I'm using this receiver in a 2.0 stereo setup. I was looking for a receiver that could be controlled with HDMI-CEC. Overall, I'm very pleased with this receiver. The receiver is connected to a 2016 Samsung TV (KS8000). The Samsung Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) has always been rather glitchy, but it works well with the Onkyo. The Samsung TV had some trouble defining the device, sometimes setting it up as "Receiver", or "AV Receiver", or "Hometheater". After several days, the TV seems to have settled on "Hometheater" and the CEC controls have been working solidly since. My receiver arrived with the latest firmware, version (R102-0100-0010-0000). There have been no further updates so far. My speakers are Focal Chorus 706 (6-1/2" mid-bass driver, 8 ohms nominal). Almost everything I watch and listen to is streamed through a Roku Ultra (model 4802X). I have the Roku audio set to "Passthrough" to let the receiver handle all of the audio processing. The Roku remote is set to "CEC" to control power on/off, volume, and mute. It all works very reliably. I did run into a couple of quirks in the setup process of the Onkyo. After defining my 2.0 setup (front speakers only, no subwoofer), I just wasn't hearing much bass even though the speakers were set for "Full Range". After a few days, I stumbled upon a "hidden" setting in the Crossover menu: When I hit the down button, a new option appeared for "LFP of LFE" (Low Pass Filter of Low Frequency Effects). This was set to "150Hz" for the subwoofer. I can't understand why this would be active when there was no subwoofer in my setup, but I turned the filter off and "Voila!" I was finally getting the full range of audio to the front speakers. And it turns out to be a surprisingly good-sounding receiver. After performing the Accutune Room Correction, the receiver has a neutral sound with a satisfying amount of weight to it. Music streamed through Spotify sounds rich and detailed. Movies soundtracks are more than satisfying for me. When the audio mode is set to Dolby 2.0 (as opposed to Stereo), the receiver will synthesize the surround sound effects into the front speakers for a larger presentation. I was also surprised to see support for 4-ohm speakers and a selectable filter for the internal DAC. I didn't expect to see these options on an entry-level receiver. All in all, an impressive value, especially when on sale.

My Onkyo TX-NR414 just died after 12 years. Because of the well-known HDMI board issues, I tried to avoid Onkyo and bought Denon AVR-S660H. The Denon worked great except for ARC. When I turned on TV, which in turn powered on the receiver, ARC worked only half of times. For the other half of times, the receiver couldn't generate any sound unless I powered cycle the receiver. I did a lot of research on the internet and tried many different suggestions but still couldn't get it work 100%. In the end I returned the Denon and bought Onkyo TX-SR3100. Onky0 TX-SR3100 is a "simple" receiver but it really satisfies all my needs. Its ARC works flawlessly with my 12-year-old Panasonic TV. It drives my speakers in 3.1.2 layout well and produces beautiful sound. It supports newer features like HDMI 2.1 and Dolby Atmos, which could be useful if I bought a new TV. I don't need a 7 or 9 channel receiver because I have no intention to put so many speakers in my living room. I don't need internet or wifi functions either because I have various streaming devices providing all kinds of services. The only useful feature it misses is the Bluetooth transmitter function so I can pair a bluetooth headphone with the receiver. However this is easily fixed by connecting a Bluetooth transmitter to Zone B of the receiver, as suggested in the user's manual. All in all, I'm very happy with the receiver and can't find a reason to buy a more expensive receiver. Having said that, I don't know if Onkyo fixed the HDMI board issue that plagued many receivers years ago. I'll have to wait and see how long it can last.

Best entry level new AVR. Many features, so I will not reiterate the information about the AVR that is listed here. The Onkyo TX-SR3100 80W 5.2-Channel AV Receiver was reviewed by Andrew Robinson, YouTube. Andrew tested the Onkyo TX-SR3100 80W 5.2-Channel AV Receiver with high end speakers and reported this little gem had no issues driving them clearly, and delivered 90 to 100 db volume levels. Those who don't know Andrew, he is a Home Theater products, speakers and AVR consultant with decades of experience and has worked for many big brand names. On sale, the Onkyo TX-SR3100 80W 5.2-Channel AV Receiver, it's a steal, compared to other entry AVR brand offers currently. For me, I just finished all the connections to the Magnat Signature Supreme 2002, 4.1 package that was sold here recently. If it fails me, I will be back to say so, but I highly doubt that will happen. If the Onkyo TX-SR3100 80W 5.2-Channel AV Receiver excels and has no problem driving the 4-8 ohm rated speakers for a sustained period of time to see if it it clips, I will be back to say so. Tip, update the firmware asap during initial set up to solve an HDMI issue. You will need a blank thumb drive.
