Digital cameras, especially Leica digital cameras, are complicated electronic devices, not to mention expensive. I just don't see any reason to try and save twenty or thirty dollars with a generic battery. If you can afford a digital Leica, you can afford to put the genuine Leica battery into it. This battery works with all variants of the M8 and M9, including the M-E and the M Monochrom. On a full charge with minimal chimping by M Monochrom typically gets anywhere between 250 and 450 exposures per charge, only going below 300 in extreme cold or with heavy use of the rear display. I have the rear display configured NOT to show an image review by default (I have to press the "playback" button to see my images), and as such I'm usually at or slightly above 400 exposures per charge. These batteries are reliable (I have currently have three, retired two) and have only had two issues in the seven years I've been using them. One just gradually diminished in capacity until it only gives about 100 exposures and the other no longer gives correct readout, showing full charge until it is completely empty at something around 200 exposures. Both of those batteries are the originals I bought in late 2012 and were retired in late 2018 and late 2019, respectively. I consider 6 to 7 years to be excellent longevity. I also use the Leica M (Tip 262) which uses a different batter type. On that camera, I average about 1100 exposures per charge and after 5 years have still not had any fail, though my first one only charges to 85%. Do yourself a favor and skip the cheap generics. Your digital Leica will thank you with reliable performance for many years.

When my original Leica M-E battery started not charging fully, I purchased this replacement and now have no problems with limited battery life…the old one is now the back-up, and has not been used since.

Leica brand batteries hold their charge well and recharge quickly. And they are designed and tested by Leica to function smoothly in your M8 or M9. There are other non-Leica batteries available for the M8 & M9, but I wouldn't trust them. Many people complain that these ersatz batteries do not hold a charge, that they arrive dead, or that the camera doesn't register them. Since these imitation batteries aren't quality tested by Leica, there is also a slight chance they could explode inside your camera. And anyway, why would you put a cheap battery into a top-of-the-line camera? Spend the extra money not out of brand loyalty, but as assurance that you won't have to worry about a defective battery.
