Great clarity to photos and easy to use

This is a top quality product designed to get the best photos possible in all lighting conditions. The quick manual focus ring is very useful to sharpen images when lighting conditions are not perfect. Fits and works nicely with the a992 camera body. Expensive at £1899 but then you get the quality and the photographs produced will be worth it over time. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the weight and bulk. It is a lot heavier than my previous Sony lens and the camera with new lens fitted does not fit properly into the Sony camera bag

Not up to Zeiss quality

I bought this lens used and use on a Sony A900 and occasionally an A580. My primary reason for buying it was the 24mm end. I needed a decent wide angle. After a lot of testing I am sorry to report that this copy is very soft at all apertures at 24mm. Other focal lengths all have their "sweet spots" but 24mm doesn't. Very disappointing, to say the least.

Fast focus, clear center quality, horrible edges.

The autofocus on the lens is extremely fast, accurate, and quiet. Build quality is exceptional, the lens feels solid but is also very heavy because of it. If you usually crop your images in postproduction then you don't need to worry about this, but I found that there was a significant amount of Vignetting at f2.8 in bright sunlight. For a lens that is over $2,000, I'm not sure I would recommend it.

This is a serious lens

This lens is being used on my a99II and I can't say enough about the razor sharp images the pair produce. Having tried Sigma and Tamron equivalents, there is no reason to go with any other option. The Tamron is sharp but fails to make use of the Sony's AF-D (Hybrid Phase AF). It's solid and very well built and I look forward to many years of service from it. It cost more, but in the long run, it's well worth it to me.

A must have!

This lens is spot on, super sharp when stopped down to 4.5-5.6 its perfect. at 2.8 its pretty good, but i have never seen a perfect lens wide open. I shoot loads of events meaning quality matters, it has a stong built, pretty heavy but it sits nicly on the bodt. I don't pixel peep (that much) but this is substantially better then the sigma 24-70. Overall paired with the a99ii this is my most used and best lens!

Fine Sony work again

I have Sony cameras since the days of Cybershot and now have stuck with it all the way through to Alpha 99ii. Taking my pictures more serious than ever, I see no reason to change other that there is no magazine support and I have to seek out people like Gary Fong or Tony Northrup to keep my right at times.

SSM a dud

SSM motor broke within 16 months of purchase after I changed out battery. The repair shop refused to fix it and said the motor should have lasted 10 years. Frustrating that the lense won't allow manual focus when the motor broke because the lense won't set the f-stop.

A perfect companion to the Alpha99, a weighty piece of kit but that's the trade off for the quality. This is now my standard lens.

Quality glass

By RORY D.

I absolutely love the image quality when I shoot with this lens. You can't go wrong with Zeiss paired with a Sony body. I would highly recommend this lens.

Create powerful scenes with this Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. It covers a standard range from wide-angle to portrait, letting you use this digital camera lens for a variety of purposes. A consistent f/2.8 aperture ensures it's fast throughout the zoom range, letting your camera handle various lighting scenarios, while thesilent aperture drive keeps it working smoothly. The focus is silent is well, ensuring that grinding or focusing noises do not make their way onto your movie soundtrack.

When you want to take photos in challenging conditions, this Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 lens rises to the fore. Aspherical lens elements reduce flareand ghosting substantially, while the extra-low dispersion glass produces significantly less chromatic aberration even at wide focal angles. As a result, this zoom lens is ideal for bright sunlit days where pinpoint precision is required as well as for darker rooms where light gathering efficiency is prized.

This powerful digital lens works with A-mount full-frame and cropsensor cameras thanks to its versatile aperture width, and with a mount adapter,it can even be used with E-mount camera systems. Its compact dimensions, dust and moisture resistance and light weight ensure this Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is versatile enough to take anywhere.

Zoom with prime lens performance
The popular ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 zoom has been refined for even better performance. This lens is already widely regarded as being more like a prime lens than a zoom in terms of image quality, but the new edition further reduces ghosting for a notable improvement in clarity. Lens processing has also been revised for faster subject tracking, and it is dust and moisture resistant.

• Outstanding image quality
• Bright F2.8 standard zoom
• Smooth, quiet focusing
• Versatile control

Prime lens quality in a versatile zoom
Prime lens-class resolution and contrast are achieved thanks to two aspherical elements and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements in a precision ZEISS optical design.

Great results in low light
A bright constant F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range means consistent exposure settings at any focal length plus improved low-light capability.

Smooth, quiet SSM focusing
The SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive system coupled with an internal focus mechanism achieves smooth, silent autofocus operation and fast response.

Focus mode switch and hold button A focus mode switch and focus hold button on the barrel offer extra focusing versatility and control.

Lens Configuration
Legendary ZEISS quality manufactured and calibrated specifically for Sony imaging products. The ZEISS T* coating contributes to exquisite rendering and contrast.

Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 Vario-Sonnar T* Zeiss ZA SSM II, Alpha A DSLR Mount Lens Features

  • Unmatched ZEISS T* (T-star) Coating: ZEISS T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces. The T* coating contributes to outstanding image quality, with high contrast and uniformly excellent resolution right out to the image edges.
  • Circular Aperture: When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
  • Aspherical Lens Elements: Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight.
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.
  • SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor): SSM is a piezoelectric motor that contributes to smooth and silent AF operation. The motor produces high torque at slow rotation, and provides immediate start and stop responses. It is also extremely quiet, which helps keep autofocusing silent.
  • Dust and Moisture Resistant Design: The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures such as the Sony's a7 series of cameras.
  • Internal Focusing: Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change when focusing. Other benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient when using a polarizing filter
  • Focus Hold Button: Once you've adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera's custom settings.
  • Distance Encoder: The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject. During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene.
  • ADI Flash Metering: when using a flash that has a built-in distance encoder. It provides automatic metering that is virtually unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. Precise distance information is obtained through the encoder, and this data is used to compensate the flash output accordingly
  • Improved Internal focusing system: 4x faster subject tracking
  • Silent AF and iris (aperture) Drive: ideal for movie capture
