Great output

Great solis lens with a sharp clear outut. Photos are pin sharp and color correct. A bit hefty but you would expect it for a PRO lens. No complaints and no issues

A Great Lens

A great m4/3rds zoom lens in a small package. Took this with me on a trip to Austria and South Korea and was very pleased with the images produced with it. The small statue of this lens also doesn?t scream ?professional? when shooting in maybe more sensitive areas as some other zooms would. I also really like how Olympus has a manual clutch that is easy to engage when wanted.

My Favorite Lens

The Olympus M.ZUIKO 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro lens is always on my camera body. I shoot more pictures with this lens than any other lens in my kit. This lens is effectively a 24mm to 80mm zoom (in full frame); slightly wide angle to a short telephoto. In addition it will focus to about 20cm or 8 inches, so you can get very close to the subject and it focuses fast. The 2.8 maximum aperture also provides excellent bokeh. It's perfect for most of the photographs I make. If someone was going to buy an Olympus Micro-Four-Thirds camera body, I would recommending getting this as your first lens. Don't leave home without it!

Sharp, Lovely Build Quality, Great All Around Daily Driver

I tested this lens, and it was noticeably sharper at the edges then similar lenses. Well built, great vibration reduction, and more. Lovely bit of kit. Perfect daily driver.

great all around

Loving this lens so far. A bit bulkier than the prime lenses I would normally carry but worth it to not need to swap all the time. Great quality and solid.

Best Weather Resistant Olympus General Photography Lens

This is my go-to lens for Alaska and Caribbean scenery as well as general photography. The weatherproofing has survived many days in the rain and cold. Image stabilization produces reliable exposures even from moving trains and boats. This lens works well with my Olympus OMD EM-1 MKIII and MX1 cameras. I strongly recommend this lens for general photography that does not require a telephoto lens.

A must have, great lens addition.

Stunning image quality. Easy to carry everywhere everyday, extremely versatile piece of equipment, and at f2.8 very sharp and bright images. Very solid build, quality, weather sealed manual focus clutch, very fast auto focus when needed +++ I am happy I purchased this one.

Excellent all-purpose zoom lens!

Excellent pro-level features! A bit heavy and unwieldy on Olympus Pen bodies, but amazing optics! EM1 bodies better ergonomics.

Nice Wide Zoom BUT with limited reach

Nice lens, fast but short zoom range makes it usefulness limited for my purposes. It's almost as if Olympus made it 12-40 F2.8 deliberately so you want/need to buy the 40-150 F2.8. I still have a week or so to return and I might exchange for the 12-100 F4 which might the right compromise...I needed more zoom for my daughter's wedding next month.

A must have lens

This lens matches if not exceeds performance of the full frame DSLR lenses in this range that I have used. Combined with the incredible image stabilization features of my Olympus camera - this is a winning combination for most of my street and landscape photography needs.

Outstanding everyday use "standard / prime" lens.

Rather than opt for a fixed focal length lens such as the 17mm or 25mm as my standard or prime lens, I picked the 12-40 f2.8 PRO as my first lens for my EM-1. I have never regretted the decision. With the weather sealing against rain and dust, I don't have to be so concerned about keeping the lens (nor the EM-1) covered when I'm out in the rain. The EM-1's image stabilization makes low-light / slow shutter speeds not a concern so the f2.8 maximum aperture is plenty bright enough. Image quality is superb. Great job Olympus!

Great go-to, all around lens

This lens is very light and small, maintains sharpness with low aperture throughout the range, is quite fast and sharp at night with live bulb/live time etc, is said to be weather-proof (but I have yet to test this out), allows easy switching between AF and MF via the clutch or the L-Fn (when customized to MF), works well with extension tubes and yields great results with focus bracketing/stacking.

Really great all-around lens!

Really outstanding lens. Sharp, plenty fast enough, It's probably my largest micro 4/3 lens, but not so big as to be a burden carrying it around all day. If I would change anything, I'd want just another 10mm on the ling end, but that would make it bigger or slower. Highly recommended.

Zoom lenses do not get much better than this

Super good optics - sharp, good contrast & accurate color rendition. Rugged and reliable. Super nice switch- clutch driven - to go between AF & MF. Nice construction, have put it's through its paces since 2014. On assignment in Central America, this lens had no problem in the morning as we descended into the cooler, more humid jungle interior from the jungle road which was slightly warmer and less humid but a colleague's Canon L lens would consistently fog. I am a Canon user as well - I transitioned in 2005 from film to Canon digital & have owned some of the highest end Canon DSLR bodies and lenses. To clarify, I have nothing against the Canon brand and I am a member of Canon Professional Services at the highest tier. This M. Zuiko 12 to 40mm rocks! Period. It also has a longer reach than the Lumix 12 to 35mm. I have used this Olympus lens on the Lumix GH3 as well as the GH4.

Superb quality.

Five Star product. This Lens is just incredible. I own Canon L Lenses and I don't see a quality to be as good as this Zuiko Lens. The design of this Lens is outstanding, where other manufacturers put one, maybe two or thee high quality Glass in their design, this Zuiko Lens is design mostly out high grade glass. And this shows on the pictures. The pictures are sharp, well saturated. One of the best I took so far. I love everything about it. Maybe it is more heavy than standard Lenses, but it's ok for what you get.

Great...but heavy

I have not had this 12-40 pro for long now, but I can say I love it so far. Only complaint is the weight. Sharpest lens I have ever shot with! You can feel the quality just holding it. Start clicking the shutter and you will see the quality.

Amazing Lens - Produce tack sharp images

The lens is amazing, I can't think of one flaw. Pictures are tack sharp. A total must-have. The range is super flexible and with its 2.8 aperture you can even use this indoors with no issues.

A must have lens for your OM-D body!

I bought this lens for the new OM-D E-M1 Mark III. I am upgrading from my old E5 where I was using 7 different four thirds lenses. This lens is a must have for me moving to the lighter, more compact OM-D system. Easily replaces 3 of my old four thirds lenses to light the load. Quality build and the performance is outstanding. The 12-40mm F2.8 Pro lens truly allows me to break free with Olympus!

Equal to a bag of primes

This lens is like a bag of primes and the best wide-normal zoom I ever owned across three different systems. Build quality and IQ is superb with a great manual focus clutch ring. 0.3x close focus magnification is extremely useful and one of the things that sets many Oly Pro lenses apart from other brands. Mates perfectly on a EM1 body. Highly recommended

Forget Primes between 12-40, get this instead

Wow. That?s all I can say. First off, I have to admit that I tend to be frugal when buying camera gear. I?ve also found that I can be penny wise, pound foolish when buying camera gear. So I?ve picked up many primes between the 12-40 range with none of them being in the ?Pro? category. I?ve been satisfied with the results of my Oly 17mm 2.8, 25mm, 40mm, 19mm and 30mm Sigma and so on. I stumbled on a great deal for this lens, and while it was the most I?ve spent on a m4/3?s lens, I had high hopes for it. Suffice it to say, I was not let down at all. This thing takes the m4/3?s format to another level. My shots look so good. The focus is quiet and fast. Given that it?s mostly metal, the feel when attached to my E-M1 is perfect. Since the 2nd day of shooting, I?ve listed all of my primes that are covered by this focal length for sale since I see no reason to ever use them again. Although, I do love my 40mm and I?ll hold onto that one for a bit. Otherwise, buy this lens and don?t look back. I spent the same amount of money buying primes that fall within the range of this lens and now I see the light, so to speak.

Great general purpose PRO zoom

I recently made the switch to Olympus and purchased an OM-D E-M1X along with three M.Zuiko PRO f/2.8 zoom lenses. I bounced back and forth between the PRO 12-40 mm f/2.8 and the PRO 12.-100 f/4. I eventually went with the 12-40 f/2.8 to gain the additional stop of light. It was a great decision. This is a fantastic lens... sharp... fast focusing... and versatile. The extra stop of light comes in very handy. When compared to the 12-100 mm f/4... I only gave up 1/2 stop of IBIS performance which is no issue for me.

Hidden Advantage of 12-40mm f/2.8: IR Capability

The hidden advantage of the M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens is its completely acceptable infrared (IR) capability, especially when combined with a suitable Olympus camera body. Actual performance using a customary IR filter shows no "hotspot," which is a problem actually with other M.Zuiko lenses, and no substantial loss of contrast or ghosting, which also is often encountered. Unfortunately, the usual IR lens database (often cited online) is erroneous concerning several Olympus lenses and also fails to list this particular lens. Two online tutorials both demonstrate the IR capability of the M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens but do not point out that not all M.Zuiko lenses are IR-capable.

Must have!

How many "kit lenses" are f/2.8 and have splashproof construction? this was my first lens purchased with the E-M1 MK I a few years back, and its still going strong after many adventures. All-in-one travel lenses are great, but if you need a faster lens, sacrifice some zoom and get this gem.

What a great zoom lens!

By MICHAEL L.

This PRO lens from Olympus is weatherproof, razor sharp even wide open, beautifully built, gives gorgeous color rendition and is the perfect fit for the new OMD-EM1 body. I use it in conjunction with the 45mm f1.8 (portraits are great) and the 75mm f1.8 (phenomenal mid-tele). The 35mm equivalent is 24-80 on this lens but it has no weaknesses anywhere in its focal range from f2.8 to f8. I used to be a big-body 35mm APSC and full-frame shooter but my bag would weigh upwards of 45 lbs with bo...

Perfect All-Around Lens

By StephenP

This is my go-to lens. It spends time on my E-M1 the most and it’s what I grab most often. From hiking trials or going on a motorcycle trip. If I had to pick only one lens to have with me, this would be it. Very rugged and waterproof. It lived in my tank bag with n my motorcycle for 3000 miles of road riding. It was used for both stills and video work.

OLYMPUS ED 12-40 F/2.8 PRO M4/3 LNS BLK

Want to pair your Olympus with a sophisticated, high-quality lens that’s as versatile as it is sharp? Then meet the OLYMPUS ED 12-40 F/2.8 PRO M4/3 LNS BLK, a lens capable of handling everything from night photography to sports and action to weddings—sometimes, all at once. Depending on the wedding.

Product Highlights

  • Autofocus is a key feature here, and it’s what many of our customers find they enjoy about the Olympus ED 12-40 lens. Not only is its autofocus accurate, but it’s quiet enough to keep the emphasis on the subject rather than the camera itself.
  • Easily interchangeable means you don’t have to make this the sole lens in your repertoire of Olympus lenses, though with the versatility of the Olympus ED 12-40 lens, you may just find that you do it anyway.
  • Excellent focal length gives you plenty of options for choosing subjects ranging from landscapes to up-close people.

It takes an excellent photographer to make a lot out of a bad lens; but when you’re working with this Olympus, even the most casual of photography enthusiasts will find that their pictures look really, really good.

Learn about the OLYMPUS ED 12-40 F/2.8 PRO M4/3 LNS BLK

What can a capable lens handle? The better question might be, what can a lens like the OLYMPUS ED 12-40 F/2.8 PRO M4/3 LNS BLK                not handle? Featuring a maximum aperture of F2.8, a filter at 62mm, and a light 13.4 oz overall weight, this 12-40mm Olympus lens is capable of handling a wide range of scenery and events with consistent output and sophisticated picture design. Compare it to a 12 35 lens, or a 12-35mm Panasonic lens, and you’ll see that the Olympus featured here more than holds its own.

But a lens is more than the sum of its parts: it’s also, well, its parts. You can’t ignore what goes into a lens, after all! To better understand exactly what makes this Olympus ED 12-40 lens so sophisticated, we’ll have to break it down by the technical specifications. Let’s get started.

  • Premium focal length. Good focal length is important in any lens, whether you’re talking about photography or, heck, astronomy. The focal length here is 12-40 mm, as the title suggests, or a 24-80mm (35mm equivalent focal length). That gives you plenty of options for selecting what you can shoot with this camera, as many customers have found that they get plenty of use in landscapes, low lighting situations, night photography, weddings, wildlife, and more. That’s quite an array of options, and the focal length facilitates exactly that kind of versatility.
  • Accessories. Some people think of a lens as an accessory. Nope! A lens is an important part; it should come with its own crucial accessories. This Olympus ED 12-40 lens comes with a lens cap, a lens rear cap, a lens hood, a lens case (with instruction manual) and an Olympus 1 year warranty card, ensuring that you get plenty of use out of your new lens. The whole shebang is one camera-strap short of a full camera kit, which ensures that you’ll look like a professional even when your interest is merely that of an enthusiast.
  • Construction. Nowhere is the actual construction more important than in a lens like the Olympus 12mm-40 mft lens. Here with the Olympus 40-150 there are 14 elements in 9 groups, including an aspherical ED lens, two aspherical lenses, a DSA lens, 2 ED lenses, an HD lens, and 2 HR lenses. This offers high-quality video as well as the crisp, clear shots you would expect from an Olympus lens of this quality. Consult any review of the Olympus 2.8 zoom and you’ll see that the construction here is intricate, and the design effective.
  • Magnification. 0.3x magnification is available here—with the 35mm equivalent max. image magnification of 0.6x. That will give you plenty of options in choosing your subjects, your portraits, your landscapes, and more—all while utilizing the subtle blurring background effect that makes a portrait so effective.
  • Fast and accurate auto-focus. Just ask any of the customers at Adorama and they’ll likely tell you the same: the fast and smooth auto-focus here is one of the chief components that makes the Olympus ED 12-40 lens such an easy piece to work with.

Want more out of your lens? Then you might need a time machine, because at this price point, the OLYMPUS ED 12-40 F/2.8 PRO M4/3 LNS BLK is a premium purchase, and as shrewd a decision as anyone can make here at Adorama.

From the Manufacturer
This large-aperture 3.3x Zoom lens is the first in the newly created "M.ZUIKO PRO" category. Covering a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-80mm, this lens features all metallic construction and makes extensive use of high grade optical components including Dual Aspherical, High Refractive and ED lens elements configured in 9 groups to assure the highest level of reproduction. A fast maximum aperture of f2.8 throughout the zoom range, a manual focus clutch as well as Splash-proof, Dust-proof and Freeze-proof construction make it suitable for the most demanding professionals and enthusiasts. An "MSC" (movie and still compatible) AF lens drive system ensures fast and quiet auto-focusing - especially important when shooting HD movies. A seven blade circular aperture produces pleasing background defocusing effects.
