Review Summary

I've been using this 24-70mm Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens now for about 4 years. Here is what I've found. Wide open at 24mm it has very poor sharpness at the outer 1/3 of the frame. Once stopped down to about f/11 at 24mm it gets ok sharpness for acceptable enlargements up to 24" x 36". From about 35mm and up its sharpness is very good at f/5.6 and up. So, if you want a really sharp extra wide-angle lens, I recommend you get a single focal length 24mm or 28mm lens. This lens is not recommended for local lengths less than 35mm. The big advantage of this lens is that it is fairly portable and light compared to others. Since this lens does have limits in the lower focal lengths below 35mm, I have to give it 3 stars.

This lens is well built and has excellent optics. While I am sure that the Sony 24-70 GM 2.8 lens is incredible, it is also very large and relatively expensive. The Zeiss 24-70 is much more compact and fits my budget better.

I have started carrying my a7iii pretty much everywhere. If I am taking the camera with just one lens the T* FE24-78 is my go-to. Sure it can be a bit limiting but if you don't want to carry all your kit around when you are out for a lunch-time walk this is a brilliant little lens.

I had the 24-70 f 2.8 but damaged my lens. It still works but I destroyed the filter threads. it turns out this f/4 is smaller and works fine. Full frame lenses are expensive. if you dont need the faster f 2.8 this is excellent.

I bought this to replace the 24-70 2.8 that I had for my Canon system, to use for low light theatre photography. I was hoping that the high ISO ability of the Sony sensor would compensate for the loss of one stop, and it did not disappoint.

Crystal clear with minimal chromatic and peripheral aberration- for most situations, as good as a Gmaster!

I bought this for Christmas and I'm so happy I did. I was looking for a wide angle lens, but this was a much better find as it met my wide angle requirements, but also has a Zoom as well. As this is an "all in one" solution really good for everyday trips, much lighter than the telephoto, and great for city breaks or generally trips.

This lens is amazing for the price. It?s portable than most lenses and has zoom all while staying at F4, and the photos still come out incredibly sharp!! The auto-focus is amazing for sports photography and video. I can?t wait to use this lens for so much more!

Happy so far. Will not really know until the new year. Solid build and great light collection. Think it is a good choice for an ll round lens. Definitely superior to the cheaper 50mm prime lens.

I've seen a number of 'reviews' saying that this lens is really poor at the edges but either I've got a good example or they have improved the lens over the years as my copy is pretty good. There is some softness at the edges, which doesn't improve by stopping down, but it's not as bad as a lot of other lenses I've used (mainly Nikon F-mount and Olympus M-Zuiko). Overall I would rate image quality at 8/10. The design is nice and simple, with a nice smooth zoom ring. Weather sealing has been great so far.

This lens is recommended if you don't wanna get any Alpha series cameras with the kit lens. It is great as an a rounder, and something to use before upgrading.

Good basic lens. In 2021, don’t buy it full price. Items been out for a few years and hasn’t been updated. That said, pretty great IQ. It’s not super sharp in the corners and it’s just not that fast (aperture wise). Still leaps and bounds cheaper than the GM, but I would buy 3rd party over this any day. Autofocus is good, but not brilliant. I sold mine for some other gear I needed and ended up buying the variable aperture kit lens to cover my baseline.

Good lens, great for travel. Starter lens, if you are looking for portrait get a prime, for landscape it is a wonderful sharp lens!

The lens is great, I just wished that the price drop happened during black friday instead of after.. could've saved a lot of money.

At the time I got this I had three alpha bodies. The a99ii , a7iii, and a7Riii. The a7iii came with the 28-70mm kit lens. I had been using the Zeiss 24-70 F2.8 on my a99ii. I tired of switching back and forth with the A mount 24-70 on a LA-EA-4 adapter. I sold the 28-70 and purchased the Zeiss 24-70 F4 E-mount. zI would give the edge to the Zeiss f2.8 but the smaller and lighter f4 has advantages in size and weight. Unless I need the extra f-stops I normally use the f4 on either E-body.

I bought this lens last month just for portrait but I discovered this is the best general purpose lens ever used on A7RIII

I decided that f/2.8 was not necessary for my applications. I also like the size and weight of this lens. It feel very durable and I would compare it favorably to other brands higher end lenses.

One of the most practical and balanced Zeiss zooms around for the FE mount. The lens is a little soft around the edges at the wide-end (24mm) due to optical compromises, but otherwise renders colours and details worthy of its Zeiss badge. The zoom ring is smooth and the AF is near instantaneous. At 426 grams, the lens balances nicely with my small A7II full-frame body. Most of the alternatives with equivalent or larger apertures render the A7II too front-heavy. Pity that my first copy was defective out of the box (the AF motor squeaked), but Sony Malaysia has graciously replaced it with a working copy.

A great option when traveling light is a necessity. Has great Zeiss colors and micro-contrast. Only negative is unsharp corners at the wide end. Stabilization is very effective at all focal lengths.

Being a Canon DSLR user I thought I would give mirrorless a try. I recently purchased a Sony A7ii, battery grip & this lens all new, and for less than the price of a Canon R body. I haven't given the lens a proper full on test but so far the shots I have taken, I am very pleased with.

General zoom for A7R

Lens is a little larger and heavier than 55/1.8 but covers a nice range. Tests I did on sharpnes in the corners shows very good performance as does a number of independent tests not as good as the two primes (35, 55) but you won't notice this for 99% of your shots. It is an ideal walk around lens and fits nicely in a small camera case.
Excellent Lens
By DBrown
I have to say I love this lens. After putting it through some tests I found it to be very sharp throughout the len's range. Reading some reviews about the focus speed being slow, I didn't have this issue...it seems as fast as any other F4 lens I have. Great everyday lens...tad on the heavy side but I'll take that any day over being cheaply built.
