Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw

Although I had a great experience with Holly, I am wholly dissatisfied with the replacement printer. I previously had an imageCLASS 8560Cdw for 10 years. On the new one the touchscreen is horrible, Most times I have to press the icon several times before it actually goes to the next screen. Secondl the MF scan utility program feels like it was developed in the 1970s. It is several steps back from the printer I am replacing. It's cumbersome. I give my document a name and then when the scan completes, it shows as IMG-001 EVERY TIME and I have to rename it. Third, documents go through crooked every time. Very dissatisfied. There was another printer that I believe would have been equilivent to my previous one but it was on backorder and I didn't have the luxury of waiting.

Won't stay connected to network.

This is an absolute garbage printer with tons of network problems. Every time I need to use the printer, I gotta set it up again.

Terrible

I have never seen anything so unnecessarily complicated. I have yet to be able to print on legal paper unless I hand feed one piece of paper at a time.

Not as Good Print/Scan quality as previous MFPs!

I finally had to sadly retire my MFP8650 printer since it would print with gray horizontal shading on B/W and Color! However, the MF656cdw is inferior in print and scan quality from my old printer. I use scan feature a lot for scanning/emailing signed contracts so this printer isn't going to work for me. In addition, they make installing all features so complicated when it was a lot easier when I gave up reading the manual! I now need to find a MF with fax feature that is reasonably priced since they aren't supported very long!

Good, but...definite limitations

Upgraded from a smaller TR8520. With that, I could have a network printer/scanner that also allowed connections via wifi. This "better" unit will only do either all wifi, or all network. It can't do both. And getting it connected was a definite chore and not for someone that isn't familiar with setting up things in Windows. Check the internet about the issues getting these connected before you purchase. It does print well and the scanning function is much faster, however the actual software on the TR8520 is far superior. It has more options, for example you can scan a page and then that software will allow you "add" more pages. The MF656Cdw does not have that capability and you need a pdf software package that will allow you to edit the pdf.

Bad Print, Bad connection, Jams, Jams, Jams

Over 40 years I have had Samsung, Epson, HP, Oki, and a few I can't remember, but this Canon I will never forget for being the worst, most annoying printer. It starts off with being noisy. Very noisy, it sounds like it is being rebuilt with all of the banging, whirring, thumping and wheezing that goes on for a good 5 minutes when you just change paper. It forgets it is connected to the computer. I have a direct connect. It takes forever to wake up and then says its not connected. I have to un-install the drivers and re-install them for it to work. This is at least weekly. The print quality is meh. When it prints, it likes to print echoes of graphics further down the page. Jamming is what it does best! It gives paper choices on the screen. Don't believe it. I use a heavier stock, not card stock, for marketing. It smells the paper and jams. I'm not kidding. It will give a jam error with the paper still in the tray! And to unjam is no picnic. Even if the paper is jammed at the beginning of the process, you have to turn the printer around, open the back door, which is not where the jam was, and close it, and re-turn the little monster back to its intended position. Then it is ready to jam again. Never again. Either Canon is junk or just my printer. If it is just my printer, is Canon willing to ship me a new one?

Lovely device

Works well, replaced a HP x476dw all-in-one inkjet. There is a known slowness with wired connections - to those in the reviews below that mention slow wake up. Wireless works fine. This will probably resolved via a firmware update. Greta all-in-one. Would buy again. Starter toner might be smaller - same with HP.

Trash

This is the biggest piece of crap all in one. I have been so disappointed. It continually goes in sleep mode and takes forever to wake up when a program needs to print. Half the time the programs can't find the printer which is direct wired not wi-fi. The display sucks. If you scan something from the display it scans it as a picture and you can't change it to pdf. It's not user friendly. Will never buy Canon again for an all in one. Don't waste your money.

Very low yield starter cartridges.

Only purchased recently to replace a canon MX870 that was probably 14 years old. Only used a few times. My issue is the "Starter" cartridges. Just to be clear. There is no clear distinction on your website that shows there is a third, far less yield cartridge. Now that I go back I see it in small B/W print in a dropdown menu "Cartridge 067 CMY: Starter 680 Yield / Black, Standard: 1,350 Yield" Otherwise the website touts double the yield for the regular 067 in big bold characters and colored pictures. Just sneaky, not nice, and downright deceitful. The little extra powder to fill the cartridges would cost Canon a couple of dollars. But, they know they'll get the printer out the door and saddle the consumers with the need to purchase high cost cartridges in just a short time. Or, they anticipate the consumer will decide to get the subscription. I already made that mistake with the subscription for an HP printer in 2016. I canceled the sub and was stuck with a new but bricked printer which I threw in the trash before the second set of cartridges were empty. I swore off HP products forever and went back to my old Canon MX870, which did me great till two weeks ago. Now I get half empty cartridges and will be stuck buying the new cartridges for $390 for 4 replacement 067H after tax. Yes, these are the High output, but that was the plan from the start, I just expected full cartridges. Btw, regular is only $70 less. Finally, with the wording of the low yield starter, it appears the combined output of the CMY is a total of 680. Canon may end up in the trash heap right along side HP.

Terribly unreliable network connectivity.

When it works, it prints very well, but the network connectivity sucks. Its completely unpredictable. Frequently it will print from one of both of my Mac laptops, but it never works with either my or my wife's iPhones. I've tried both Airprint and the Canon Business print app on the phones. Just to be clear, I'm a software developer and I have a lot of background knowledge about wifi and computer networking in general. I wish I'd never bought it and stuck with Brother or HP.

Loaded with features, but complex to configure and set up

I bought this printer about 2 months ago to use at home as a replacement for my HP OfficeJet printer. I don't use a printer very much, but my HP was getting pretty old and the cartridges dry up after awhile if I don't print often enough. I wanted to go with a color laser printer because the cartridges do not dry out since they use a powder instead of liquid ink, but the cost of these type of printers was quite high until I found the Canon MF656Cdw that I purchased for $279.99 on a black Friday deal. I decided to go ahead and make the purchase and I must say I am very pleased with this printer. It is absolutely LOADED with features and is probably a bit overkill for home use, but I am all about getting more bang for the buck and this printer delivers in that area. The print quality is excellent! I will say that getting it set up and working was quite a bit of work. Configuration was rather difficult, and the documentation could use some improving. It was hard to even find the documentation online, but I finally did find it after searching the Canon website. Even with the documentation, the configuration of the printer is very complex. You really need to have some IT knowledge to set everything up, but luckily since I am a software engineer, I could muddle through it. Once I got it configured, it is generally fairly simple to operate for basic tasks such as printing, scanning, copying, etc., which is basically all I needed. There are plenty of other more complex operations that are more geared toward an office environment, but I don't really need that for home use. I would recommend this printer for home use only if you are technology minded, but for the average home user it can be more of a challenge to set up and use.

Horrible. Wont load paper without factory reset each time.

I purchased the MF656CDW and the experience has been horrible. It will not load labels correctly. Cannon has forced me to keep the same printter meaning its been replaced multiple times causing back injury to take care of and the same problem reoccors and cannon support refuses to actually assist me.

Good Quality

Very good quality printing. Laser does a nice job. Overall very happy with the printer/scanner. The toner is VERY expensive. It would be well received if there was a way to cut the cost on the toner cartridges. Not so much a complaint but rather a significant consideration.

Good value laser printer with good features but some flaws too.

Good features and performance which equals very good value at this price point. As is typical with lasers, the cartridges are obscenely expensive and the double-sided scanning can only be performed via pc, not on the control panel which is ridiculous. It's pretty compact but it's heavy as a lead weight.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE A MAC COMPUTER

I bought this 2 weeks ago & will never buy another Canon printer. I have been on the phone with Canon practically every day. The scanner function only works sporadically & communication is not good between the computer & scanning function. I have now figured out a way to jury rig it every time it goes off but this is NOT ideal for my mental health. Also, the functions are very complicated & the manual is terrible at describing them. I will NEVER stray from HP again. Buyer beware.

Easy to set up and prints doublesided pretty quick. I also love that you can scan doublesided automatically and don't have to flip pages over on it which is a bonus for me. :)

Simple and quick installation.

Just purchased the MF656CDW AIO so haven't done much yet but the basics. When I saw the setup guide was only a few pages, I was a little apprehensive. But everything from unboxing to printing the first copy was amazingly simple. Packaging was well designed and removal was a snap. 30 minutes from start to finish. Within an hour I had installed the program on my desktop, and printed successfully from my two desktops and IPADs, scanned successfully from the unit and my desktop, and copied a document. Didn't set up the FAX yet, but the features I expect to use most are working great. Wish setup on all the electronics I've purchased thru the years had gone this smoothly.

Rip Off

Bought this about 7 months ago. Waste of money. A great printer until you have to refill toner. You MUST use the VERY OVERPRICED Canon toner cartridges or it won't work. So if you are on a budget, this is definitely not the printer for you. I would go with a Brother. Mine was a complete waste of money.
