Very Good to Excellent

Very good to excellent results using this lens on my D 750, D 810 or D 850. I specifically bought this lens because I needed a back up to my 24-70mm f2.8 lens and I had no disappointing shots with it at all, it's since been retired to the D750 which I gave to my 7 year old grandson & can't wait for him to be allowed to use the camera & lens!

Nikon 24-120mm

I own this lens since 2004, bought it for my F100 and it worked great, was very happy. Then digital came and it was useless on DX for me, kit lens with it's 18mm wide was better choice. Then I got D700, and the lens is out of the drawer again. I've read many complaints regarding softness of this lens, but mine is sharp and the range on FF camera is god. For people photos I always prefer fast fixed lenses and personally own 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 105mm lenses. But when I'm out shooting landscapes, this lens is fun on my D700. [@]I gave 4 stars because now there are newer alternatives, but if you can get a deal on this one used, go for it!

Great all purpose lens

This lens is great for us FX users that want to keep it light. This lens can shoot in various situations from outdoors to at a concert. If you don't have the money for the fast glass this will provide performance that will be hard to beat.

A Perfect Lens (almost)

This is a great all around lens. Yes, I wish it was longer 200mm. Yes, I wish it shorter 14mm. If it was, it wouldn't be an almost perfect lens. Too many reviews based on someone else's opinion. I almost didn't purchase a used one based on some reviews; the price was too good to pass up and I'm glad I didn't. I have a few prime lenses for special photowork and this lens has just as much contrast. sharpness and color control as they do (Leica 50mm f/2 & Canon 70-200L f/4). It's better to try one in a retail camera store than rely on someone else's opinion. Try one for yourself.

Not Sharp

This lens seemed like a good fit, but it is not. If you shoot landscapes, maybe it will work for you, but in its wider angles, this is a poor lens as focus falls off fast when shooting full length. In other words, focus on someones face and only their stomach will be sharp.

At my age, VR is a good thing

Having used other lenses (primes and zooms - Nikons and others) I believe I have found the best VR general purpose lens for my highly addictive NAS hobby. I thought I could handhold to approx 1/30. Was I wrong. The difference in sharpness with VR on/off is significant. The only drawback to this lens is the aperture...wish it was wider, but then it would cost a lot more. I have two of these lenses. One I use on my N-80/F-100. The other, my young daughter uses on her N-80/D-40. Would I recommend this to a friend?Absolutely!

The ONE lens to carry

I have owned this lens for over a year now. If I am only going to carry one lens, this is the one I choose. Obviously prime lenses are going to perform better, but IMHO this lens is a reasonable compromise across the board. I have gotten some reasonable landscapes and "snapshots". In general, I have been disappointed with it as a portrait lens, but it can generate some passable shots, especially if you are really careful with the background. I am not a real fan of its "bokeh"- a $5.00 word that I really don't understand. I do know that I am much happier with the backgrounds on my 85mm 1.4, but as long as I keep bright highlights out of the background, the blur suits me ok. I wish it was just a stop or two faster, but I could probably say the same with every lens I own. I am happy with the lack of vignetting, especially at wide angles. There is some distortion, especially at the wider angles, but nothing that can't be "fixed" in PS, or just avoided in the first place by watching your framing. In short, I own 10 lenses, and this one probably sends 50% of the time on the camera. It doesn't give the greatest shot, but you will get a lot of shots you otherwise would have missed. The only downside is I have never gotten the panning/autoVR stuff to work as advertised. Probably didn't spend enough time playing with it. The VR does seem to work as expected, and I have become a big fan. I regularly shoot at well under the 1/focal-length recommendation.

Good general use lens

Use it on my D200. When I'm not doing commissioned work or shooting with intent I usually have it on my camera. I like the diverse zoom it offers...decent from the wide to moderate end. I've always been a big fan of the VR series and this lens works nicely for my expectations. It's not professional grade and doesn't have great aperature settings (not very fast) but for a general use lens it fits the bill. The two biggest complaints I have about the lens are that the case is made of plastic instead of the tougher alloy material...and the focus and zoom rings are backwards. Focus is toward the base while the zoom's out toward the front. Took some getting used to...and I still find myself bumping the focus once in awhile because of the way I'm used to holding my camera. Other than a few quirks it's a great general use lens. Not too expensive for the features and works well for everyday snap shots. If you're looking for high end this isn't the answer...but for an everyday lug around it's a good choice.

Quality for the money

Good Nikon quality glass. Just shot an indoor wedding, excellent length and light weight. VR a definite plus but marked additional battery usage when engaged. Photos were in the good to excellent range.

Great lens!!

I used this to photograph a 90th birthday -Family Reunion for a friend as my first experience with it. Had no problems! VR was a great asset! The range this lens offers was perfect for the job. Since then I've used it for a wide variety of images. I'm delighted I got it and definietly recommend it!

Great all in one lens

This lens is a replacement for an earlier model that I own. I have really enjoyed the older lens and I am enjoying the new one with VR capability.

Better Than You Think

When I first recieved this lens I was less than happy with how sharp it appeared. On my LCD the images looked sharp, yet on the computer they looked soft. It took me getting prints to fully see sharp this lens truly is. I have used this lens for weddings and for sporting events, it has never failed to give me sharp images and good contrast. It is however a heavy lens. I don't mind heavy lenses, others however might not like how heavy it is. The focus speed with the 24-120 is top notch. It tracks quickly with no noise. Can't ask for more than that. I would highly recommend this lens to anybody. It's priced right and performs like no other in its class.

Great lens for the price

This is a great lens for the money. It is not super fast and not the best for low light but still with the vr technology I have great shots at slower shutter speeds than I chould normally use. I would recommend this lens to anyone who can't afford Nikon's more expensive 2.8 series.

VR technology helps eliminate image blur caused by camera shake, particularly when shooting in low-light conditions, allowing photographers to use shutter speeds about three times slower than they would ordinarily use to get sharp, well exposed images.

Another feature of the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens is Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor Technology for fast, accurate and nearly silent focusing

In addition to Vibration Reduction, the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens includes a selection of Nikon advanced technologies such as Manual/Automatic mode, two Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and two Aspheric lens elements, Silent Wave Motor Technology (SWM), Internal Focusing construction (IF), Super Integrated Coating (S-IC) and G-Type design.

The G-Type feature is designed for the newest Nikon 35mm and digital SLR models that allow aperture control directly from the camera body. The design facilitates better lens handling and helps photographers keep a more positive grip on the camera. This firmer grip and balance helps photographers get sharper images, even as they adjust exposure and quickly shoot their pictures.

Distance Technology (included in D-type and G-type Nikkor lenses) provides precise distance information from the lens. This information is incorporated into exposure calculations for both ambient light and flash illumination, as well as combinations of both. The distance information enables more precise calculations, leading to improved exposure control.

Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Nikkor Lens Features

  • VR operation offers the equivalent of using a shutter speed 3 stops faster at 120mm
  • 2 Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for minimized chromatic aberration
  • Nikon D-Type design provides precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes
  • G Type DX Nikkor is designed exclusively for use with Nikon SLR models where aperture is controlled from body
  • 2 Aspherical lens element for low distortion
  • Internal Focus (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance
  • Rounded diaphragm to make out-of-focus elements appear more natural
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Fully compatible with D1X, D1H, D100, F5, F100, N80, N75 and N65
