Very good

Purchase use. Very good from F/2.2. Front focus 1.4-2.0. After 2.2 have litle back focus. From f4 focus is perfect. Work very well in life view with Canon 60D. Mutch better than Canon 50/1.8.Very happy.

Sweet Prime!

This is a really nice lens. Quick, quiet, nice bokeh. Low light performance is excellent. Feels tough and heavily built. Highly recommended.

Superb Bokeh, Questionable AF Accurace.

This is a fantastic lens for portraiture or any situation where an incredibly smooth out of focus background is necessary. I've never seen a lens with better bokeh. Unfortunately however, the AF on this lens is horrible. I tried three different copies hoping to get one with accurate AF and they all failed to varying degrees. For subjects that were close up it front focused a great deal, and subjects that were further away it would back focus by a large margin.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4

This is the first prime 50mm that I purchase for my personal and professional gear. I just used this on a photo shoot for the first time professionally since I got it. I loved it! A great portrait lens for tight spaces. I shot in a small sound studio no bigger than a standard living room. This lens let me get the images I need for this session. Amazing quality! My only reason for with holding a star and giving it four stars is that it was a bit slow to auto-focus in low light at anything other than wide open and even slower with movement in low light. But once it got it, it got it! Overall an amazing piece of glass!

Amazingly smooth bokeh, sharp, poor AF.

I love everything about this lens aside from it's AF. If my subject is close to the camera, the AF front focuses. If the subject is further away, it back focuses. Unfortunately the AF is very unreliable at f/1.4, but aside from that, this lens is PERFECT. The bokeh is so absurdly smooth and nice looking, and the lens is sufficiently sharp.

Front Focus Issue

I own the Sigma 30mm 1.4 (used with my Canon 60D) and love it. I just recently bought a 5DMIII so I needed a prime that would fit a full frame body. The 50mm 1.4's build quality is superb. This lens is incredibly sharp at 2.5 and above. I am having front focus issues with this lens at 1.4 - 2.2 (have to microadjust to +20 for it to properly focus) so I'm in the process of returning and getting a 2nd copy. I am hoping the 2nd copy works out because I want to love this lens!

Good lens

I use this on a Canon 70D and it replaces an inexpensive (plastic) Canon f/1.8 that I never used. Didn't anticipate this great a difference and so far I'm very pleased. I anticipate using mainly for portraits and night shots, anywhere light is low or when I want to blur fore and aft. I'd read that AF was slow, I'm not seeing that.

This 50 is MORE than NIFTY.

The clarity, smoothness & speed of this little gem is impressive. I mostly picked it up as an interview lens for video, but it's becoming my go to glass along w/my 85mm 1.8 for street shooting & candids. I'm very pleased with Sigma, this being my 3rd lens of theirs.

I would buy this lens again

This was my first non canon lens I bought, and I did not want to buy it, but comparing prices between Sigma 1.4 and Canon 1.2, I decided to get it, and I could not have made a better purchase, the lens is great, in love with it

Good lens

Construction is good. Slight auto focus trouble wide open in low light, DOF very shallow full open. Good focus at 2.0 or smaller apatures. Good buy for the price.

Just OK Not great

The build quality was good, I like the pinch lens cover. The image quality is not great. Bokeh is better than the Canon midrange 50mm but image quality was sleightly better with the Canon a hundred bucks cheaper. Cant beat Adoramas return policy, and customer service.

Get one in your bag

This lens performs exceptionally and is a great value. Auto focus is smooth and fast and bokeh is creamy allowing you to create nice separation between your subject and background. At 77mm in diameter, the glass is big - so on the heavier side - but lets in a lot of light. I'd certainly recommend it to a friend and will be buying another Sigma prime.

Great lens and uses the 77mm filter size that my Nikon lenses use. I can't say anything bad about it.

Good in General

I have a 5D 3. I used this lens for street photography and portraits. My only concern is the inconsistence of AF, especially when shooting with 1.4, thats when I start to use manual override. The speed of AF at 1.4 is slow too, though at smaller apertures it is pretty fast. Sometimes color aberration occurs. But the good thing about it is how light weight and compact the lens is, and once if you nail the focus, the image is amazingly sharp! The build quality is fantastic, looks perfect on the huge 5D body.

Tack Sharp at 1.8

Used for event photography in quinceaneras, wedding and business events. Great control of depth of field, pleasing bokeh and reliable sharpness at 1.8 for still subjects. Great price/performance ratio.

A good lens for portrait photography.

Though I had a bit confusion before purchasing this lens for my Canon 60D, however I opted for this lens for its Strong Construction and wide aperture. It would may give some unexpected result if anybody use it with multi-focus point. The best performance I have found setting "One Shot" and single focus point in my camera. I don't have experience with the Canon 50mm 1.4, but I am happy with this lens.

Great Lens - Poor AF

I love everything about this lens except the focus. The build quality is great. I love the size and weight of the lens on my Canon 7D. The Bokeh is very smooth. But, the deal killer is inconsistent focus....even manual focus. The micro focus adjustment helped calibrate the lens to my camera but it still didn't fix the issue. I can take several shots in a row never moving the camera and most will be blurry or slightly to severely out of focus. The ones that are sharp look great. I want to keep this lens but will probably send it back as it is useless if I can't get my pictures in focus. This is my second copy of this lens. I'm going to switch to the Canon only because of focus issues.

Fantastic clarity - razor sharp

I use this lens for portraits and weddings. I ADORE it. It hardly ever leaves my camera. I couldn't have made a better purchase! I read many reviews for the canon version of this lens, and went with the Sigma because reviews all indicated that the Sigma performed as well as the canon 1.2 - i truly think so! Bokeh is amazing, clarity is razor sharp.

Reputable Products

Sigma products are not a stranger to me, as I have owned its 20mm and 13mm lens. This Sigma 50/1.4 is another addition. I am, thus far, happy with its construction quality. As I have opportunities to compare my Canon 100/2.8 L series with the Sigma 50/1.4 in a low light condition (I realize that it is not a one-to-one comparison), the Sigma 50/1.4 is quite impressive and delivers a much faster focus. However, Canon provides a bit more refine bokeh and snappier color. Only when use this lens at apertures larger than 2.0 (i.e., from f1.8 to f1.4), the results are inconsistent (Pic. Candle @f1.4). Also, at these apertures, the lens continuously hunts for focus. A resetting on camera (I use Canon 5D MkII and 7D) from "Al Servo" mode to "Al Focus" mode helps minimize this problem (but not eliminate) at low light conditions. Overall, it is a very good product and is increasingly replacing my Canon 100/2.8 L series because of its utility and quality at a more affortable price. Here is a sample picture (Pic. Kikie @f2.8).

Awesome Piece of Glass

I had my eye on this lens for a while. Since my 50 mm by Nikon was broken and I needed a replacement, I went ahead an purchased the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Weight is not an issue because I shoot with heavier lens in my work. This lens has been bullet proof, and the lens coatings are second to none! The only disadvantage is I have to spend a little more money for filters because of the larger diameter lens (77mm), but since it uses the same filters as my 70-200 lens it's not been much of an issue.

Poor focus quality

Had to return 2 copies due to inconsistent focus. Even with MA on a 5d3 could not get it to produce consistent results.

FEATURED REVIEWS

I love this lens!

By Logicus

About a month ago, I uncrossed my legs while sitting at the kitchen table and my foot caught the end of the strap on my 450d. It didn't fall to the floor, it was catapulted to the floor, and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II that was on the camera ultimately saved the camera, sacrificing its own life (it was a good little lens).I started researching all the 50mm's out there and the consistently highest rated one was this beauty. I read that even if you got one with the aforementioned front focus or bac...

Worth The Extra Cost

By Nellisoft

Let me start out by saying that this lens was designed to be shot wide-open (whereas the older designs from the other manufacturers were not), and it shows. I get reasonably sharp results all the way open at 1.4, even on a crop sensor body, and it just gets better stopping down. Bokeh is incredibly smooth thanks to the 9 rounded diaphragm blades; no noticeable chromatic aberration. Autofocus is fast and silent, but it does have a tendency to make a second adjustment and occasionally mis-focus...

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens is a large aperture prime lens with a standard focal length of 50mm, ideal for Nikon F digital SLR cameras. This lens has superior peripheral brightness even at the maximum aperture and corrects a possible sagittal coma flare.

This lens is perfectly suited for a wide range of subjects enabling outstanding, sharply defined images against a nicely blurred background. The fast, F1.4 aperture makes this lens desirable for use with Digital SLR cameras.

This lens effectively becomes an 80mm medium telephoto lens on digital cameras with APS-C size image sensors. The optimum optical design and molded glass aspherical lens element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations.

The super multi-layer lens coating reduces fare and ghosting. Superior optical performance is also ensured throughout the focusing range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7") and has maximum magnification of 1:7.4.

It creates a very attractive blur, even when a small aperture is used. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override.
