could list the features but it is better to read the literature. I decided to move up to a professional level camera, specifically the g9, after reading reviews by the pros. The best description was "the g9 is to still photography as the gh5 is to video". That was a deciding factor that helped me make my decision. I do not plan to even try to become a professional, but an advanced amateur would be great. You pros out there would be wise to consider this camera. Buy it!

The LUMIX G9 is an excellent video and stills camera. I bought it for the 4K/60fps 8bit quality and thus far have not been disappointed. The starter lens is basic and not flashy, but gets the job done for a beginner filmmaker like myself. Overall I?m very satisfied with the quality of the camera and the price point.

Outstanding Camera
By MIKE M.
I originally bought a GX85 to do video (only). That worked out just fine. But when I tested out the GX85 for stills, I was really impressed by the results. Hence, I chose to upgrade to the G85. THAT rig was better than the GX85. After a 3-4 weeks of use, I made the decision to purchase the G9. When I started testing that one out, THAT is when I was just beside myself with how good it was - stills and video. Skip ahead. I traded my G85 for a second G9. Also purchased 4 more new micro 4/3 lense...

G9 is a fantastic stills and video camera
By Kyle M.
The viewfinder: When I first looked through, it looked nice but it didn't wow me. I think my contact lens was a bit foggy and I had trouble getting the diopter adjusted just right. After some fiddling I got it looking good. Used the camera some and picked up my Oly EM5 II. The Oly looked tiny and cramped and the refresh rate is glacially slow. Just the other day I was thinking how nice the Oly viewfinder is. But oh no. G9 has a fantastic viewfinder. Camera responsiveness & autofocus: Lightni...

A High-Resolution special mode yields 80-megapixels in RAW recording by shooting the 20.3-megapixel sensor 8 times to create a single image.
• Full resolution 20.3-megapixel sensor, plus 80 megapixels high-resolution JPEG /RAW in-camera image.
• Fast 0.04 sec. (approx.) lock focus result from a new LUMIX ultra high-speed AF technology. 60 fps [AFS] electronic shutter or 20 fps [AFC] high-speed burst via mechanical shutter in full-res.
• Massive 3,680K-dot OLED Live View Finder [LVF] with 120 fps refresh rate, 0.83X magnification, and blackout free 100% field of view.
• Dual I.S. 5-Axis 2.0 combines data from a gyro, temp., & image sensors for stabilization performance of 6.5 stops lower shutter speeds *2 *3, when combined with LUMIX O.I.S. lenses with 2-Axis I.S.
• Dual UHS-II SD Card slots for in-camera backup, relay, or format allocation recording.
• 4K 30p/60p 4:2:2 10bit video recording, Variable Frame Rate, Hybrid Log Gamma
A Joystick Controller on the back can be used to smoothly and intuitively select focus blocks inside the focusing area grid overlay. A new 225-Area AF focus detection area massively increased from 49 (conventional LUMIX G cameras) to 225 points. The Custom Multi AF mode enables free selection of blocks inside the 225 focusing area.
A massive super high-resolution 3,680k-dot OLED Live View Finder (LVF) improves visibility and makes for perfect framing even under direct sunlight. With Panasonic’s highest-level 0.83x magnification to date and a long 21mm eye point distance, its excellent for people who wear glasses.
The viewfinder coverage can be switched to 0.7x, 0.77X, or 0.83x depending on the scene (35mm camera equivalent). Switching is done with the V.MODE button
When shooting dark scenes like starry skies, this mode suppresses the stimulation of the eyes that are accustomed to the dark. The Live Viewfinder (LVF) and rear monitor can be set separately.
5-Axis Dual I.S. 2.0 (Image Stabilizer)* intelligent compensation yields the equivalent of 6.5-stops in slower shutter speed***. Shake is nearly eliminated in both body and lens even at during telephoto shooting**. It also works in both photo and video recording, including 4K video. Even lenses not equipped with Optical Image Stabilizers (O.I.S.) can benefit from the LUMIX G9’s in-body image stabilization.
* 5-axis Dual I.S. 2 works when attaching the lens that are compatible with it. Firmware update of the lens is also required.
** Based on the CIPA standard [Yaw/Pitch direction: focusing distance f=140mm (35mm film camera equivalent f=280mm), when H-FS14140 is used.]
*** Based on the CIPA standard [Yaw/Pitch direction: focusing distance f=60mm (35mm film camera equivalent f=120mm), when H-ES12060 is used.]
A new status LCD instantly confirms the camera's settings. Convenient for shooting with frequent settings adjustments, and for simply framing with the viewfinder and rear monitor.
