Spherical but with Tons of Character; Great Upgrade from Rokinon Cine DS

Coming from the Rokinon Cine DS series, one of the priorities I was looking for in my next spherical lens was character. I'm not a fan of the "clinical" look. One of the things I liked about the Rokinon's was they have "dirty" bokeh ? a side effect of an inexpensive lens, but the texture is visually pleasing to me. Since the SLR Magic Microprimes and Hyperprimes have a ton of character and really interesting flaring, it was a logical upgrade! I was caught between the Microprimes and Hyperprimes, but since the Hyperprime series discontinued the 25mm, I figured I'd start by trying the 25mm Microprime. First impressions: This lens is HEAVY!! There's a lot of glass packed in there. Much heavier than the Rokinon, and I can feel the difference in weight shooting handheld. It's bigger than it looks in the picture for sure. While the weight of this lens is manageable, I don't think I'd want to have anything heavier for all day handheld shoots. The build quality is exquisite. Nothing feels cheap ? it's all very smooth, and the stops at the end of the focus/iris range feel like they're made of titanium. My only dislike about this lens is the focus and iris rings are a bit tight out of the box. I've heard this is common with brand new SLR Magic primes, and hopefully it loosens up a bit over time. It's not BAD, it's just slightly on the tight side. And again, the rings turn super smoothly. The tightness of the focus rings can make the lens shift in the EF mount on your camera if the tolerances are loose. Especially when you change focus directions rapidly. So be aware of that. Looking forward to buying more of these Microprimes and taking them on my wedding videography shoots.

The APO MicroPrime Cine 32mm T2.1 Lens from SLR Magic offers apochromatic capture in a lighter-weight, cine-style form. With a 46mm image circle projection, this wider Canon EF-mount lens is suitable for use with 8K cameras with high-resolution full-frame sensors. Its apochromatic elements are designed to correct color aberrations often seen in high-contrast images or shots captured with wide-open apertures.

Cine-style focus and iris gears and an internal focus design enable you to pull focus without the length of the lens changing, suiting this lens for use with rod-mounted accessories and matte boxes. The APO MicroPrime Cine lenses feature 150 Degree of focus rotation, a common 85mm front diameter that eliminates the need for multiple matte box adapter rings, and an internal 82mm filter thread.
