Excellent lens and great for all around use. As with all lenses, best performance is achieved by stopping down one stop or more from the widest aperture. The lens is a little heavy, but that should be expected for this range. Great close focusing capability- very sharp.

Very nice lens that produces great photos. I purchased off of a review on a well known photographer's review/use and am happy I did.

This is an extremely good and versatile lens. I gave it to my son to start his business as at 300 mm it was a little soft for my wildlife photos. I wish I hadn?t parted with it because it is very flexible and great for shooting models outdoors.

I use 24-70 and 70-200 both 2.8 for one major benefit - faster focus. Added this lens for all around general purpose lens, it's good but being being spoiled using 24-70 f2.8 VR this lens severely under performs with focusing accuracy and speed. Once correctly focussed focus is very sharp. Zooming is kind of tight. Overall it's a good lens for general purpose.

i got this a while ago as an additional lens for my Nikon Z7 since there were no Teleconverters or telephoto lenses with a focal length over 100mm at the time that i purchased the Nikon Z7.

Why only 4 stars? Because at the 300mm end, it has too much rectilinear distortion for use on architectural or other shots requiring straight lines to be straight. That problem goes almost entirely away at 200mm. Otherwise, I can't say anything bad about this lens, and I can say a lot of good things. I especially like the 0.32X max. magnification ratio. One of my main photographic aims is close-up photography, and many times if I am carrying the D750/28-300 combo for more general photography, I can get some pretty good close-up shots as well. For example, shooting during a garden party ends up mixed with a goodly number of flower and pollinator shots as well. At the same magnification, it isn't as good a close-up lens as my 200mm MicroNikkor, but it takes some careful snooping to find the differences; in other words, most people, almost all of the time, won't notice. The versatility is the main reason I have this lens. It is my one-and-only lens below 200mm in focal length (the others are the 200mm mentioned above, and 500mm phase-Fresnel telephoto) and it does all my "general" photography. It has yet to fail me in that regard (excepting the rectilinear issue noted above).

A great walkaround lens. Works well on Z7 with FTZ adaptor. A little heavy, but nice quality product with nice quality image.

Don’t know about camera compatibility. I think all Nikon mounts, including mirror less, are universal but I’m not positive about mirrorless. The lens itself is a little soft at the length limits.

I bought this lens for my Nikon D850. Image quality is excellent. I shot ocean landscape images and I couldn’t see a difference from my 20mm f 1.8, which is one of Nikon’s benchmark landscape lenses . My only complaint is that it’s HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. Must be getting weak in my old age. Great lens though.

Really sharp images. f5.6 at 300mm is ok but would prefer a faster lens. For the price its a great lens.

This lens was originally purchased for my wife's D7100. In the meantime, in the pursuit of excellence I purchased Nikon's professional Lens Trinity, 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 & 70-200/2.8, which I have since sold upon transitioning into Nikon's mirrorless market. Attached is a photograph taken with my D800 and the 28-300mm lens. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets. I am using the 28-300mm with my Z6 and the results are absolutely outstanding. Recently I have encountered three professional photographers that have the 28-300mm as part of their everyday kit. Two had D5's and the other a D850; this speaks volumes about the outstanding performance of this lens.

I bought this great Nikkor 28-300 to use on my D7500 for wildlife , nature and as an around daily use lens. I'm extremely impressed with the speed of focus, clarity, color quality and depth of field in my first few days of use. Looking forward to more great results as I get opportunities to shoot more photos and test it out on videos.

I sure this lens is probably nice for the right camera but it was not good for the new Nikon Z7 could not get it to focus not even manually. I read a lot of reviews before I bought the lens and they were good. Plus I wanted a lens that I could leave on my camera while I was shooting landscapes but it did not work out for me maybe someone else will have better luck.

It’s a bit heavy but this works amazing if you only want to carry one lens. Fantastic zoom and excellent clarity.

Upgraded to the D 750 this year, which meant also upgrading my lenses to the FX format. This lens is truly superb! The details it captures along with vibrant colors is amazing! It is a great all in one lens, especially when traveling. You won’t be disappointed if you buy this lens!

My best lens in 40 years
By Billy K.
Well, finally, after several months of sleepless nights, and reading countless reviews online, wondering if I should purchase the 28-300 lens for my built-like-a-tank D300, I finally took the plunge a few weeks ago. However, I had to return my first purchase because it had a focus problem. Sometimes I had to turn the camera off and then on again for it to focus properly. The one I now have is super, and actually, for the size of the lens, I think the focus time is very, very good. Also, from ...

For the first time, it really is like having a bag of prime lenses along all of the time.

The previous scenario was D7100 with 18-200 DX VR. That was an excellent setup and we have no complaints about the many great memories on the walls and hard drives -- except it fell short focal length wise a few times when planning ahead was not an option. The move up to FX (D610 and now D750) along with this 28-300 FX VR as the "always within reach camera" is a real game changer. Not hype. Been doing this a few decades. Wow. Why? Because if the lighting is there (and even when it's not...), ...

The Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Nikkor is a long-range wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens for Full-Frame and APS Nikon DSLR cameras. Featuring a 10.7x zoom lens and focus to 18 inches, the lens is an outstanding choice for travel photography, family photography, macro photography, sports and action photography. It is well-suited for both professional photographers and enthusiasts, especially thanks to its next-generation Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, which adds approximately 3.5 stops of blur-free handheld shooting. Thanks to its long range it can replace several lenses, while its Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is fast, accurate and quiet, making it a good choice for both still photography and HD video.
What you should know about this lens:
For FX and DX Nikon DSLRs: The lens is compatible with both full-frame (FX) and APS-sensor (DX) Nikon cameras; on a DX DSLR, the lens provides a 35mm field of view equivalent to 42-450mm.
Excellent Optics: The Nikon 28-300mm lens features two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements to minimize chromatic aberration at all apertures, resulting in sharp images with accurate color. Three aspherical lens elements eliminate other aberrations, and Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission to reduce flare. Lens elements have been engineered for edge-to-edge sharpness in both APS and 35mm formats.
Vibration Reduction (VR): Second-generation image stabilization technology is used here to reduce camera shake by 3.5-4 stops, making this lens a good choice for low-light photography.
Quiet AF: Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is fast, accurate and quiet, for quick focus acquisition for still photography, while its near silent operation makes this lens a very good choice for HD video. Internal focusing means the lens length remains constant even when focusing, so working distance of lens to subject remains consistent. A

Internal focusing means the lens length remains constant even when focusing, so working distance of lens to subject remains consistent. A manual focus override is available.
No zoom creep: The lens has a Zoom Lock switch to prevent the lens from extending when pointed down or while it's being transported.
Close focus: The lens focuses to 18 inches from all focal lengths, making it a near-macro when shooting at 300mm.
Great Bokeh: The lens's 9 aperture blades are rounded, rendering natural-looking out-of-focus areas of the image and rounded specular highlights.
