I did a lot of research and asked photographers a lot of questions. This lens was $1k more than the 1.8. The pictures that come through this lens are remarkable!! I'm so happy with it!!

This highly touted and universally praised lens by many professional as well as serious semi-professional photographers is a great addition to your arsenal of professional high-quality, general-purpose lenses. lenses. Wonderful at capturing minute detail sharply, it also depicts facial tones beautifully with the utmost clarity and sharpness. Renders a soft tone to facial complexions at the widest aperture where a smooth and beautiful bokeh is desired and where faster shutter speeds can be effectively employed. Auto focusing is fast, efficient, and virtually silent and this highly coveted lens, by many serious portrait photographers, is highly praised for its small size and weight and, as usual, Nikon build quality is superb. A top of the line lens you will undoubtedly want to turn to often and as your go to lens of choice for all your portraiture endeavors as well as most general photography needs.

Great for portraits, no VR, so I usually shoot at f2.2 and higher, if sharper images needed. Does not like a direct sun. Combining this one with D850, before 5600. Both good results. There is CA, can be easily removed in pp. Much better lens than 50 mm either 1.4 or 1.8., the 70-200 2.8 VR fl Ed also great.

Great lens. Built well and extremely sharp. Focus calibration out of the box was perfect. Depth of Field focus blur at f/1.4 creates the perfect background for my portraits.

I was struggling to choose which portrait lens to buy between the 105 F/1.4 and the 85 F1.4. Finally I took a shot at getting this one. Once the test shots came out I just dropped since I have never seen crazy bokeh like this lens. I thought the 70-200 F/2.8 was good, but when it comes to portrait this one hit the ceiling.

I’ve wanted this lens for a year, and it was worth the wait. It’s a terrific lens - sharp, sturdy, and exceptionally well made. As a side note, the folks at Adorama made the shopping experience smooth, and I always appreciate their little free accessory bundles.

After waiting, saving, considering, and studying, I finally chose this lens for my portraiture work over the 105mm lens and over competing brands of 85mm lenses. I was not disappointed at all. The lens is solidly built and delivers a sharp image from corner to corner. When I received it, I first did a careful autofocus calibration. I then used it for about three hours, photographing everything and everyone in sight and checking the results. The next day, I had a studio sitting with a client and used this lens exclusively. I am my own pickiest critic, but I was left with nothing but smiles as I reviewed the photos during post. I've seen comments about the weight of this lens, but I don't notice the weight at all. It gives a perfect balance to my D810 and the focus ring does not inadvertently get hung up on my fingers when I shoot free-handed (no tripod). I've had that problem with other lenses, as the focus ring sits too close in towards the camera body. Not so with this lens. I couldn't be more pleased with the sharpness of the images throughout the aperture range and with the ability to achieve very shallow depth of field at the widest aperture settings. My only limitation with this lens is that my studio dimensions make photographing family shots a bit difficult at this focal length. Good thing I didn't go with the 105mm! I had been using my 24-70mm zoom for much of my portrait work, augmenting it with the 70-200mm zoom. This lens has quickly become the one I'm most attached to and I'm anticipating that I will be using it much more than the other two in the future.

This lens achieved high status because it renders skin tones, color and out of focus areas smoothly. It is technically extremely sharp as this focal length range generates some of the sharpest lens designs possible - but that is not its calling card. How it makes people & light look are its strengths. It is substantially larger than the 85mm 1.8 and much smaller than the new 105mm 1.4. It handles mid tone to highlight transitions better than the 85mm 1.8 and is very slightly less punchy overall than the 105 1.4 - which has similar smooth rendering and reluctance to blow highlights. If you are interested in a short tele for portraits your choice is between the 105mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.4. Both make magic. After using both I bought the 85mm 1.4 because I prefer the focal length - just seems right to me, I like how it makes faces look.

This is hands down my favorite lens. It stays on my camera only to be taken off when I want to photograph a landscape (which is rare, I primarily photograph people). This lens does almost everything for me, so I've really cut back on my editing time, now it's just color correcting and minor touchups for the most part. I recommend this lens to all my photographer friends. It is worth the money for sure!

So let me start by saying that for the last 10 years I've been a Canon user. Not because I had a preference, simply because it's what I started with and had enough of an investment in lenses I just stuck with it. With the release of the D850 being timed right around the time I was due for a body upgrade I decided to make the switch. This lens blows me away. I was impressed right from the moment I opened the box and saw the care and excellence of the packaging. The build quality is second to none and as for shooting all I can say is wow!!!!. I don't have a moments regret about the switch to Nikon and I definitely have a preference now.

I struggled over buying this or the 58mm. Read somewhere that the 58mm, though producing outstanding images, was a lightweight plastic lens. Don't know if that is true, but went with the 85 and am very happy. Having the 1.4 35mm in my bag didn't hurt either.

Nikon glass is so very clear. I have had Sigma lenses for a long time and have been shying away from Nikon because of the price. Now I see the big difference I will always use Nikon

Such a great lens! Definitely slower in low light, but better than Canon's 85mm 1.2 in my opinion.

Great lens, super sharp on the D4S and D810, very little corrrection required in PP. Crisp images, good compression and AWESOME Bokeh. One of my favorites. Lastly, I should mention that I had the D version for years and never thought that could be beaten but this lens actually does make a noticeable difference

I don't know if I had a bad copy, but I had too many missed shots due to auto focus issues. I returned the lens and opted for tt he Sigma 85mm Art. I'm so glad I did!

The Nikon D7100 is an impressive camera. As you get to know it, you may want to add accessories to help you get the kinds of photos you are passionate about. Here are four possible kits for four (or five) different uses.
This review was very hard to be objective about. You see, I've been waiting impatiently for Nikon to release a new 35mm f/1.4 lens for more than five years.

State of the art sharpness and color

An 85mm f/1.4 lens is about portraiture, or so it is often said. Nikon describes it as a “classic portrait lens”. But in truth it is not really a “classic” portrait lens other than focal length, because its performance is distinctly better than many classic designs, with outstanding sharpness across the frame even wide open at f/1.4. The color, contrast and sharpness even wide open at f/1.4 at least meet, and perhaps exceed, any existing 85mm f/1.4 lens on the market today, including Zeiss a...

Professional Lens
By alejack
I call it professional lens because you need to know how to handle it. This lens works great when you use it for certain conditions that a seasoned photographer would recognize easily, for example this lens is superb at shooting what i call catalog portarits with good light, i shot some that dropped my jaw. But it won't just shoot anything alone it needs you to take good decisions, the f1.4 will help to achieve small DoF that looks great but it dosen't mean that you will shoot a candle in the...
