A digital camera I've been waiting for, the 12mp sensor delivers superb image quality - while the pixel count is low by modern standards cramming 40 or 50 mp into the same space is unnecessary for a photographer who is able to frame the shot correctly when taking it. There is so much more to image quality than resolution. Pairing the A7s with a Zeiss Loxia 50mm f2 creates a small, lightwieght imaging powerhouse which renders my world beautifully

The full hd video Iin this camera still stand up as the best in 2023. At times it is hard to tell that it is hd and not 4k.

Hard to write this in 2020 when the 7SM3 has just been released, but the A7S is still a highly capable camera with some great features. Another update would be great, as it’s still a widely used camera.

To be honest I purchased this a second time ! It was one of those deals when you sell something and instantly regret it. The A7s is just one of those cameras that just clicks with me. I like the size and image quality. It has sort of a film look to it for me. I love the dynamic range. And don't believe the deal that you can't print big from a 12 mb senior. I have an 11x17 framed in my hallway that has inspired many a wow response. I only use it tor photo work inspire of it's video prowess. Overall a winer the I plan to keep the time !

After spending a fair bit of time (age related issue!) getting to understand the nuances of the camera I was really surprised just how good it is, rapid shooting was impressive, numerous features, great for night photography which was the main reason for buying it. A very neat size yet robust. Very very pleased indeed.

I was one of the first owners of the Sony A7s. I purchased it based on my years of experience with other Sony professional cameras and professional production gear. Sony has always been a leader in broadcast cameras, VTR's, switchers, wireless systems and countless other broadcast video gear. So it was no surprise that one of their first entrees into mirrorless cameras would be stellar, I was not wrong. I have used the Sony A7s in numerous situations requiring the most dynamic results and have never been disappointed. From the world's most demanding music videos to TV pilots it has never let me down. Do yourself a favor and consider the Sony A7s as an option for your next project. There is something magical about the full frame sensor and quality (Cooke) glass that will make your project find it's place in cinematography folklore,

Yes, the it is somewhat pricy, but the benefits that this camera has to offer cannot be matched by others. The options and performance for both video and stills is unbeatable.

I bought the Sony A7s to shoot film stills. it's one of the only full frame cameras that shoots silently and also has top of the range high ISO ability, as a stills photographer these are two absolute requirements. I also use it for shooting video too which is very good.. I like the files from this camera and do not need mega pixels. I use this camera professionally and find it reliable and does what it says.

The Sony A7s is the perfect companion for every situation. Not only does it have the most detailed Full HD sensor of all cameras in this price range, but also the endless possibilities this camera gives are amazing. It starts with mounting pretty much every lens that was ever designed apart from the m43 standard and ends with low noise performance even in high ISO range. It is small, lightweight and unreached in pretty much every aspect in it's price range and way beyond that. There are a few things which should be improved (hopefully in future models) such as: - 4:3 video mode for anamorphic filming (i put this on top together with 4k 60p because it is sooo important) - internal 4k 60p - internal nd filter - Full HD slowmotion up to 240 frames - keep the menu system it's great, just make it a few less options - shutter button record video, I love the side button, which is great but it should be able to record on the shutter too, don't you think. - 2 sd card slots (pretty much every wedding videographer who is serious about his business uses this camera) we trust you sony, but we need that 2nd slot for double recording in case of card failure! - better and more codecs (the images sooc are amazing already, imagine what a 10bit prores or whatever could achieve) - give us some a6500 AF performance, not for video but for stills, 20mpx would be awesome too. I think that's pretty much it. Add my features and we have the perfect camera.

This camera is as good as what many had review online. But if I have to point out the cons the thing is since most people actually got this camera for video shootings I expect more video features like the AF speed. Unlike a6000 which has 2 focusing speed, a7s only has one. And since this camera has so many features to control, a lot of time I find myself scrolling through the menu for too long looking for the item I need. It will really help if this camera has more customizable short-cut buttons.

Loving the A7S. With the 1.8 55 lens, I'm suddenly far more talented. The best thing is the iso. Why do they even make the other cameras? I had the A7r for a day and immediately went back and swapped for the 7S. Stunning shots. I can see in the dark with style!! My only complaint and it's a big one, is Playmemorieshome and software upgrades and use of online features does NOT play nice with Windows 10. Come on Sony, the whole creative world is NOT on Mac. Sort this out now please.

I purchased this photographic revelation a while ago and it has proven it's worth. Despite it's 12 megapixel sensor it takes excellent stills and in low light situations it execels capturing vibrant colours even in the dimmest of lighting conditions. This camera is best suited for videography. You really have to own one to experience what would have been considered almost impossible a view years ago. Sony products have always been my first choice and have never let me down.

Great low light, wonderful when well lit
By duotone
All the complaints about no 4k is crazy. Seriously, for those complaining about no 4k, go buy a different camera, like the GH4. Of course if you do, then you'll be complaining about the lack of low light abilities.... crazy.... I bought TWO a7s bodies strictly for the low light. Period. Done. There is NO match to the a7s. My commercial work for clients is 95% very low light, and very dusty conditions. The a7s is good. Crazy good! And not just for video, either. I shoot stills (landscape) an...

Great Camera
By Mkizilay
I had NEX-5N before. I wanted to have something better in terms of video capabilities this time. Through out many reviews I decided to get a7S. Very very light, mobile. Extremely good for low light, never seen something like this before. For certain people, 12MP for still photography is a downside, but it works perfectly for me. If you have good full frame lens, it will be super sharp and high quality. Focus Peaking is a great feature for manual focus. XAVC-S is a wonderful codec for Color Gr...

The Sony Alpha a7S is a mirrorless Sony digital full-frame camera that is optimized for spectacular 4k video as well as still photography. Besides its ability to shoot pro-quality video, it captures still images with an exceptionally high dynamic range, and has extreme low-light sensitivity to ISO 409,600 with low noise. The sensor increases image quality by placing small lenses between neighboring pixels; this improves image quality especially in lower light.
What you should know about this camera:
4k Video capable: The a7S can output uncompressed 4:2:2 UHD 4k video to an optional external recording device using HDMI, and can record full HD 1080p video internally. HD video can be recorded in XAVC S format at 50 Mbps in multiple frame rates. There is support for S-Log2 gamma to improve dynamic range. Zebra markers, time codes and picture profiles are available.
Super sound: Audio can be recorded in AAC/Linear PCM format using an internal or external mic.
Full-Frame Sensor: The 12.2MP 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor works with the Bionz x image processor to produce images with very low noise and high dynamic range, with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-102,400, expandable to 50-409,600. The sensor has anti-glare coatings, and the individual pixel lenses have been optimize for neutral, contrasty, sharp images with minimal surface reflections or glare.
Full Pixel Read-Out: There's no line skipping with the Sony a7S, thanks to the lower resolution sensor. Aliasing and moire from large sample gaps are a thing of the past with this model, resulting in a full sensor readout and a clean video image as a result.
Built for (high) speed: In addition to standard 24p, 30p, and 60i frame rates, the a7S can record higher frame rates at lower resolutions. You can record 60p images at 1080p, and 120fps slow motion video at 720p, although you will need to use an APS-C sized area of the center of the sensor.
S-Log Gamma: The a7S camera is equipped with S-Log gamma. Usually found on Sony professional video cameras, S-Log expands the dynamic range by up to 1300% to minimize clipped highlights and loss of detail in shadows. Additionally, for the first time ever in a Sony a camera, the a7S adopts the workflow-friendly XAVC S recording format in addition to AVCHD and MP4 codecs. XAVC S format allows for full HD recording at a data rate of 50 mbps with lower compression for improved video quality.
Fine-tune adjustments: Other video-friendly features include the ability to adjust gamma, black, level and color adjustment; these settings can be saved for use in a multi-camera shoot.
Built-in Wi-Fi: Onboard Wi-Fi and NFC let you connect with mobile devices for instant image file sharing.
Large Ecosystem of lenses: Sony's growing family of E-mount lenses is fully compatible with the a7S, and Sony's legacy line of A (alpha) Mount DSLR lenses can be used via an adapter. Sony's E-mount lenses are optimized for video shooting, with many models featuring ""movie friendly"" features such as smooth focusing, powered zoom control, and silent iris/aperture control.
