I purchased this lens approximately 18 months ago and I have been and still am very impressed with its performance, value and quality build. The auto-focus is typically Canon lightning fast and very accurate at all ranges. The Image Stabilization feature I believe is the best, bar none. The images are clear, sharp and the color rendition is better than I expected at this price point. Thanks for reading. Photonutjob. :)

Good zoom range, but had poor sharpness, especially at the long end. Could not get a sharp photo at 250mm, even with manual focus. Otherwise, autofocus is sufficiently quick. You do not get the immediate, anytime manual focus override like you do with STM or USM lenses. You'll need to disengage AF and go to full manual focus to do that. I'd suggest going with a better lens. Maybe I got a bit of a lemon, but I'd pass on this lens. If nothing else, at least get the STM version, if you want this lens.

I received this lens with my T5i camera along with the EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS STM. I hardly ever use the latter lens outdoors. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II to me is a standard lens for all around use outdoors. I am a nature photographer, especially birds. I added a 2x telephoto extender to the lens and it is very difficult to focus manually and still get good shots of birds in flight. However, without the extender, I have had great success with the auto focus and have not used a tripod yet. Hand held shots are easy and come out great. I have also used this lens to shoot wedding photos. Mine came out better than the professional photographers. Maybe because I knew what I was shooting. I highly recommend this lens. It is one that should be in everyone's bag. The price is right and this is a great lens.

Took a few shots with this on a dance recital, and was amazed by the focus and sharpness. Was thinking of upgrading the 18-55 and 55-250 combo to 18-135 and selling the combo after. Now have to rethink if I want to let this one go.

This lens can capture amazing detail at a distance. I love it. I really like how I can get a beautiful, soft blurred background and yet have every last fine detail of my subject stand out. For example, at the zoo, I was able to get beautiful images of animals where you can see all the fine details of their feathers or fur, making you want to reach out and touch the photo. The image stabilization feature really helps a lot. I can capture very sharp photos of fast-moving objects, even while zoomed all the way in and handholding the camera. It has been fun to take pictures of faraway objects and look at them later, to discover details that I couldn't see with the naked eye at the time. If you like to take photos of animals or fill the frame with distant details, this is a good lens.

I am a professional photographer, but I bought this lens for my wife. She has a Canon SL1. It's easy for her to use and has a good range. I wish it was a little faster for low light situations. If you plan to shoot indoor sports like basketball or volleyball, you will probabley need a faster lens. For the price, however, it's a good long lens for amateur shooters.

I bought this product refurbished (D grade), and so far it appears indistinguishable from a new product. It has a good zoom range, and has decent autofocus. I ended up purchasing this after considering the IS 70-300 mm lens. It seemed a better value, and I like being able to use manual focus when in autofocus mode.

I own this lens and use with T2i , i do mostly out door nature pix and find this lens light weight and good for close ups and short distances, i am not a professional so i dont know all the correct terms but the pictures are sharp and color is good, also the lens covers a lot of ranges so i leave it on my camera most of the time..so this is a good overall lens for everyday use ,

I have been using this lens as my prime lens for 2.5 years. I'm a biologist, and most of my pictures are of landscapes, with some macro work and people pictures included. The Canon EF-S 55-250 mm lens performs beautifully for landscapes and people; it also has good macro capability, and this is adequate for almost all situations. Of course, I would like the lens to give me longer telephoto and closer macro views, but one lens can't do everything. The only negative is that the lens is very heavy. Nevertheless, I hiked all over Arches and Canyonlands National Parks last summer with the lens on my Canon T2i around my neck, and I hardly noticed the weight because I was focused on the great pictures I was getting.

If you own a crop-sensor camera like any of the Digital Rebels or the Canon 50D/60D/70D or even the 7D then this is THE value telephoto zoom lens to get. Beside its intended use, Its ideal for travel due to its low weight, good zoom range, and low cost - even if you damaged/lost it, it won't be a big setback. Unless you're a professional, this lens is all you need. One of the best value lenses from Canon.

I have been using this lens for 6 months regularly. It was purchased as a refurb. Generally, it has functioned very well, mechanically. The focusing motor is good and I don't feel that it is noisy. I would use this lens much more often, except that for more distant subjects the focus is very poor at any aperture setting.

I have used this lens for distant (tens of kilometers mountain shots, as well as to get closer to wildlife that is relatively nearby (50 meters, or so). The quality of the build of the lens is good, and I have been satisfied with the autofocus and IS. However, I have been unhappy with the crispness of the focus of this lens - particularly for distant shots. For closer scenes, the focus is better, but still cannot be described as "crisp". I will "get by" with this lens until I can afford a better one.

This is a nice lens for the money - good focal length range, good IS and good sharpness. For general use and having fun it's great - it's small and light and gets the job done. For lots more money and weight you can have the 70-200 f4, but for the average normal photographer this one works fine.

I bought this refurbished and have used it for a performance in a theater and during an ultimate frisbee tournament. It is pretty fast and works well. I also really enjoy the great deal I got on the lens by getting it refurbished!

I have to say, that after having used this lens for some time now, that I have not had the quality results that others have had with this lens. The older version of this lens was better, in my opinion...disappointed.

I am just getting back in photography after several years. Was still using a Minolta 101 and still love it! Just got a Canon T3i with this lens and so far it's great. Have a lot to learn in the digital world.

I owned a previous Canon camera, but I had bought a non-Canon Telephoto Zoom Lens before. That lens was very good, but it does not compare with the quality of my new Canon lens.

*Lens is primarily used for landscape, portrait, and wildlife photography. *Quality of photos is nice - would probably be better used with a tripod, though. *It's a bit slow to focus sometimes. *It's a bit heavy as well, but I suppose that's to be expected with a lens of this size. *Fits nicely into the camera bag alongside my camera and 18-55mm lens. *Focus is a little bit blurry sometimes if you're not holding it perfectly still. I still favor my starter lens, but there's not much to complain about on this one. It's well-crafted, takes nice photos, and I think it's a pretty decent lens for the price. Would I recommend it? - Yes Would I buy it again? - I think I'd prefer something that would cover the zoom range of this one and my starter lens, but yes, I would.

I didn't know much about photography before I bouught my camera.. What's great about this lens, is that I can take great pictures that look professional! I love how I can take close up, non blurring pictures of my kids playing sports.

Great lens for photographing my kids sporting events! Love that I can isolate the action and them so the focus in the photo is my child and not EVERYTHING else in the frame.

Very happy
By Dtaf
I purchased the lens a few months back when my "photography style" shifted to one that would require a lens with more zoom. After looking at countless reviews and comparisons I decided I was going to just go and buy this lens. I was immediatly surprised at the overall build quality of the lens, and for this price, im very happy. If the lens in fact lacks image sharpness, it's something that I am yet to notice. It produces a very sharp image on my t3i. If you're considering this lens I say go ...

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers.
This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses) and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer.
In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range.
