I have only had this lens for one month but cant take it off my camera, its small and compact with a great range. The lens performs well at all focal lengths and is sharp across the whole image, I swapped my 24-105 to this lens and it has been a game changer, the extra 4mm width is amazing, its so sharp cropping in to compensate for the reduced max zoom isn't a problem. If you want a sharp. lightweight lens this is the one.

Bought the 20 - 70 f4 recently, having owned a Sony 24- 105 f4 for some time. The new lens is superior in my opinion in all regards. Resolution and contrast is top notch. Remarkably, at 20mm f5.6, it gives the acclaimed 20mm f1.8 at the same aperture a run for its money with quality virtually indistinguishable. Autofocus is spot on and reliable. Weight and size are perfect for an A7 series body. The only negative for me is that there is quite strong field curvature at the wide end. This is only really something you have to consider for distant shots such as landscapes where the focus plane can be closer at the edges than the centre of the frame This is largely resolved by making sure the you focus the center on the most distant point in the frame. To be clear I am not referring to the barrel distortion that is corrected either in camera on jpegs or in software from raw images. I am not at all bothered by this and it is completely corrected for all but the most critical applications. Overall I would highly recommend.

A great all-in-one lens for general day-to-day photos and especially useful for travel on a Sony A7CII. Really good resolution under most lighting conditions. A slight amount of 'noise' is noticeable when 'pixel-peeping' when used in dark interior setting but that's not surprising given that it's an f4 lens. Not used it yet for video so cannot comment on this aspect. Highly recommended given its size, weight and focal range.

This lens replaced the Sony "kit" lens that came with my new a7C II camera -- after a lot of research, my first foray into the mirrorless, full frame realm of cameras. Truth to tell, the kit lens lacked the sharpness I was looking for so the move to the 20-70mm f4 G has turned out to be a great move. While still early days with this setup, initial results have been impressive with the edge to edge sharpness I was looking for. This is also a quite versatile lens, handling wide shots with excellent clarity, as well as 70mm zoom duties -- also nice and crisp in a pretty wide variety of lighting situations. One unexpected bonus is the closeness of its abilty to focus, giving this lens really decent macro uses. I bought this camera for travel and, when I can justify the budget for another lens, plan to use this lens in combo with a 70-200mm zoom. Pretty excited to be able to cover over 90% of what I shoot with just two lenses! Thanks, Sony.

This lens is a good travel lens is very versatile the wide at 20 is enough at 70 you can use crop for a further zoom . Is a very light . Would have been good if can get this lens at 2.8 but then it would be less portable

The extra few millimeters gives you a wide range of creativity options, especially if you like to do landscapes like myself.. This replaced my. 24 to 70. Zeiss. from Sony. And this. lens is much quicker and sharper. Very. very pleased..

I have been using this lens for over 9 months now and have been very pleased with the results. It produces very sharp images and covers most of my general photographic needs. The extra 20 mm wide angle helps me capture those dramatic landscapes and images are surprisingly crisp and sharp for a lens in this price bracket. It's also my 'go to lens' for when I go on holidays

The AF super quick, IQ super sharp, and the zoom range of 20-70mm is more than enough for travel; the extra 20mm is especially useful during travel and you want to squeeze in more scenery. The F4 provides enough bokeh, but it might be a little harsh on some older cameras. Build quality is very good, all plastic but it helps on making the lens nimble. The design is so much inspired from the FE 24-70 GM2, specially with the placement of the lens badge, the button n switch, and also the aperture ring! One downside of the build quality is the filter ring made of plastic, but nonetheless the perfect companion for travel!

I really appreciate the smaller size and weight compared with the 24-70 f2.8GM. The extra 4mm on the wide end are a big plus and the f4 aperture has not been a hindrance at all. I love this lens!

This lens certainly lives up to my expectations, 20mm at the wide end is such a bonus on an all in one travel lens. This is a very versatile, very sharp, reasonably small, well designed, well made Sony "G" lens.

This is a sharp detailed lens, robust and well made, which is excellent. I have however only given 4 stars due to the excessive distortion wide open 20 - 24 mm

Have been using this lens a lot as I shoot a lot of Nature and Landscapes/cloudscapes/sunsets. One day next to a group of photographers, one turned the wrong way and knocked over my tripod+camera. I and everyone else thought the camera AND lens were goners BUT later when I got home, inspected well the damage. Camera okay. Lens okay. Seems camera hit lens first on cement pavement. The filter took the blunt of the impact and crushed filter glass + filter on that one impact point. Couldn't get the filter off at all as it was well-dented [see pixs], so removed the rest of the splintered glass and tested the lens for two days. NO problems, focuses well. Just wish it was not a manual aperture ring. Thanks for such a tough lens!!

Sony's 20-70mm f/4 G zoom is a brilliant lens. I use it for landscape, nature, and some street photography. But the range really shines in landscapes. Focus has been excellent and responsive. The results are sharp and contrasty. I love the included aperture ring. I mostly shoot manual lenses so this feature was welcomed. Very good addition from Sony.

Sony's versatile landscape zoom lens! This small G series lens delivers! it's sharp, quick to focus, and reasonable light. The images off my A7R3a are very satisfactory across its range. The included accessories of this kit was an added bonus of some useful products too. Making it a nicer value than the lens alone for the same price.

I purchased this lens for my broadcast work and am pairing it up with an FX6. Having the extra 20mm is really great for filming observationally. It's far more dynamic than the 24-70GM II. Also the 20-70 is virtually parfocal which is essential for my work. The 24-70GM II is not parfocal which is the reason I would never buy it. Also, the 20-70mm is super light and the image quality is fantastic. So, I don't regret moving away from the heavy Cine Zooms I've been using for years. One thought! I'd happily accept a little extra weight for a F2.8 version of the 20-70mm as long as it remains parfocal. And internal zooming would be a lot more reassuring. Another related point for Sony to consider, being able to allocate Clear Image Zoom to an Assignable button on the FX6, (you can't currently do this), would be incredibly useful in terms of being able to quickly extend the range of this lens at the tight end when you need that little extra bit of reach. It should be easy to add this to the upcoming FX6 update...and why not make the FF/S35 menu option assignable too!? Not being able to allocate these two features to Assignable Buttons really slows down my shooting work flow.

Really like this new lens. I take a lot of landscape photos and find the new 20 to 70mm zoom range excellent. Photo quality is gorgeous and the lens quality excellent and its feature rich. This lens replaced my 24-105mm. The 20mm vs 24mm makes a big difference landscape wise & means less lens swapping for me. AlsoI very much appreciate the fact that the 20-70mm is much lighter and in my view takes better photos. I've owned this lens now for over 2 months and so far I'm extremely happy with it.

This lens is extremely sharp, even at f4 it's got great sharpness across the frame. Having 20mm at the short end is extremely useful for a lens like this and much better than the more common 24mm. In an ideal world I would have loved it to be 16mm but appreciate this would make the lens much bigger and heavier, and no doubt affect the image quality. I love that Sony have started adding aperture rings to their newer lenses, I much prefer this than using the control dial. The build quality doesn't feel particularly premium, and doesn't feel as premium as the Zeiss 24-70mm f4 that this lens has replaced, but it's solid enough and I'm sure this just all helps keep the weight down. The zoom does extend more than I was anticipating. This lens has pretty bad distortion when uncorrected, but in the real world this is a non-issue as raw software has lens corrections and it doesn't affect the end image quality. If you're a jpeg shooter the camera has lens corrections (if enabled). The biggest issue I have with this lens is the price, £1299 GBP is way too much for this type of lens imo. It is a great lens that will be great for travel, however that price is hard to swallow.

I'm new to Sony mirrorless cameras and jumped in the deep end with an A7RV. This lens was chosen for its relative compactness and suitability for travel and landscape photography. So far I'm impressed with how sharp are the images, which therefore allows me to crop from the 60 MP sensor. I've tried a few night shots (on a tripod) and been pleasantly impressed. And lastly the 20mm wide end does give me some great landscapes.

I replaced my excellent FE 24-105mm G lens with this new 20-70mm lens as its range is more in keeping for my use in travel, landscape, children, reportage and ad hoc portraiture photography after reading reviews and trying one in my local store. It's Image Quality is fantastic and being more compact and lighter than my 24-105 will be more useful and thus stay attached to my A7iii most of the time. Well done Sony, you have produced a real gem of a lens with this one.

After using the lens I've found it very sharp from F4 all the way to F11. this is perfect for what I bought it for, Landscape & Travel. The lens is very light and small making it perfect for both those types of photography. If you don't mind the high price it is well worth the investment. It's another G lens with GM quality at half the price! look at it this way and you will be happy. This one's a keeper for me.

I need a light travel lens to compliment my tank of a lens, the Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8 DI III VXD. This new Sony 20-70 worked out great for travel photography and video work. It has all the features & build quality of my GM primes like my 14, 24, and 35. It has great IQ and is fun to use with my Sony A7IV. I sold my Tamron 20-40 f/2.8 DI III VXD due to less than stellar focus and IQ especially for video work.

Sharp at every aperture and focal length
By Dorset L.
Two weeks in and I am yet to find any real annoyances with this lens. So far it is the best every day travel / landscape zoom I have found. Ok the bokeh is not lovely, but at 70mm f4 it is acceptable for most everyday use. Combined with an A7c this is the most versatile lightweight solution out there. Well done Sony.
This zoom range makes the lens an optimal choice for a wide range of movie and still subjects. The 20mm end allows for a wide angle of view when shooting movies with a 16:9 or 2.35:1 aspect ratio that reduces field of view. You’ll also have a minimum focus distance of 11.8" to 9.8" when using AF, and 9.8"throughout the zoom range when focusing manually. The lens’ maximum magnification is 0.39x for detailed close-ups.
G Lens Image Quality.
The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens has two AA elements, one aspherical element, three ED glass elements, and one ED aspherical element. This allows for high optical performance that corrects both chromatic and spherical aberration.
The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens is a great lightweight option for photographers on the go. It features an updated dust and moisture resistant design for extra reliability when outdoors. This includes silicon seals around buttons and rubber gasket around the lens mount. The front lens element also features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants.
The lens’ two XD linear motors provide smooth and fast focus drive with high AF speed. Moving subjects — like wildlife and sports photography — are reliably tracked when shooting continuous stills at up to 30 fps, or up to 4K 120p, with cameras such as the Sony Alpha 1.
The F4 maximum aperture remains consistent with any focal length. Therefore, there is no need to use extreme ISO settings at the telephoto end of the range, and high shutter speeds can be used as needed to achieve the desired effect.
There are an aperture ring click stops that can be turned on and off. There is also an iris lock switch that prevents the aperture ring from being accidentally moved between settings. You’ll also find two customizable focus hold buttons and alternative functions can be assigned from your camera's menu.
The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens has a linear response MF to ensure the focus ring responds correctly to subtle control when focusing manually. This also works effectively with the AF Assist function in cameras, such as the ±7 IV and FX6. You can easily switch between manual and auto focus with the AF/MF switch on the lens’ side.
Under the umbrella of Sony's innovative lens technology, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E stands out as a high-quality, advanced, and reliable choice for both professional and amateur photographers. This lens offers a versatile ultra-wide 20mm to mid-telephoto 70mm zoom range, making it an ideal choice for capturing a wide array of subjects in both still and movie formats.
The lens's superior G Lens image quality ensures corner-to-corner high resolution across all focal lengths. This is achieved through the lens's state-of-the-art design, which includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, one aspherical element, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, and one ED aspherical element. These components work together to correct both chromatic and spherical aberration, ensuring high optical performance from the ultra-wide 20mm to the 70mm range.
The FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E also boasts peak AF performance, thanks to two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors. These motors facilitate precise, fast, and quiet focus drive, enhancing AF speed by up to 60% and improving performance while tracking by up to two times. This ensures reliable and precise tracking of moving subjects, whether you're shooting continuous stills at up to 30 fps or capturing 4K 120p footage with alpha compatible cameras.
The lens's advanced technology also minimizes focus breathing and focus/axial shift while zooming, reducing distracting image shifts for refined movie imagery. The XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture unit work together to dramatically reduce noise and vibration when shooting movies, further enhancing the lens's performance.
Despite its advanced features, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E maintains a compact, lightweight design. This makes it an excellent choice for photographers seeking superb image quality and versatility in any situation, from ultra-wide to short telephoto shots. The lens's close-up performance is also noteworthy, with a minimum focus distance of 11.8" (30 cm - wide) to 9.8" (25 cm - telephoto) when using AF, and 9.8" (25 cm) throughout the zoom range when focusing manually.
The lens also features a constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range, offering greater flexibility in choosing apertures at any focal length. This is complemented by a 9-blade circular aperture and optimally tuned spherical aberration, which enhance the deep, soft bokeh effect achievable with full-frame image sensors.
The FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E also supports Active Mode image stabilization in ± series cameras, particularly effective at the ultra-wide 20mm end of the zoom range. This feature provides excellent image stabilization performance while maintaining a wide angle of view, making it especially useful for shooting smooth, stable handheld footage while walking.
Additional features include a dedicated aperture ring, click/de-click and iris lock switches for direct, rapid control, customizable focus hold buttons, and an instant auto/manual focus selection switch. The lens also boasts a fluorine coating on the front lens element for repelling water, oil, and other contaminants, and a dust and moisture resistant design for reliability in challenging conditions. The lens accepts standard 72mm screw-on filters for expanded creative freedom, and comes with a petal-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood.
In summary, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E is a durable, versatile, and high-performing lens that offers advanced features and superior image quality, making it a valuable addition to any photographer's gear.
