Use of the hybrid aspherical lens with low dispersion glass has helped achieve a compact design and improved optical performance. Also, Tamron's unique PZD autofocus drive and the VC mechanism is contributing to downsizing.  Super smooth and accurate PZD  The PZD piezoelectric drive is an internal standing wave ultrasonic motor system. Innovations to reduce parts and simpli fy operation also contributed to the lens's reduced size and weight. Lighter and smaller than other autofocus drives, th e piezoelectric drive uses a standing wave, instead of the traditional traveling wave, to turn and extend the piezoelect ric element. Thus the entire element moves in a standing wave pattern, moving the metal tip (the contact surface) in an elliptic motion. The friction of this movement moves the rotor for a smooth, precise autofocus.  VC (Vibration Compensation)  Focal Length: 18mm Exposure: F/4 1/10sec With VC, the photographer can shoot at a shutter speed up to four stops slower. VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. It employs three driving coils that electromagnetically activate a shake-compensating VC lens group. Since the VC lens elements are held in place only by three ceramic ball bearings, there is smooth movement with little friction. Even when shooting long-range or under low light, the viewfinder image remains stable and tracking response is excellent. very versatile and autofocus is quite fast

so far the photos match those from other lenses.  however, it's easier to change a tire than it is to zoom the lens.  the lens also rotates in the direction opposite from other lenses.  takes getting used to. it also sometimes doesn't connect correctly when replacing the lens after using another lens.  you have to try until there is no message telling you the contacts don't match.  are those the prices one pays  for a zoom of this range?

I've been taking pictures for about 40 years. This lens is the most versatile lens I've ever owned and (you can't beat the price).

Worst Tamron lens I've encountered. I don't know if this newer model is different from the regular B008 model which this replaced (this is the "B008TS" version ["TS" at the end]), as the original lens has some really good reviews.But this is junk - super plastic feeling, the zoom lock is impossible to engage (you have to rotate the zoom ring REALLY hard to get it to line up), the lens hood is really flimsy and extremely frustrating to get to line up, and the autofocus is loud and hunts like crazy. My daughter's 18-200mm Tamron which was half the price, is twice as good. I just can't recommend this Tamron lens.

Way less than I had hoped for

I was surprised how good a results I've gotten from this lens.   I was using a borrowed Tamron 16-300 from maybe 5 years ago, and this lens has given me much better results at what would be half the cost of buying a new 16-300 lens.
