It's stable enough. My small complaint is that there is not enough distance between the foot and the lens to aid in carrying by the foot alone.

I use this with a sling mount. My complaint is that it does not hold the lens in position very well. Every time I pick the lens up I have to adjust the mount because the screw has worked loose. It WILL NOT HOLD TIGHT!

While somewhat pricey this collar fits as advertised on the 300mm F4 PF lens. Although the light weight of the lens allows for hand holding, I bought the collar for those occasions when I want to stay focused on an object, such as an eagles nest.

You don't need it for this lens

This mates perfectly with my lens. It's best to mount a long lens at the balance point and reduce strain on the lens mount.

Tripod collar ring is a must have. Just attach to monopod or tripod, unscrew knob, rotate camera to vertical or horizontal position, tighten knob, you are there! The camera stays centered over tripod versus swinging out in midair without collar.

Asking this much money for what is little more than a simple piece of metal cannot be justified. Nikon makes complete lenses for this price. At the same time it is highly desirable to have. I see a huge opportunity for 3rd-party manufacturers here.

I looked at this Nikon product and a few similar aftermarket products, the Nikon mount was just perfect, a bit pricey but well crafted.

Overpriced!!! Do you really want that much weight on the body. Most quick release systems can't handle it.

Wish it came with the lens.

The beautiful new 70-200 f/4 is light enough that you don't strictly need a tripod collar. You can put the lens on a camera and carry it all day, unlike the situation with its big brother. But when you put a D800 and 70-200 f/4 on a tripod using the collar, the center of gravity is nearer the center of the rig, making any disturbance from vibration or the wind less serious. If you're looking to approach perfection you probably need the collar.
