Lense Creep!

I bought this lense through the used department and it never worked right, I missed the return "window" nd was stuck with it. I did get the warranty and they had the lense for over three months and still did not fix it. I ended up trading it in for a 18-135 which I love. I was totally disappointed with this purchase but I am sure the lense would have been awesome had I purchased it new... I will never do that again, lesson learned!! Other thn it being heavy and the crazy lense creep, the few images that I was able to capture were beautiful!

A very fine all-purpose lens

I bought this lens along with a Nikon D50 body when the camera first came out. This lens and the camera, along with a small holster pack, has accompanied me on several trips and endured a short season of sports shooting during the two years I have owned it. In strong light, it holds its own with Nikon's own lenses and is (reportedly) superior to Nikon's own 18-200 lens (non-VR variety). In softer light it doesn't seem to have Nikon's contrast...but can be punched up in post-processing as the lens itself is quite sharp. In fact surprisingly so all the way out to 200mm (I have now run tests against the Sigma 70-300APO and the Nikon 80-200 ED IF), The lens is smooth and "positive" in action and as an all round lens, is hard to better except for not having vibration control. It obviously lacks the speed and contrast of lenses in the $1000 plus range, but otherwise holds its own.

Not bad for the buck!

Over all this is a good lens. I shoot landscape and automotbiles. I shoot primes for cars, but this does purdy good in the field. I've not tried Nikons 18-200 (hard to get) but reading the reviews made me decide that type of zoom would be a good option to have a walking around lens. Ran 382 frames through two weeks ago at Red Rock, Valley of Fire and Zion. Good overall, though the light was flat so I am not sure that is a good way to judge this lens. Seems well built and everything has a good feel to it. I would say yes to a friend

Wonderful lens for my Nikon D50

The reason I did not give it 5 stars (only 4) was because there might be a lens out there that is better. I just don't know if there is one!

About Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Autofocus Aspherical Zoom Lens for Nikon

This high zoom ratio lens is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras, and is fully compatible with all Nikon Digital SLR cameras including the D40 and D40x It is capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from wide-angle to telephoto. Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and two hybrid aspherical lensesoffer the utmost correction for all types of aberrations, and enables this extended range super zoom lens to be housed in a compact and lightweight construction of 70mm (2.8") diameter, and 78.1mm (3.1") in length, and weighing just 405g/14.3oz. The new lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem of digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7") at all focal lengths and has maximum magnification of 1:4.4.

The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which prevents the front of the lens from rotating, making it particularly suitable for using circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing, ensuring convenient handling and ease of use. Azoom lock switch eliminates 'zoom creep' during transportation, a convenient addition when traveling.
