Purchased this camera as an upgrade to older Panasonic. This is a very portable camera that is well built and produces great images. I have used it for day and nighttime sporting events and have been very pleased with the overall quality. The only downside for sporting events is that the built in mic is very omni-directional and picks up too much noise from the stands but I just purchased an external mic with a tighter field which should solve the problem. Overall this is a great camera

Great camera! We use it our church live streams and it works great. Great for our team of amateurs to produce high quality 4k video. If it was more advanced i'd love more buttons on the camera itself for ease in manual mode. Not excellent in low lighting and doesn't have a adjustment for focus that works easily. Love the camera!

The camera seems great. The bag that came with it is a touch too small and distorts the eyepiece.

I love this product. It does a fantastic job of handling difficult lighting situations. The video is crisp. The autofocus can be a little slow at times, but overall it works very well. No complaints here!

Great budget prosumer camera. I wish it had a bigger sensor for better lowlight performance and bokeh. Otherwise its packed with features you can't get for the same price elsewhere.

Took a little work, and a nice long wait, but the camera is installed, connected to a DeckLink 4k from Blackmagic. Live the picture quality even with less than ideal lighting.

I'm loving this camcorder. As an actor (especially with coronavirus) we're being asked more and more to self-tape auditions. Casting directors expect audition submissions with good lighting, good sound, and good video. I love that I can plug my XLR shotgun mic which is attached to a boom stand directly into the camcorder. The XLR inputs are part of the detachable handle accessory, which also has a convenient start-stop record button right on top of the camera. I run the HDMI output from the camera into an external field monitor which is also super convenient, and I can easily pop out the SD card to transfer the video to my laptop for processing. With a separately purchased video grabber, I can also convert the HDMI to USB 3.0 and Livestream the video in applications like Zoom. This is my primary application, but this camcorder does much more that I look forward to exploring.

Great little camera. Professional quality video & audio (especially with external condenser mic), but very intuitive and easy to use for someone who's not a professional videographer.

Great accessory package so far...some of the components (the lights, charger plates, tripod) are on back-order so I haven't gotten to use those yet.

This camcorder is great for amateurs and professionals, it's basically a blend between the two so its easy for beginners but has lots of professional features as well. Pros: 1. It has decent zoom range. I was not expecting the zoom to fit my needs since I had previously been using a camcorder with 57x zoom range, but surprisingly it did. 2. It has great video quality, which is one of the reasons I got it. 3. The handle on the top of the camera is great for panning and shots that are low to the ground. 4. The infrared(IR is amazing, I had a small infrared camera before but the infrared was very dim and basically worthless. This camcorders IR how ever works very well and reaches to about 60ft(18.3m) but it gets very dim at that point, although it works very well to about 20ft(6m). If needed you can get an external IR light to extend farther. 5. The camera doesn't turn on when you open the screen which is great when trying to remove the SD card. The camera I had previous to this would turn on when I opened the screen, so I would try to open the screen a little bit and pull the SD card out, which was a real pain, but with this camera its easy. 6. It has a reasonably good dynamic range. Cons: 1. The time code does not time the current video but all the videos that have ever been taken on that SD card. It can be reset to 0 in the menu though if need be. This may not bother other people but it does bother me a bit. Although with so many other features that goes into the back of my brain, unless I'm trying to time something. 2. It is a bit heavy so holding it for a while gets painful, but it's not very bad. 3. Some times it doesn't focus right or takes some time to focus, which isn't great when shooting wildlife that moves rapidly, but it isn't to bad. Overall very happy with this camera, it's fairly small and portable. It has great lens flares(I know that sounds strange but lens flares can look really bad, with this camera they don't look very bad). It also has very good image stabilization.

A lot of bang for the buck. After only having it a short time I'm impressed. The videos are perfect. Works well in low light and has features I did not expect. The battery that comes with it last a good while. I haven't bought a camcorder in a long time so pardon me if I smile too much. Shoots in 4K, which is nice. The learning curve isn't too bad. If you deal with a still camera this should be a breeze. I'm no typists so I'll cut my review short and leave you with, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I've had the XA20 and the XA30. Bought this for the 4k. Same form factor as the other XA cameras. Very portable and easy to use. Good picture. A great B-camera or for when you need something light and discrete. However, I was surprised (shocked) that it doesn't have a wireless remote controller option - really? I suppose that saved Canon about $2 per unit. And the buttons are mushy and deeply recessed which makes it hard for me to operate with my fat fingers. But overall another good XA camera.

Canon offers journalists and broadcasters a new line of professional camcorders with the new XA40 Camcorder. The new XA40 features a 1/2.3" CMOS sensor, two XLR audio inputs, and one mini-HDMI output that makes it suitable for producing documentaries and journalism-style productions on the go. The Canon XA40 weighs about three pounds and comes with a built-in microphone and headphone jack, making it perfect for mobile production and eliminating the need to carry around additional bulky equipment. It also has up to four channels of manual and automatic levels of LPCM audio for added flexibility. The XA40 features a 20x HD optical zoom and supports 4k UHD recording for crisp and detailed footage even when zooming in on subjects that are far away. Get quality footage on the go without the bulk with the Canon XA40.
For fast performance in both capture and transmission, excellent for the dynamic world of Electronic News Gathering (ENG) as well as journalistic, documentary, corporate and higher education video production, look no further than the XA40 Professional Camcorder.
Before NAB 2019 kicks off in Las Vegas, Canon is announcing four exciting new camcorders to their existing professional lineup. The Canon XA40 and XA45 are new offerings for journalists and broadcasters, while the XA50 and XA55 have creative video production capabilities...READ MORE
Featuring an advanced 4K UHD CMOS Pro Image Sensor, a powerful DIG!C DV 6 Image Processor and a phenomenal 20x High Definition optical zoom lens, the XA40 camcorder captures expansive, high-quality 4K UHD video. Dual SD card slots that are compatible with universal SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards provide super-high capacity and ultra-fast data transfer.
Featuring a low-luminance noise rating of +3 dB, the XA40 Professional Camcorder is able to capture clear, sharp images with incredible detail even in low light.
Slow and Fast Motion Modes allow the XA40 Professional Camcorder to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate for a fast or slow motion effect during playback. Since the camera is recording real frames and modifying the playback rate, there is virtually no quality loss and maximum image quality is maintained. Additionally, interval recording allows the user to record frames at specified intervals, providing time-lapse recording of up to 1200x and slow motion down to 0.4x of the original speed.
The XA40 Professional Camcorder represents Canon's 4K UHD System, delivering truly excellent image quality and reproduction for most any news-gathering application. With its 20x Optical Zoom Video lens, its 4K UHD CMOS Pro Image Sensor and the powerful DiG!C DV 6 Image Processor working together to capture and process the images at hand, the XA40 is positioned to deliver HD video that is nothing short of stunning.
The 3.0-inch 460,000 dot LCD display provides vivid colors and high contrast. A wide-view angle (over 80° at all angles) aids in composition versatility, and regular chromaticity adjustments, which are prompted by the camcorder, help ensure correct brightness and faithful color reproduction.
Weighing less than three pounds including the detachable handle, battery and lens hood – and less than two pounds without – the XA40 Professional Camcorder is ideal for high-action shoots when both speed and mobility are essential, and where keeping a low profile is an added benefit. Though small in size, this camcorder sacrifices nothing when it comes to professional functionality.
The 0.24-inch tilt-type color electronic viewfinder on the XA40 Professional Camcorder has 100% field of view, and 1.56 million dots of resolution help ensure critical focus adjustment, with peaking applied if necessary. The viewfinder can tilt up to 45° for low-angle shooting. A joystick located to the right of the viewfinder, where the thumb rests, enables control of camera settings on the viewscreen without having to use touch panel controls.
Not only does the XA40 Professional Camcorder provide the user with incredible control over the image, it also provides immense creative freedom when it comes to inputs and outputs, including:
