Albeit I have yet to purchase my own 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR, I have been honored to have been able to use it multiple times. I was able to use it with all my Nikon Camera Equipment: (i.e., my Nikon D850; Nikon D5; and my new Nikon Z9--which is in a word: STUPENDOUS), this Nikkor Lens is second-(2nd) to none.

I've had this lens for about 8 months and absolutely love it. I do extensvie High School Sports so this is ideal! Even indoors for Basketball, etc it gives me that extra reach, sharpness, needed. The only drawback and I mean the only is the weight. I have free-handed it for about 2 quarters but my back starts cramping leading me to switch to my 70-200 2.8. For Baseball, Softball, Football, Soccer, etc I use a monopod...you do have to invest in a top notch version though...my $40 version would simply collapse down so I bought a professional grade and no problems since.

Excellent quality and build with super fast focusing either with Autofocus or Manually. Using on my D5. Can be handheld but a monopod is definitely beneficial. I use it almost exclusively for sports but it looks great for nature photos as well.

I read other reviews on this lens and had to get one. It is one of the best lenses Nikon has ever made.. Has lots of controls right on the lens. Take your time read about them all and what they do. I shoot with a Nikon D5 and it controls the lens just awesome. I am so impressed with the quality of lens and images it produces.

Featuring a versatile working range and four stops of shake reduction, this new NIKKOR lens is ideally suited to pro telephoto sports photography. It features 25 elements with ED, fluorite, and SR (short-wavelength refracting) glass. SR elements help the lens deliver less chromatic aberration while shooting. Some elements have Nano Crystal and Arneo coatings as well. The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm lens has a fluorine-coated front element for water and oil resistance. It comes in an entirely weather-sealed design, too. This lens can focus down to 2 meters (6.5 feet) at all focal lengths and deliver up to 0.16x magnification. It can even replace multiple lenses with its wide focal length range of 120-300mm and constant f/2.8 aperture. And to top it all off, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR lens weighs nearly 3.2 kg (over 7 lbs).
Sixty years after the introduction of the iconic Nikon F Mount, the dependable mainstay of every stunning NIKKOR SLR lens since, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR brings a beautifully bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture to the world of pro telephoto sports photography. A versatile zoom range with highly sought after speed and agility, glorious sharpness and bokeh for stunning fast action and portraiture with dazzling subject isolation.
A refined optical architecture gives the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm staggering image rendering properties with quality and resolution one might expect from a 300mm prime. One ED glass element, two Fluorite lens elements and a newly developed SR (Short-wavelength Refractive) lens element work together for brilliantly detailed shots with exceptional color rendering. In addition, ghosting and flare are effectively minimized through the application of innovative ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, for sharp, clear images even when a light source is in the frame.
Chromatic aberration is a common lens anomaly that occurs when varying wavelengths of light fail to collect at the same point, resulting in color fringing. Specifically, short-wavelength light can be difficult to compensate for. The newly developed SR lens element is a high- and specialized-dispersion glass with breakthrough light-refracting properties that specifically target shorter color wavelengths like blues and violets for highly precise chromatic aberration compensation.
AF performance is paramount when photographing athletes and other fast moving subjects at a distance. A newly-enhanced AF servo drive provides optimal autofocus power, resulting in incredibly accurate subject tracking, even for subjects that erratically change speed, for pro dependability shot after shot.
Tack-sharp, action-charged sports shots are easier than ever with a powerful VR image stabilization, optimized for fast action with a SPORT mode option. With VR engaged, image vibration is significantly reduced, equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster. SPORT mode goes a step further, stabilizing subjects that change speed and direction quickly and unpredictably within the viewfinder for accurate shot composition.
The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR adopts controls and operability enhancements commonly found on Nikon's premiere telephoto and super telephoto lenses. The zoom ring, focus function buttons, tripod collar ring and controls are all designed to ensure pro-caliber operability. A Fluorite lens element and magnesium alloy construction contribute to a lightweight, durable lens that covers the focal lengths of multiple lenses for nimble all-day shooting.
With pro photographers in mind, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR was built to withstand less than ideal shooting environments and harsh conditions. The lens body is well-sealed to keep dust and moisture out and the front lens surface features Nikon's fluorine coat to effectively repel dust and dirt for worry-free shooting on any assignment.
A specialized electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism electronically syncs with the camera and makes precise aperture adjustments for fast, consistently reliable exposure control, even during high-speed continuous shooting.
