P 7800 My Favorite Nikon

My first Nikon was the Nikon F, many years ago. I've owned many Nikons over the years, the last being the N1V1 with the 10 - 100 mm lens. Some physical problems mad the use of the manual zoom lenses difficult so I bought the P7800. Amazing camera! It does everything anyone desires, quality of the camera is beyond the best. But, the most important thing is the quality of the photographs. If there is a 100%+ then that's what the photographs are. Quality, portability, ease of use, flexibility, all there. Based on 60 yrs of photographic experience I HIGHLY recommend this camera. Well done Nikon .....

Great Travel Companion

This is probably the only camera that provides the option of taking a self photo using the vari-angle LCD monitor and a remote control. You are able to view and compose a photo of yourself anywhere. Never again you could miss taking a photo of yourself on whatever background as you travel. This is indeed a complete package of an equipment you would ever need for travel. Small and powerful

Frequent Lens Cover Problem

The Nikon Coolpix 7000 series have an unresolved problem on the lens cover system. Make a search on the www to realise that. The repair cost is almost the same of a new camera. Choose a better camera.

Great little gem!!

I love it!! Great little camera, I use it all day long, I can make beautiful prints of 11"X14" like in my D800 with no problem. The viewfinder really helps to my needs. Simply the coolpix P7800 is awesome.

A fine photographic instrument

My first Nikon camera was a Nikkormat FT2, in 1977. The P7800 is my latest, and now only camera. Why I choose to carry the P7800 alone, is that it is a fine photographic instrument, yet easily carried everywhere. Its finest points in my experience are its excellent 28-200 equivalent lens, intuitive buttons and dials for manual interventions, fully articulating LCD, and the latest development of an EVF. Its sensor and processor produce images rivaling those from my digital SLR cameras, only a few years ago. Its full HD movies are of high quality for its class. My rating would have been five stars if the P7800 were capable of faster raw write times. It is the only liability that at times holds my shooting back. Still, I can highly recommend it.

Could be a perfect camera, but...

I've been waiting for the entire digital camera age ( post 2001 ) for Nikon to come out with a good fast full-featured compact camera for street shooting and photojournalism. I honestly believed the P7800 was that camera , so I bought one about a year ago and have shot about 14,000 frames with it. This camera is S-L-O-W to shoot. Like many other compacts, it has way too much lag between the instant the photographer wants to capture the scene, and the camera finally gets around to doing so. I've always been a sharpshooter and capable of grabbing fleeting expressions and micro-moments with cameras. I began my 45 year photo journalism career with a Nikon SP rangefinder film camera ( Nikon's Leica M competitor). The Coolpix 7800 is a descendant of that camera , or rather COULD BE if Nikon would get their collective engineering fecal mater together , and resolve a couple of issues once and for all. SPEED THE CAMERA UP, and clean up the wretched Menu selection process. Te Menus are a gauntlet. I've lost so many shots because I was messing with menus when I should've been shooting. But I lost a lot more trying to do sports, action , and instantaneous pics with a camera that balks. The really exasperating this is the P7800 has the fundamentals to be a perfect camera, but Nikon designed away the joy and functionality

Great Camera

Considering its price, Nikon P7800 is great in everything. It is an all round good camera. But display quality of EVF is not satisfactory.

Great Camera

Bought this for use when DSLR is too big to carry. Great travel camera. Great improvement on my original P7100. Love the lens cap rather than original metal leaf cap.

Not flawless but very, very good.

Image quality, ease of shooting, and collection of features should please most owners. The viewfinder is good with or without glasses (even for myself at -4.0 diopter). It's linear, plenty large, and sharp enough for careful manual focusing and routine use. Some fault the viewfinder's weak colors, but a viewfinder is for composing, not viewing. The lens and image quality according to reviews are mainly why I selected this model. They both exceed my expectations. The only flaw is the image gets shifted while zooming out, but this should only matter if you plan to shoot videos on a tripod, probably not noticeable when hand held. The dedicated quick +/- exposure wheel is great for challenging lighting, such as people on a stage dark backgrounds. The camera Is excellent for technical, such as tight-fitting macro work or copying on a stand, thanks to its lens distortion correction and articulated screen. Construction seems very solid. There are better cameras for sports, but for controlled stills and general snapshots, it does everything I need. I would give 4 stars based on the zoom problem, but that would be a bit misleading for a minor problem given how well it performs overall.

Good travel camera

I bought this camera to take on trips. I wanted a high-quality camera that went beyond a simple point-and-shoot, but I didn't want to lug around a DSLR with multiple lenses. The features that drew me to the 7800 were: size and weight; electronic viewfinder, 7x optical zoom; f/2.0 lens. I had been using a Canon G9 but wanted a similar camera with a faster lens that still could zoom out to ~200 mm (35 mm equiv). I'm still learning to shoot with the 7800 but it is relatively intuitive. This camera reminds me of my old Leica.

My secret to great images!

This is my secret weapon when Im traveling and can't carry a DSLR. Its great when I am doing any kind of sports like skiing or horseback riding and perfect for vacations. The quality and ease of use is amazing. Whether you are telling a story about your family, a vacation you took, or its about an important event, a wedding or you are a professional photographer like me its all about story telling. GREAT technology does not get in the way of storytelling. thats what nikon does. I highly recommend this camera.

Great camera when you don't want to carry kit

Agree with pretty much everything said here already. Exceptional images from small sensor. Must have EVF would not own a camera without a viewfinder. Solid build, fits hand well. Fast lens with good range and image stabilization. Plenty of controls allow you to easily control all aspects of the process, or simply go program and let the camera do all the work for you. Rotating screen makes it easy to get low and high angles. Great all round camera that has become my carry around choice.

A feature-packed wonder

Frankly, I had to "warm up" to this camera upon first usage. There is so much to like and so many features, but with a few, "huh?, why wasn't this included?" things missing. However, what's "missing" is more than compensated for, when you look at the sum of the parts. As an "enthusiast" who has won a few blue ribbons, best of shows, etc., I take my photography seriously, but still want it to be fun and non-burdemsome. As I get 'older', I am finding my beloved,tried-and-true Nikon D300 being used less due to size and convenience. This the reason for opting for the P7800 - and now I can have the features, control and photo quality I need, in a 'grab-and-go' package. Looking forward to the future of photography with this thing.

Love the camera! It meets all my needs and then some! Great image quality.

I want to echo the sentiments of the folks already who have indicated that the camera is a gem. The macro image quality is great. It even has bokeh in such a tiny image format, so portraits and such are nice. Will eventually add a small flash to augment the one on the camera.

Love this lil gem

Perfect camera when you don't want to carry around heavy professional gear! Great for portraits- Love the zoom (equivalent to that of 28-200 mm lens in 35mm [135] format at 2.0 aperture) so basically you get the effect of a larger dslr when you zoom in and shoot headshots- the background blurs beautifully Image Quality- The color, sharpness, and vibrance is spot on and you can shoot both RAW and JPEG Full HD 1080p Video- awesome Variety of Effects/Settings- Its easy to make great pictures using the auto modes such as backlight, closeup, panoramic, night landscape, sports, portrait and many more. And for photographers like me, it also has completely manual settings A Viewfinder AND a Screen- I love that is has both an electronic viewfinder for bright sunlight situations as well as a flip screen for those of you used to using iPhones. But trust me, the quality that comes out of this thing is 1000 times better than the iPhone Built in Flash- Great party camera to grab those snapshots at events The Monochromatic black and white- for when you want to get artsy, love this auto black and white setting Cheers

Much appreciated improvements

The P7800 is a welcome upgrade from my original P7000. The f2.0 lens at 28mm, and the swivel monitor is much appreciated. Waited for this version so I could enjoy using the view finder, though it's now electronic, it's needed in direct sun situations where the monitor is hard to see. In general, the access to menu items has been somewhat better integrated. Very clean files and the ability to shoot raw is makes this a camera I carry everywhere.

Great Camera with an unusable RAW format

This is the best of this series by a long shot, very crisp accurate color and instinctive to use. For some reason, some genious at Nikon decided that the NEF (RAW) format wasn't good enough and supplies this camera with a new RAW format , NRW. I'm sure it's very good but I don't have a program that will run this format, including the very latest Photoshop CC. "Why would they do that", I asked Nikon. and they responded that at some point, a third party supplier will come up with something. Seriously, I have the email. It's a great camera, but it does not have a usable RAW format!

Coolpix 7800

I am a retired Pro Photographer and just got back from a two week vacation. I just don't want to carry the Nikon D3 and three lens and a flash with me for casual photos and some scenics. I picked the 7800 because it is one of the few point and shoot cameras with an optical viewfinder. In the short time I have had it, I find it easy to use and produces image files good enough to make large prints. However the learning curve may take a while due to the many menu options. You can use it as a simple point and shoot or if you want to delve into the menus you can override just about every option. Now I am waiting for Nikon to provide a fix to allow Photoshop and other editing software to read the new raw file format that comes with the camera.

Great IQ, Controls

I bought this camera to have something with good IQ, instead of having a do-it-all lens for my D7100 and D600. These options always left me cold, as the 28-200 FX and 18-250DX lenses are mediocre at best, but you still need the bigger body. The P7800 has surprising good IQ - way better than the reviews, and the long zoom range makes it, for me, a better choice than the Canon, Sony, and Fuji offerings. Nikon forgot to mention that the fill flash works to 1/4000!, which is one of the big selling points of the Fuji X100S. Great controls, esp. manual exp. flash exp. comp, and exp. comp. Love this camera!

Excellent compact digital camera!

I bought the Coolpix P7800 about a month ago. As a professional photographer I am very impressed by the versatility and excellent quality of this digital camera. I love the ease of operation when you use the auto features and very user friendly in the full manual mode. The menu is also easy to use. Having a view finder comes in handy in bright sunlight. The onboard popup flash is another feature that helps to illuminate subjects in low light situations. This digital camera also has a f2.0 lens 28mm to 200mm. Another great compact and powerful Nikon camera. You can also take 1080p digital movies. For a professional photographer it is a great camera to carry with you when you don't want to carry all your professional equipment. For the avid photographer you will love this new Coolpix P7800.

Beware if you shoot RAW

I had read that this series was slow to write RAW files to the SD card. I could not have believed how SLOW. I have a fast card and it still made me pause between easy shots. If you are shooting jpeg, there will be no worries. I returned the camera immediately.

With the Nikon P7800, Nikon has added an essential ingredient to this small camera designed for serious photographers. Nikon has added an electronic eye-level viewfinder. Unlike the dinky little squintfinders that covered not quite 70% of the image and were on some of the P7800's predecessors and which can still be found on one or two competitors, the P7800's 921k high-resolution finder covers 100% of the scene so you can compose precisely. Unlike the optical finder, it does this while still allowing room for a 3-inch, fully articulated LCD monitor.

In addition to the new viewfinder, the Nikon Coolpix P7700 features a magnesium-alloy body and is fronted by a glass 7.1x zoom lens that covers 28-200mm (35mm equivalent), the same focal range as its predecessor, but with a faster f/2.0-4 wide aperture range. Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction is said to minimize camera shake. In Macro Close-Up mode, the lens focuses to within an inch.

Full Manual Control
The Nikon Coolpix P7800 offers full manual exposure control as well as shutter- and aperture priority and program modes. The camera also has 19 Scene Modes and a Scene Auto mode that automatically selects the most appropriate mode based on the shooting situation. In-camera special effects include Nostalgic Sepia, Vivid, and Painting. A noise reduction filter is available for low-light/higher ISO shooting. Another low-light option is consecutive shot combining, which combines a sequence of ima ge s to reduce noise, or HDR to increase dynamic range. The ISO range is 80-1600, boostable to 6400. There are three custom modes so you can quickly switch to your most frequently-used settings.

The Nikon P7800 can capture full 1080p HD video, and video exposure can be controlled using auto, manual, aperture-priority or custom movie mode. Autofocus is active while shooting videos, and the P7700 offers both a built-in stereo microphone and an external microphone jack and an HDMI mini connector and HDMI-CEC support.

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a true system compact, compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, in addition to a built-in pop-up flash.
