Zeiss 85mm 1.8 for Sony Full Frame I read everything I could find on this lens, including: reviews of the lens itself, comparisons to the Sony FE 85mm 1.8, and comparisons to others brands for Sony. I own the Sony/Zeiss 55 1.8 and the Sony/Zeiss 16-35mm 2.8. They are both exceptional. When Adorama offered the Zeiss 85 for $869 on Cyber Monday, I bought the lens. It is phenomenal. I believe there are critical qualities to glass beyond sharpness. The Zeiss lens is sharp and beautifully soft simultaneously. The color rendition and color contrast is perfect. The images from Zeiss 85 have that intangible magical quality about them. Everyone who views the portraits I have shot with this lens is blown away, as am I. Yes, it is more expensive than other 85s, but it is well worth the price difference.

With so many e-mount lenses on the market it's hard to decide which one is right for you. Well let me tell you, this is a PHENOMENAL lens. I shoot professionally but enjoy street photography on the weekends. I wanted a lens that had a little more reach so I could capture moments without being too close to my subjects. I tried a 70-200 but all that does is draw attention, and ruin moments. That's when I decided on the Zeiss 85mm. I took it out of the box, then went on a 4 hour shoot. Uploaded the images and my jaw dropped to the floor. It has beautiful colors, detail, focus, bokeh, depth of field.... it's everything I wanted and more. This lens will be staying on my camera for awhile! I'm in LOVE. If you're looking for a lens in this focal range, I HIGHLY recommend this one!

Like other Zeiss lenses the Batis line has a passionate following and there are so many upsides to this lens: Colors are saturated, sharpness is corner-to-corner, image quality is simply startling, focus is quick and on-point. The bottom line is that I have used other third-part lenses on my Sony a7r iii and have either sold them or sent them back. My base-line has been Zeiss Milvus lenses; which are all manual focus so when I shopped for an auto-focus lens I tried a couple other brands and though the IQ on them was acceptable, it was not on the same level as Zeiss. This Batis 85mm hits the high notes as well as my Milvus lenses and I am exceptionally pleased to have it in my bag. This lens is not as heavy as the Milvus' but its construction remains solid. Glad that I own it!

I repurchased this lens. Once it was gone, I missed the focal length and it?s clarity.

It has become my new favorite lens to use. The AF is super fast and it's a light enough lens that you don't feel like it's overwhelming. Highly recommend!

Installed on the Sony A7Riv it balances well and seems like a natural fit for the high resolution camera. Images are sharp edge to edge even wide open at aperture f1.8. Build quality is excellent as with all Zeiss lenses. I highly recommend the Zeiss Batis 85mm lens.

The lens compact , quick, easy to pack. Perfect travel lens . Very flexible with regards to landscape portraits for walk , every day pictures. Personally, I primarily shoot with otus and milvus manual lens and this lens is for the carefree moments . The single word to describe lens is that it is fun!

Beatiful bokeh, supersharp lens. The only thing i gave it 4 stars is because it is a brand new lens but i found a dust or an etch on the glass inside. But i read about it, that it can happen to any copy of new lens as long as it does not affect quality if images its fine with me. I cant wait to bring it with me on our vacation a few months from now!

Exceeded my expectations! I’ve been debating between this one and the 1.4 and I decided to go with this one because I watched a side by side comparison video and I didn’t think the difference was visible enough to spend an extra $ for it. The bokeh is round and beautiful, the lens is sleek and balances well on my a7rii. Super excited about this lens

Tested both the Sony 85mm f1.8 and this Batis and I would say they are very very close, but the Batis wins out slightly. Here a quick comparison that basically Echos the reviews: Same: autofocus - both lenses focus very confidently and quickly on my A7III. Both move between the ends of their focus range very quickly and quietly. i even tested this for fun and counted how often I can focus alternating between close and infinity per minute and it was “within the margin Of error” of my amateur test. Almost same: center sharpness and edge sharpness, but Zeiss is just slightly sharper, really just by a tiny bit. Zeiss better: warmer/better color rendition and better contrast when you pixel peep (micro contrast is what some people call that I guess). Build quality seems better and it’s built in Japan vs China. Zeiss is also weather resistant, while the Sony isn’t. Sony better: slightly smaller and lighter, but not a big enough difference for me to matter. Quite a bit cheaper for almost same performance. Also, the Sony has an assignable Button on the lens. Negative in both: both lenses focus approx at the aperture of your exposure, which is only a small problem when you need to use a smaller aperture in low light. No idea why they don’t always open up all the way while focusing, like most lenses do on other systems. You can actually see this happening when you look into the lens while someone takes a picture of you. There might be a technical reason in the Sony system, but it’s not ideal, albeit an isolated issue for most people. I shoot this lens wise open most of the time - that’s what I bought it for. Definitely recommended, but the same can be said on the Sony 85mm

The ZEISS Batis Lenses are the first full-frame autofocus lenses for Sony's E-mount cameras to be exclusively developed and distributed by ZEISS.
This new family of lenses is particularly suited for the use with Sony's alpha range of mirrorless full-frame system cameras.
The Zeiss Batis lense makes optimal use of the camera sensors, capturing every last detail with impressive contrast and high resolution. As well as offering fast and reliable autofocus, the Batis lens also support manual focusing, allowing users to choose the best option for each individual situation.
The sleek, modern design - with smooth surfaces reminiscent of the high-end ZEISS Otus lenses - emphasizes the superior quality of this new lens and gives the Batis lens an unmistakable look and feel.
For the demanding photographer, the cutting-edge OLED display showing the focus distance is a major highlight - an innovation that is currently unparalleled in the world of camera lenses. The electronic display is easy to read even in low light. It shows the distance between the camera system and the focal plane as well as the depth of field.
ZEISS Batis lens is also furnished with dust and weather seals, allowing it to be used in even the harshest weather conditions.
The fast, quiet AF drive with linear motors keeps the subject crisply in focus even when shooting in hectic situations. In addition, a handy, rubberized focus ring supports manual focusing, providing the user with full creative freedom when it comes to image composition.
The ZEISS Batis lens has a 'floating elements' design which compensates for aberrations of the lens at different distance settings.
The ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 is a moderate tele lens which offers 11 lens elements in eight groups and features the ZEISS Sonnar optical design. The lens elements are made from special types of glass and designed to ensure superior image quality. The ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 is a particularly good choice for wedding photography and portrait shots, offering the high speed which provides plenty of creative scope to bring out the main subject. Thanks to its optical image stabilization, the ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 can capture outstanding images even under difficult, shifting light conditions.
