Review Summary

After switching to Sony, I needed a way to use my Canon lenses. I had to choose between a regular adapter or the speed booster. Since the Sony A6500 is a crop sensor camera and my Canon lenses were mainly full frame, it was an easy choice. The auto focus works well and is fast enough for my uses. The pictures are clear and I like the extra light through the lens. The build is sturdy and everything fits together snug. My plan is to add native Sony lenses to my bag but it's nice to know that if I come across a great deal on a good Canon lens that I can take advantage of it. I recommend it. 4 stars instead of 5 only because it's pricey. Side note, the service through Adorama was great!

This is my second copy. I really wish each version didn't have quirks. One has to be turned on just right, another has aperture issues. The fact that I love that I get an extra stop of light out of my lenses allows me to put up with the quirks.

Adorama always has what I need for any given project. I bought the Sony FS5 but have a TON of Canon glass. Without hesitation Lewis shared his knowledge of the Metabones Speedbooster, its performance and how it works with recent Sony cameras. Excellent performance AND one stop of light for all those low light nuts like me!

I purchased the Metabones Canon EF/ Micro 4/3 Speed Booster XL-BL in April of 2016. My application was to use the Panasonic GH-4 and the Speed Booster with the many Canon lenses I had accumulated. Initially the unit worked well most of the time, but the GH-4 would occasionally show the “Lens attachment failed” error screen when I attached a different lens. I thought it was the lens choice, but noticed that all but one of the lenses I had were original Canon EF lens. On 09/29/2016 the GH-4 firmware was updated to version V25 and the Speed Booster interface problem began to occur much more frequently. I continued to think it may have been due to my inexperience with the GH-4 camera functions, so I tried to learn about and attempt almost every combination of camera and lens settings. Nothing worked. On 12/07/2016 the Speed Booster firmware was updated to version V2.5, and on 12/08/2016 the GH-4 firmware was again updated to version V26. Now EVERY lens I try to attach gives the same attachment failure error message. I can only use the combination if I place the lens inside the Speed Booster mount but only turn enough to secure it without actually connecting the contacts of the lens and the Speed Booster. Of course this won’t allow any lens communication with the camera, but will still allow the use of the lens as a completely manual unit. I have tried both the Green Power-Save mode (default) and the Advanced Manual Focus mode on the Speed Booster and I still get the same results. I find it almost unbearable that I purchased this unit mainly for the ability to use my Canon lenses on the GH-4 like I use them on my Canon bodies, i.e. with full control of the lens focus functions. I can’t believe a ($) unit designed to do this, heralded as the best unit of its type available in the marketplace, only lasted for a few months before failing completely. Of course I am beyond the 30 day period usually given for a return window. Surprisingly, Metabones has refused to respond to any of my requests for a warranty claim. They won't even acknowledge receipt of my emails. I could never give this unit more than one star, and would seriously love to give it much less than one star, if that were possible. I have never been as disappointed with a seemingly serious photography product as I have been with this Metabones unit.

I got this for my FS5 to extend its somewhat disappointing low light abilities. It does a nice job of that and also gives me the equivalent focal lengths I'm used to from full frame SLRs. I use manual lenses, so any awkward focus/aperture control doesn't matter much to me. All around a very nice product (unless you need extra reach on the telephoto end, in which case go with the standard IV adapter.)

Works great with all my Canon and Sigma EF mount lenses. Get a ?6300 and this to get a 4K, full frame camera look for less than an original ?7.

Speed Booster ULTRA for E-Mount and X-Mount cameras
Sharper corners, less distortion, reduced vignetting
New optical design: advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tanatalum-based optical glass to achieve extraordinary optical performance with improved corner sharpness, distortion and reduced vignetting.
Like the revolutionary original Metabones Speed Booster announced in January 2013, the Speed Booster ULTRA has a magnification of 0.71x and so it effectively reduces the crop factor of mirrorless cameras with DX-sized sensors, such as Sony E-mount and Fuji X-Mount cameras, from 1.5x to 1.07x. However, the new ULTRA design makes very effective use of exotic materials at the furthest limit of glassmaking technology and as a result is well corrected for use with virtually all fullframe SLR lenses regardless of exit pupil distance.
Thus, the Speed Booster ULTRA performs extremely well with professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses such as the 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms by Canon and Nikon to produce 17-50mm f/2.0 and 50-142mm f/2.0 high-speed zooms, respectively. Similarly, high-speed fixed focal length lenses such as a 50mm f/1.2 will be transformed into a 35.5mm f/0.9 lens with excellent contrast and resolution from the center all the way to the edges of the image. Autofocus
Autofocus is supported, with the following known limitations.
Autofocus speed is very slow and inadequate for most moving subjects. The autofocus speed is unfit for professional use for sure and it would disappoint most enthusiasts
Only Canon-branded lenses introduced in or after 2006 are officially supported. Autofocus is disabled for older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, including most Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses and all Contax N lenses modified by Conurus.
On FS series (e.g. FS7, FS700, FS100), autofocus may be available only in photo mode but not in movie capture mode.
Continuous AF is not supported.
DMF mode (direct manual focus) is not supported.
For non-camcorder camera bodies (e.g. NEX-7), during movie capture, if the subject moves to a different distance, half-press the shutter release button to re-activate autofocus and lock onto the subject again. Since autofocus speed is slow, there may be visible disruption in the resulting footage.
The first two autofocus attempts are used to calibrate the lens and as a result may not lock successfully on the target. Half-press the shutter release button again and autofocus will lock successfully.
Autofocus may have difficultly locking onto subjects which are very close to the nearest focusing distance of the lens.
Autofocus accuracy depends heavily on the working condition of the lens. Lenses with hidden problems which may not be apparent on Canon DSLRs will lead to inaccurate and unreliable autofocus on Sony NEX. Typical problems of this kind that they have seen include an unsmooth/erratic autofocus mechanism (e.g. getting stuck intermittently at a certain focusing distance), a worn-out gear train with out-of-spec backlash, a faulty/worn-out distance encoder or other faulty/worn-out internal sensors.

List of manual focus lenses which Require Modification to be used on Speed Booster ULTRA
Many manual focus lenses have rear protrusions (spikes, levers, other appendages) which would damage the optics and/or housing of Speed Booster ULTRA. They need to be modified before they can be safely used on Speed Booster ULTRA. Check and make sure there are no rear protrusions from the adapter/lens combination before using on Speed Booster ULTRA. Scratches and damages caused by rear protrusions or by poor quality adapters are not covered by warranty.
Why Metabones
Since its inception, Metabones has been designing and manufacturing lens adapters recognized among professionals and enthusiasts as leaders in design and workmanship. Contrary to the popular trend of other factories using an aluminum ring painted black on the camera-body-side, they instead take no short-cut but use precision-machined brass with chromium plating on both the camera-body and the lens sides of their adapters, in order to ensure smooth mounting, great appearance and durability. The lens side of the adapter features a strong leaf-spring structure, strengthening the adapter-lens connection and ensuring tightness of the lens in order to reduce wear and prevent focus errors and optical alignment issues from appearing.
Metabones uses matte-black treatment to keep internal reflection to a minimum in order to maintain the maximum optical quality possible with the lens. All Metabones Adapters follow this tradition of uncompromising precision, robust build quality and outstanding finish. Metabones new Smart Adapter series of products add industry-leading electronic interfacing technology from Canada, with true electronic control of the lens' aperture directly from the camera body.
Both camera-side and lens-side of the adapter are made of brass, precision-machined and plated with chromium.
Satin surface finish - just like your OEM lens and camera mounts.
Precise fit and solid connection - lens has no play, gap or wiggling when mounted on adapter and no adjustments are required to fit your lens.
Designed to reach infinity focus while maintaining the correct registration distance required t
