The CA401 debuted in 2023 with the same Grand Feel Compact wooden key action and few differences of importance, much less that justify paying double the price of an open box CA49 with full warranty. It arrived in perfect condition other than ten keys that became misaligned during shipping, which was straightforward to correct. It looks, feels, and sounds beautiful!

Recently ordered this CA49 in white, and it was delivered in pristine condition. Assembly was a snap, and the digital piano itself is a delight to play. I'd take it over any number of uprights I've played in the past. The touch and action are great, the tone is expressive, and I really enjoy playing it. We went with the CA49 because of the discounts being offered, and the updated model (CA401) has an identical action. I was a little hesitant to get it in white, but looking at it in my room, it fits right in. It's a compact instrument, so Liberace vibes are minimal. Can, without hesitation, strongly recommend this instrument.

I'm thrilled with my recent purchase of the CA49. It fits perfectly in the location I chose, and the action is one of the most realistic I've felt on a digital piano. Depending on placement of the instrument, the sounds can come across as thin or boomy, but once your ears adjust, they're fine sounding (quality-wise). I usually play a real piano, but often have to work on digitals and this is one of the best I've had the opportunity to work on.

My wife had her eyes on more expensive Yamaha digital and hybrid pianos for a while. Came across this Kawai model and was pleased with the feel, very similar to a real mechanical piano, at a decent price. Unpacking it, I was super impressed by the quality. I've assembled a lot of Ikea furniturem, and expected this to be similar, but the fit and finish and packaging is a step above. 100% satisfied with the purchase and Kawai as a company.

The action of wooden keys is very close to the feeling of a real piano. Also the white color looks elegant.

The Kawai CA49 sounds great, feels great, and looks great! My only complaints are that the organ voices don't sustain fully with the pedal (they drop off like a piano), and that I wish it had at least a few more voices. You can tell it's focused on its pianos. I'll have to play around with some VSTs I guess, no big deal. The PianoRemote app works well on my Android phone, and makes it much easier to change settings and find the songs to play along with. Delivery was good. It took almost two weeks, but was handled well and arrived via scheduled delivery without blemish.

BREAKDOWN: DELIVERY: 3.5 / 5 The box had some gnarly gashes and several of the structural foam pieces were cracked. This indicates some pretty severe abusing from the point the piano left the factory, arrived at the warehouse, then delivered to my home. Something needs to improve. The delivery service had the item in a huge Ryder truck with a few other deliveries along with it. They also used a pallet jack with wheels to get it out of the truck. The box wasn't in good shape when I saw it inside the truck. PIANO KEY ACTION: 5 / 5 There are many YT videos that praise Kawai's Grand Feel Compact (GFC) key action, this is why I bought this Kawai CA49. It's actually an improvement over the Grand Feel II (GF2) action. GF2 and every action older than it uses a teflon pad on the key stick mechanism. Over time, the teflon pad wears down and causes "key sticking". In GFC and GF3, the teflon pad has been replaced with a full knuckle cover end cap. This new design has been out for 2yrs and so far so good. This is how I would rank Kawai's piano key actions: Grand Feel III > Grand Feel Compact > Grand Feel II > Grand Feel I PIANO ENGINE: 4 / 5 The piano engine is good but not as good as the CA59. SPEAKERS: 4 /5 The 4 onboard speakers + 20 x 2 watt amp sounds great for a digital piano. However, all digital pianos lack low key representation. The lowest key on a piano is 27.5 Hz. Digital piano makers never list speaker specs, which is terrible. So, in order to get full sound, every digital piano should have at lest a 10" subwoofer. MOBILE APP: 2 / 5 Kawai has the weakest mobile app support out of all the big names. If this is important to you, buy Yamaha. They have THE BEST mobile app support for all of their models. They do support Android at least. LOOKS & BUILD QUALITY: 4 / 5 Kawai is no different than anyone else. Everyone uses MDF for their furniture cabinets and wood screws. This path works but doesn't scream long lasting furniture quality. Expect maybe 5 years of use if you take good care of it. If you have to move it, proceed with caution and treat it like a glass vase. I would not recommend taking it apart as with wood screws, once they are in, they are not as secure if you unscrew them out and screw them back in. The surface is a nice veneer finish like every digital piano maker has. BENCH: 5 / 5 I think with the two higher end CA models, you get an adjustable bench. I think with the CA49 and CA59, you get a standard single person bench. It's very solid, full metal frame for the seat and metal legs. It's worth $75 on its own. It does have storage built-in. OVERALL: 4 / 5 The Kawai C49 has a few shortcomings for a digital piano in this price range. However, the piano key action is top notch for this price point which is why I bought it. I hope Kawai improves their app support like Yamaha.

This instrument is incredible. It has a wonderful set of sounds, all of them of very high quality, and the keys feel so authentic. Something worth mentioning is that if you are using headphones with a high resistance (mine are 250 ohms) that it isn’t necessary to use an amplifier. It is plenty audible without one. Assembly is best done with two people. I managed to get it put together by myself, but living the actual keyboard itself was a little risky since that’s where most of the weight is.

As the successor to the popular CA48 piano, the Kawai CA49 Digital Piano continues a legacy of authentic sound and premium features. The Kawai CA49 Digital Piano incorporates technologies developed in collaboration with premium audio equipment manufacturer, Onkyo, and features a new motherboard and amplification system designed to deliver richer, higher quality sound.
This updated model also preserves the core Grand Feel Compact wooden-key keyboard action and acoustic piano sound of Shigeru Kawai SK-EX and Kawai EX Concert Grand Pianos, providing a more natural and realistic playing experience. The new Low Volume Balance function improves consistency when practicing at reduced volume levels.
The CA49 possesses an updated cabinet design, adopting the taller body and rounded edge details of the larger Concert Artist models, for a more impressive, premium experience. It also boasts an improved cheekblock control panel that includes a modern OLED graphic display for easy operation.
The Kawai Concert Artist (CA) Series is one of the most award-winning lines of digital pianos available today, and the Kawai CA49 Digital Piano is a model that will deliver players of all levels a premium piano experience.
Touch
The CA49 digital piano utilizes Kawai's Grand Feel Compact keyboard action, which draws upon 90 years of acoustic piano craftsmanship to provide an exceptionally realistic playing experience. All 88 black and white keys are crafted entirely from long pieces of wood, with finely textured Ivory Touch key surfaces applied to assist playing control.
As with an acoustic grand piano action, the keys rest on a metal balance pin and move with a smooth seesaw-like motion, while the extended pivot length ensures a consistent, evenly-balanced touch weight - even when playing towards the back of the key.
The Grand Feel Compact action also incorporates grade-weighted hammers, bass region counterweights, and let-off simulation for added authenticity, while its accurate triple-sensor key detection system allows rapidly repeated notes such as trills to be performed smoothly, without unnatural breaks in sound.
Tone
The CA49 digital piano captures the magnificent tone of Kawai's flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano. Widely regarded as the "premier pianos of Japan", Shigeru Kawai instruments grace the stages of concert halls and musical institutions throughout the world, and are prized for their exceptional tonal clarity.
In addition, the CA49 also features the distinctive sound of Kawai's highly acclaimed EX concert grand piano, which has frequently been selected by professional pianists in such prestigious events as the Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Rubinstein international piano competitions, among others.
Both instruments have been carefully recorded, meticulously analysed, and faithfully reproduced with full 88-key sampling using Harmonic Imaging sound technology. This unique process accurately recreates the broad dynamic range of the original grand pianos, affording pianists an extraordinary level of expressiveness ranging from the softest pianissimo to the strongest, boldest fortissimo.
Bluetooth
In addition to standard MIDI jacks for connecting to other instruments, the CA49 digital piano also boasts integrated Bluetooth MIDI technology that allows the instrument to communicate with supported smart devices wirelessly.
Once connected to a phone, tablet, or laptop, CA49 digital piano owners can enjoy a wide variety of exciting music-related apps that enhance their learning and playing experience without additional cables.
Note: Availability of Bluetooth function dependent on market location.
Lessons and Exercises
The CA49 digital piano features a three song recorder, allowing performances to be recorded to internal memory and played back at the touch of a button.
In addition, the convenient lesson feature allows aspiring pianists to learn the piano using a built-in collection of etudes from Czerny and Burgmuller, or songs from the popular Alfred course books. The left and right hand parts for each piece can be practiced separately, while adjusting the tempo allows more difficult passages to be perfected.
Virtual Technician
An experienced piano technician is essential to fully realise the potential of a fine acoustic piano. In addition to meticulously tuning each note, the technician also performs numerous regulation and voicing adjustments that allow the instrument to truly sing.
The CA49 digital piano's Smart Mode Virtual Technician simulates these refinements digitally, with ten preset configurations that adjust various characteristics of the grand piano sound to match different musical styles.
Grand Feel Pedal System
When the damper pedal of an acoustic piano is pressed and released, it is often possible to hear the sound of the damper head touching and releasing the strings. The CA49 digital piano reproduces this sound with the Damper Noise setting allowing the volume of this sound to be adjusted. The speed at which the damper pedal is pressed will also influence the prominence of the damper noise, with fast pedalling creating a very pronounced sound.
Additional Sounds
Complementing the beautiful acoustic piano voices, the CA49 also features a modest selection of additional sounds, ranging from electric pianos and drawbar or church organs, to strings, human choirs, and synth pads, inviting musicians to add greater variety to their performances.
Concert Magic
This exclusive feature lets anyone enjoy the thrill of playing the piano, even if you've never played before. Concert Magic is a feature that allows any player to experience the thrill of playing real music by simply tapping any key.
Superior Headphone Experience
The CA49's Spatial Headphone Sound (SHS) technology enhances the depth and realism of the instrument's sound when listening through headphones or earphones. The player can select one of three different acoustic presets that adjust the spatial positioning of the sound, while also helping to reduce auditory fatigue when using earphones or headphones for extended periods of time.
