Excellent "prosumer" camera when you don't want/need a handle with XLR inputs. It has a LANC port for an affordable remote zoom, but also comes with a wireless remote with more functions if you desire that. Lens quality and picture quality are superb and you have a large choice of popular picture profiles already programmed in which you can over-ride with your preferences.

Nice camera for the money. As a "prosumer" it lacks a few features found on the more expensive "pro" models, but gives an excellent performance even under auto mode. Now if they would only add 4K60p.

I bought the AX 700 mainly because I wanted a 4K Camcorder which is compatible with my existing accessories for the CX900 I have since 2014. I'm fully convinced of te AX700 performance. The image stabilizer works awesome and the handling of the camcorder is easy. I like the many possibilities to make manual settings; so I'm able to control the exposure values perfectly. All in all I'm happy with this camcorder!

When the telephoto stopped working on my Sony 106E in July 2021 after 11 years heavy use, I decided to go for a higher spec Sony camcorder as a replacement and selected the FDR-AX700. Due to Covid restrictions I haven't been able to use it as much as I would have liked, but am very satisfied with the results so far. It is so simple to use and the menu system is much simpler than on many other camcorders I've seen. I look forward to experimenting with the options over the coming months. My only criticism is that the mic is very sensitive to wind noise.

Good camera- Image quality, build etc., all good The Problems: 1) If you use a Mac, there's no way to connect the camera to your computer to transfer files, you need to remove the SD card every time. I was on with Sony customer service for 30 minutes, downloading apps, waiting for the agent to do more research... 30 minutes of my life wasted and then the rep says "Yea, I knew none of this would work" Thanks. 2) No Hardware/software updates in 3 years!? Basically saying "You've just spent a bunch of money on the camera and now that we have your money, now your on your own..." 3) The Select/Control button is way too SMALL! If you don't have small, delicate fingers, you're very likely going to be mis-selecting and re-navigating multiple times before you get to your menu selection. 4) Apparently this camera is very particular about what external mics you can use. Use one that's not supported (Surprise, it's only Sony) and expect less than optimal sound.

Delighted with the camcorder - it's slightly larger and heavier than I had imagined but the picture quality (and possibilities it opens up for creativity) are just what I wanted. I do have a few negatives though: 1) For a premium prosumer camcorder, I would have expected a manual included. Personally, I find it very disappointing when the few pages of instructions included refer you to an online site for the 'e-manual'. That was a big disappointment for me. 2) The joystick is a bit too small for east navigation of menus and has a tendency to scroll too quickly for my liking, meaning you often overshoot the option you want to find. 3) The rather tatty software which you need to download from Sony to grab the video files from the CF card(s) and move across to your PC is called 'PlayMemories Home'. It works alright i.e. it is nothing special, but (am I being picky here?) the name of the software makes it sound like something you'd get with a dirt cheap camcorder for £50 from ebay! Why couldn't Sony have called it something like 'AX-700 file importer' or something that sounds a bit more grown up...? Software and manual gripes aside, it's a splendid bit of kit that I'm loving.

I purchased the FDR-AX700 in April of 2020, I already own 2 FDR-AX100s, one AX53, one AX33 and one Mirrorless A6400. I love the build of the AX700 it has become my #1 camcorder. I do multi-camera shooting and the picture quality and consistancy from one model to the next. Most of my shoots are indoors so low light is always a challenge but the AX700 tackles the job.

I've bought Sony camcorders since 2011 when I migrated to HD from DV tape. Videography is only a hobby and my annual output may only be a couple of stage shows and some family or friend's weddings, for which I don't charge, but I take pride in delivering the best quality I can. The AX700 is an excellent addition with first class picture quality, ease of use and with features only seen on much more expensive cameras of 6 or seven years ago. Shooting in 4K allows for cropping yet retaining quality in HD projects and budget film makers will benefit from shooting in S-log. Stabilisation is adequate but no match for the BOSS on the AX33 and AX53. With this camera bridging a gap between top end Prosumer/entry level Professional it suits me very well as this model retains a still picture mode that the designated professional siblings do not. I'm delighted to have indulged myself in its acquisition and look forward to giving it a serious workout when the Covid crisis recedes.

Absolutely love this Camera so far. The lens is fantastic and the super quick auto focus is an absolute dream to have when shooting a lot of action. Doesn't have as many capabilities as something more professional (although it's capabilities seem endless), but the ease of use makes up for it. Great Camera!

As the title says, I am very please with the FDR-AX700 4K HDR camera. It doesn’t take long to get up and running taking videos in 4K which look excellent on my big Sony television. The slow and quick motion is a great feature which I expect to use to add something different to my movies. The camera is compact for what it does and I find it fits in my hand beautifully and all the controls I need are easy to reach. The zoom is also a great feature. In summary, a great purchase.

The Sony ax700 produces excellent quality footage with a great zoom, its small and light, the drawbacks are with the menu controls which are very fiddly, also the slow motion I find almost useless as it don't show you what your filming like modern cameras even camera phones, it uses old software and has to process for 3 minutes where you don't know what your filming.

I am an experienced videographer and have used lots of cameras and camcorders. This is excellent for me because it allows you to use manual features easily and quickly. Auto setting is so good too. If you’ve ever been astonished by the depth and beauty of 4K High Dynamic Range, if you’ve ever longed to achieve these results for your own projects, Sony has the ideal camera. Presenting the FDR-AX700. Small as it is, it packs the most power we’ve ever built into a palm-sized Handycam® camera. With advances like 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, Instant HDR, a generous 1” (1.0-type) image sensor and Fast Hybrid Auto Focus, this is the perfect tool for making unforgettable videos.
Focus is always important. And it’s especially critical in large-sensor 4K production. The FDR-AX700 exceeds the need with Sony’s remarkable Fast Hybrid Auto Focus system. Using 273 focus points covering 84% of the frame, the system combines the strengths of both Phase Detection and Contrast Detection for unsurpassed results. You can hold focus even on fast-moving subjects such as sports, breaking news or children at play. Refinements like 4K face detection and object tracking technology make it easy for a director or journalist to follow a subject.
4K High Dynamic Range is sweeping the television market -- and gaining the attention of more and more producers. The FDR-AX700 and its professional siblings (the HXR-NX80 and PXW-Z90V) are the first palm-sized cameras to deliver stunning 4K HDR.. Sony’s choice of Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) means that your results will look amazing on both HDR and conventional televisions – without additional color correction.
High Frame Rate shots can turn everyday actions into slow motion ballet. The FDR-AX700 delivers continuous 1-120 frames per second (fps) Slow & Quick Motion in Full HD. For 24p projects, the result is gorgeous 5x slow motion. There’s more. You also get beautiful time lapse sequences down to 1 fps. In burst mode recording, the camera achieves even higher frame rates: up to 960 fps at specific resolutions.
To deliver unprecedented performance, the camera features an unprecedented 1” (1.0-type) stacked image sensor. The difference is substantial.
The 1” (1.0-type) image sensor of the FDR-AX700 dwarfs the 1/2 or 1/3-type image sensors commonly used in palm-sized camcorders. The large sensor makes for more cinematic imagery, with the blurred backgrounds that cinematographers cherish. Technical advances also boost resolution (14.2 megapixels effective), low-light performance (1.7 lux in Low Lux mode) and speed (120 fps in Full HD).
Fast or unpredictable subject motion can trip up the Contrast Detection auto focus of conventional camcorders. The FDR-AX700 stays ahead of the action using Fast Hybrid Auto Focus (AF). This system combines both Contrast Detection and Phase Detection. So you can lock onto even fast-moving, unpredictable subjects from sports and dance to pets and children. Advanced features work together seamlessly to capture fast-moving subjects with consistent sharpness.
With the ability to reproduce images from deep shadows to piercing highlights, 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) is astonishing. With Instant HDR, the FDR-AX700 empowers you to capture High Dynamic Range without complex post production. Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) recording captures HDR, yet plays back beautifully on both HDR and conventional televisions. For added versatility, the camera also provides S-Log3 encoding.
High Frame Rate shots can turn everyday actions into slow motion ballet. The FDR-AX700 delivers continuous 1-120 frames per second (fps) Slow & Quick Motion in Full HD. For 24p projects, the result is gorgeous 5x slow motion. There's no sacrifice in bit depth and no "windowing" of the sensor. Compared to normal frame rates, there's no crop factor, no loss in angle of view. You also get beautiful time lapse sequences down to 1 fps. And burst mode recording offers even higher frame rates – 240 fps, 480 fps and 960 fps – at specific resolutions.
The FDR-AX700 records 4K (3840 x 2160) using the advanced XAVC-S codec at 100 Mbps. And you can capture XAVC-S Full HD. This sophisticated recording system combines stunning picture quality with workflow flexibility and storage efficiency. For compatibility with legacy systems, the camera also offers AVCHD recording.
The FDR-AX700 comes with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi as standard. Simply turn on and log onto your preferred network to enjoy advanced wireless production.
A camera as advanced as the PXW-NX80 deserves an equally sophisticated lens. That’s why Sony fixed a Zeiss® lens of impressive capabilities.
The FDR-AX700 makes it easy to take advantage of shallow depth of field even in exterior day shoots. There’s no need to carry and mount external Neutral Density (ND) filters. The built-in ND filter wheel has positions for Clear, 1/4 (2 Stops), 1/16 (4 Stops) and 1/64 (6 Stops).
You can control Focus, Zoom, Rec Start/Stop and Rec Review via the LANC wired remote interface and an accessory controller like the RM-1BP or RM-30BP, sold separately. With this interface, the camera forms a powerful, yet simple live solution with the RM-30BP and MCX-500 multi camera live producer, both sold separately.
Sony had a game-changing idea: enable a single operator to run a multi-camera live production. The result was a robust, cost-effective switcher, the MCX-500 multi camera live producer and the companion RM-30BP remote control. In this system, a Tally indicator will automatically appear on each camera’s LCD panel and viewfinder. A red icon indicates when the shot is live (PGM) while Green indicates preview mode (NEXT). The MCX-500 supports mixing between eight video sources, four stereo embedded audio channels plus two XLR Inputs, and a dedicated Title Input. There are both internal recording and live streaming via Ustream, Facebook Live and YouTube Live. (Facebook Live and YouTube Live require V2.0 firmware.)
You can also synchronize timecode among multiple camcorders using our free Content Browser Mobile™ 3.0 app with optional CBKZ-WTCL upgrade and devices running iOS® (9.0 - 10.3) or Android® (4.4 - 7.1) operating systems. Sync to your choice of camcorder or to a time that you determine.
For precise manual focus, Sony’s 0.39-type OLED viewfinder combines high brightness and contrast with the resolution of 2359K dots. The highly responsive viewfinder also eliminates color breaking. For added flexibility in composing shots, Sony supplements the viewfinder with a 3.5-type 1550K dot touchscreen LCD monitor.
The FDR-AX700 takes advantage of Sony’s flexible Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe, which provides power, signal connections and coordinated on/off switching to compatible accessories. For example, you can connect and control Sony’s 2-channel UWP-D Series wireless microphone systems (sold separately).
To extend recording time and flexibility, the camera provides two slots for SDXC™ and SDHC™ cards. Slot 1 is also compatible with Memory Stick PRO Duo™ (Mark 2) / PRO-HG Duo™ cards. To take advantage, Relay mode automatically switches recording to the second memory card when the first is full. Simul mode enables simultaneous recording to two memory cards (for example to create an immediate back-up version).
