Nice macro lens and can also be used as a "nifty fifty". Am a hobbyist photographer and purchased to use for macro photos, but also am having fun using it as a walk around street photography lens. Captures great images in my opinion and the price was right too.

I had a NIKKOR 50mm 1.4 lens in 1965 it was one of my sharpest len's, but this lens is so sharp from edge to edge you could cut your finger . great job Nikon ! patrick

I have had the MC 50mm for over a year now and I am extremely pleased with it. I primarily shoot portraits and I find that the images are sharp and the background blur renders very nicely. It is also small and lightweight and fits into my camera bag very nicely. Great buy.

I love this lens. Focusing is pretty straight forward. Focal length can be very short. But I was able to stop down to get a little more length.

From Nikon FM to Z6II - this lens is great, really versatile and who doesn't need a 50mm as a primary lens? The Macro is a sweet addition/bonus to a primary lens. Folks at the Seattle Store (Glazer's) were great in helping me transition from a Nikon FM through a Sony a6300 to the Nikon Z6II. They suggested this lens and wow, stand back this is great. The camera and lens are beyond my skill and ability but wow. Just need more time with it and I know I wont be disappointed. With this lens it is time to once again carry the camera with me when out and about.

One of the best prime lenses you can own. Great for indoor or outdoor use. Perfect for portraits too. I take it with me wherever I go.

I wanted a "nifty fifty" to match with my new Z7ii. Since I have 50mm1.4G in FX, if I need speed I can use that with the FTZ and it's about 1/2 inch longer than this lens. BUT, the Z lens is so comfortable to use and carry. It focuses fast and accurately, is very easy to focus manually and takes beautiful pictures. I chose this one to dabble in macro for the first time. I know an 85 or 105 would be better to get more working distance, but this works excellently. I have really enjoyed the Z7's focus-shift function. Background blur is well rendered. People and pets are nicely done. Overall I don't have a single regret about buying a second lens of the same focal length. Both serve different purposes.

This is a lens worthy of the Nikon line. The focus, color rendition, overall performance make it a great lens. It also works as a good Macro lens on my Z7-II for looking at flowers, food, fine print, and circuit boards. It also gets good pictures of lady bugs too :-)

Products nicely packed and secured. 50mm macro lens is under my radar for while that suit portrait and macro photography. Very nice lens less weight and easy to carry right mix of lens for portrait too and it comes with lens filter and Tripod stand in pretty good deal. Nice addition to my lens collection replacing FX macro lens.

Lens is amazing. I need some help regarding the use of a Nissin ring flash. It is somehow heavier the the lens motor can handle, so focusing is very difficult to sustain when I have to shoot vertical, facing down. Any suggestion from Nikon?

Purchased the Nikkor Z MC 50mm f/2.8 and the Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter to digitize a collection of slides. While this pair works with the Nikon Z6 II, the documentation is completely lacking. Had to figure out the correct adapter since the documentation only covered F-mount lenses. Once I had the system set-up, I quickly scanned 5 dozen slides. The Z6 II was much faster and provided a higher resolution image than using a scanner at 2400 dpi.

TLDR; This lens has a long and slow focus range and when it can?t find focus it takes way too long to hunt. If you have the 24-70 f4 kit lens, save your money and skip this one for general use. If you need a 50mm 1:1 macro lens, are willing to pay ~$600, and are willing to manual focus for your images then go for it, it does have great modern optics. My issue is the mechanical implementation. I was so excited for this lens. After a long wait, a native mount micro lens for my Z6. I had watched videos and read some reviews and thought I had a good idea how this lens would perform. Man am I disappointed though. Let me level set with my expectation, I wanted a solid autofocus lens that could get in close but also be a general use lens. While this lens meets my macro expectations it is not a good choice for general use in my opinion. First off the only place this lens actually has a 2.8 aperture is at infinity, as soon as you focus on something closer you will see that aperture number increase so less light is getting to the sensor. If you are shooting in manual mode then you need may have to adjust settings just because you need to focus a bit closer. Or if you just set the aperture to f5.6 you have a constant aperture lens as it is the max aperture at 1:1(joke with truth in it). This is fine when shooting macro as you will be stopping down anyway but I have a 50 f4 already in my 24-70. As a macro lens I have no problems with it but it is marketed as macro and general purpose. The core issue I had was that I missed general shots (outside the macro range) when it was hunting for focus in the macro range. I was using pinpoint in AF-S and AF-C modes and about half the time it ran the lens through the entire focus range just to arrive back at the focus point. When used with the eye af and tracking I did not have as much of an issue but that is not how I regularly shoot. I think this could have been solved with a focus limit switch that keeps the lens between infinity to .19m range. It would make the AF hunting less of an issue. Nikon, when this lens gets revised that would be great to see. That and the S line treatment with a quieter focus motor/mechanism. It is not loud but it can be heard in video, at least on my copy. When this lens can get focus it has the ability to takes great images that are sharp edge to edge, see below for an unedited image. For the price tag though I am disappointed in this performance of this lens when I know Nikon can do better. To sum up, If you need a 50mm 1:1 macro lens, are willing to pay $600, and are willing to manual focus for your images then this is the one. Otherwise skip it. Your mileage may vary this is just my experience. *I have a Z6 with the latest firmware available at the time. I am comparing this lenses performance with the 24-70mm f4 Z mount lens for general photography and AF performance and a Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 with M2 extension for macro performance.

I bought this when I upgraded from DX to mirrorless FX. The results are stunning, and it's a fraction of the size and weight of the DX macro I replaced, The only niggle I have is that I'm always having to switch between close and full focus mode for auto-focus.

It's just a bit better than ok. It wasn't as small as I hoped, I thought it would be a good pair with the Zfc as a walk around lens. There were two problems with that plan for me. One -- 50mm on crop sensor is 35mm equivalent of 75mm, which was a little long for me, I'm very used to 50mm and I kept getting in too close with this lens. The other issue is the 2.8 aperture. It's not too bad for brightness, but when shooting in dark interiors I really had to bump my ISO more than I wanted or lower the shutter speed so much that I was getting motion blur. I found the macro handy as I like to do a lot of close in shots, but I didn't really feel like the magnification was that great even on the cropped sensor. In the end result,I would say it seems like a nice enough lens (it is pretty sharp and gives great image quality) but it wasn't what I was looking for.

This lens is fully compatible with the Nikon ES-2 film holder set, and works extraordinarily well when used with it. The build quality - nor the cost - is not the same as the S series lenses, but seems solid enough. Its compact size and light weight also make this a versatile walk around lens. Use the 105mm macro if photographing bugs is your thing, otherwise this 50mm is a more useful all-around alternative.

This lens does what it's supposed to really well! It's unlocked a whole new world of photography for me, and I've thoroughly enjoyed using it. The lightweight nature as well is a plus. It takes solid portraits as well, though not as good as the 1.8s 50mm, I was hoping it would take it's place in my bag, but the 1.8s is just too good.

Pre-ordered the 50 and the 105, each for different reasons. Have only received the 50mm, which was intended for cramped space still-lifes and for the ES film copier. I tried it out on my z7 II and haven't been able to take it off. It turns out to be the best utility lens I've ever owned; it just works in most every situation. Did I say lightweight and comfortable?.

A great lens overall. Compact and a great focal length for walking around. The Macro ability (i.e. its specific design) is amazing. Tac sharp details with minimal (if any) chromatic aberration. Slight Vignetting (to be expected) but it adds to the composition in a good way. Focusing is fast. Well worth the money! Photo was shot with a Z6.

I pre-ordered this MC 50 the day it was announced, I've been looking forward to a native Z macro lens for quite a while. I went with the 50 over the 105 for it's smaller size, and its compatibility with the ES-2 adapter. I also didn't have a 50 prime before this, so it fills that gap. This lens is already exceeding my expectations. It's been on my Z6II full time since it arrived. So sharp, fast & quiet autofocus, and just really easy and comfortable to use. Manual focus with Focus Peaking really helps when shooting ultra close, and the focus limiter is ideal when using autofocus. Doubles as a fantastic portrait & street lens as well. This one is an easy must-have recommendation, really happy with it!

After carrying around a D4 with larger lenses for years, having this small, fun, and creative lens on my Z6 has reenergized my love for photography. Not only is it fun shooting small things closeup, it works really well as a walk-around every day lens. The hassle of carrying large, heavy gear is replaced with something that will live strapped to my shoulder.
