Still good camera for videographers, with 4k

I had a similar model of camera from panasonic for forever. It was getting old (10 years) so I decided to upgrade. Build quality is much better, image quality most definitely better. Lots of new features to make sure you get the best image possible in all lighting conditions. I also love the fact it has 4k and wifi capabilities.

EXCELLENT camera. I have had NONE of the weird glitchy problems people seem to have with the Sony and BMD cams (overheating, failures, whatever). Has NEVER failed me. It just works consistently well, and is well designed. There is a learning curve, but well worth the investment in time. I added the GH-5 later so the pair gives me a great system with my various lenses (Sigma Art 18-35 EF lens via Metabones adapter, various Lumix/Leica lenses) for use in the video I do. MFT doesn't/can't deliver the deep DOF you get with full-frame cams, but for the work I do, and with ND filters, I can get some good DOF. Bottom line: It's a winner!

I shot my last three video project on this guy. A feature length and a pair of short films. It puts out amazing quality for such a low price. Sure, the GH5 is nice, but holy crap, at $699 this is an amazing value.

It's just a tool. But the good about it that now this tool cost OK money. So I bought gh4 and going to invest in lenses instead of buying gh5

Will probably need to pick up a speedbooster at some point for additional low light capabilities, and to take back some of the crop lost due to MFT and 4K. So far, very pleased with the output of this workhorse. Has all the tools needed: waveform, histogram, audio levels, level, remote control/viewing, timelape, DCI 4K, UHD, 4:3 Anamorphic, 10-bit 422 external, etc.

This camera has one of the most versatile mounts that can use almost any lens. Unfortunately it does not have an in body stabilizer and makes for shaky video. I would recommend the gx85 for video. This camera can not do video or Stills perfectly and cost is high. Maybe if it was $800 I would consider keeping it.

This is a great 4k capable camera and has received many positive reviews elsewhere. However, there are some issues that increase its cost and these need to be factored in. The main deficiency of this otherwise excellent camera is that it does not do well in low light. This problem can be fixed but requires one, if not two, additional purchases. First, if you get the Metabones Speed Booster, you gain a stop of light, and can also attach non-MFT lenses. The downside is the Booster costs ($) And second, if you don't already own a fast lens, and by fast, I mean f1.8 or faster, then you will need to pony up for that. And sadly, fast lenses aren't usually cheap either, so you can expect to pay another ($) or so for that. But if you do, you will be effectively shooting at f1.2 and that solves your low light problem. However, those purchases are equal to the cost of the camera itself, so it is definitely something to consider. Of course, you can always just add external lighting to deal with low light, but that may or may not be a practical solution (pun intended). My other complaint is that to shoot in the most gradable format, VLOG, Panasonic wants you to pay an additional ($) for that. That seems a bit of a racket if you ask me. I mean they might as well just turn you upside down and shake you to see what falls out of your pockets. If you factor in all these additional costs, the Speed Booster, the fast lens, and V-log, well, that basically puts you in Sony A7S territory, so you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? If you mostly shoot in daylight and rarely in low light, I'd say the GH4 is a no brainer. But if you shoot mostly in low light with little control over the circumstances, then you might as well go with the Sony A7S. Currently, I have the GH4 with the Speedbooster and was able to use an old Sigma 20 mm f1.8 lens, so in my case, this is a reasonable set-up for under 2,000 and I'm pleased with its low light performance shooting in Cinelike-D.

After nearly 2 years of use for mostly 4K video, I'm still amazed by the quality and capabilities of this little camera. I've used pro broadcast video cameras for over 30 years, and to have this thing outperform them in countless ways at something like 1/10th the price (and 1/10th the weight!) is simply amazing. But yes, the low light capabilities could be better.

PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY
What can the PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY do? As a low light compact camera, the better question might be: what can’t it do? When you’re talking about a camera body with a premier viewfinder, Wi-Fi® connectivity, plenty of luminance adjustment, focus peaking—you’re talking about a camera body with “the works.”
Product Highlights
The Panasonic GH4 camera body is a camera body for someone who wants it all—and believes that they can have it in one single product and one single purchase at Adorama.
Learn about the PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY
Between the words you see thrown about when describing cameras—durability, compatibility, versatility—is another, more underrated word: reasonability. The PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY is the quintessential reasonable camera body. What do we here at Adorama mean by reasonable? We mean that it knows what photographers like you want, and it responds in kind by providing exactly that, offering all of the technical specifications that make a camera body attractive in the first place. It’s reasonable by giving you exactly what you need to take high-quality pictures: no muss, no fuss. And in many areas, it goes above and beyond reasonability into pure, raw photographic ability.
So how do we define reasonability at Adorama? Let’s explore the many features of the Panasonic GH4 camera body:
Calling the PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY a “reasonable” camera might strike you as a back-handed compliment: until you read the specs and find out that in Adorama-speak, “reasonable” translates to “durable, versatile, and capable.” This camera body is capable in just about every area it serves, offering you a plethora of options for your intermediate and advanced photography. The only question is: are you reasonable enough to procure one for yourself?
From the Manufacturer
The Panasonic LUMIX GH4 builds on the legacy of the renowned LUMIX GH3s image quality and world class video capabilities. Now supporting 4K quality video, the Panasonic LUMIX GH4 allows photographers and cinematographers to explore above and beyond with in camera creative options and astonishing focus control that sets the new standard for mirrorless hybrid photography.
When combined with one of the many LUMIX G Lenses or movie industry PL mount cine lenses, the LUMIX GH4 provides the ultimate platform for video. Photographers will enjoy the controls and image quality expected of a professional grade main system camera for still and hybrid photography. Both will enjoy the durability and lightweight portability that a modern mirrorless DSLM digital camera offers over legacy DSLR systems.
16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor achieves high quality, high sensitivity image recording with its quick response. An approximately 50% higher speed signal readout suppresses the effect of a rolling shutter when using electronic shutter or recording video. The Live MOS Sensor delivers an expanded gradation range by a maximum1/3 step at low ISOs. Superior noise reduction allows for exposures up to 60 minutes long.
Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. With the Panasonic Image App, remote photo and video shooting is available with a compatible smartphone or tablet, and can easily add embed geotag data in an image after shooting. Even if a smartphone / tablet is incompatible with NFC, you can still be easily connect to the camera by scanning the QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor from your mobile device.
VFR (Variable Frame Rate) Time Lapse Shot / Stop Motion Animation
The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) enables Full-HD video recording with slow/fast motion such as 96 fps / 4x. Time Lapse Shot and Stop Motion Animation produce a stop motion (stop frame) video with sequential pictures. Both are created in-camera without any postproduction process.
Selectable System Frequency
For the global business and professional user, the system frequency is flexible from 59.94Hz (23.98Hz) / 50.00Hz / 24.00Hz.
Superb Mobility & High-Speed Response
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 delivers superb mobility and high-speed response. The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve ultra high speed AF of approximately 0.07 sec. The burst shooting power is boosted to 12 fps (AFS), and both 2,359K-dot LVF (Live View Finder) and 1,036K-dot rear monitor adopt OLED to minimize time lag while enhancing the resolution.
Superb Picture Quality for Lifelike Textures
The Panasonic LUMIX GH4's Venus Engine image processor is equipped with a quad-core CPU that delivers high speed signal processing. Combined with the Digital Live MOS Sensor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximum ISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction while achieving exceptional picture quality with a natural look and feel that LUMIX is famous for.
Electronic Shutter & Silent Mode
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 boasts an electronic shutter. The high-speed signal readout from the Live MOS Sensor minimizes rolling shutter effect. The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AF assist lamp and flash with just a single setting for special shooting occasions.
High Performance Professional Shutter
The shutter unit boasts professional graded added durability delivering approximately 200,000 release times. You'll be empowered with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 second, not only for capturing spur-of-the-moment fast moving subjects, but also using a high-speed lens with an open aperture even in outdoors to achieve the desired defocus effect. Both the built-in and external flash can be synchronized with a maximum 1/250 second shutter speed.
Reliable Durability
Tough enough to withstand even heavy field use, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 is composed of a magnesium alloy full die cast front / rear frame. It also features splash / dustproof construction with sealing on every joint, dial, and button. The shutter unit is designed for durability and delivers approximately 200,000 release times.
49-Area AF/ Custom Multi AF
Focus point is increased from 23 points in the LUMIX GH3 to 49 points in the LUMIX GH4 for more flexibility in your composition. Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select the blocks to focus out of the 49 focusing areas.
Real-Time Output with HDMI
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 is capable of real-time image output (4:2:2 / 8 bit or 4:2:2 / 10 bit) to the external monitor via an optional micro HDMI cable. This is perfect for professional video making that requires serious monitoring. Choose to output only the recording content, or the content with the setting menus individually, depending on the display.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 delivers RAW images in-camera. The color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, exposure compensation, contrast, highlight / shadow, saturation, noise reduction, and sharpness or hue can be flexibly adjusted while LUMIX' s Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Photo Style
You can choose color or texture type for photos and videos from Standard / Vivid / Natural / Monochrome / Scenery / Portrait. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameter for each mode can be adjusted and even set into the camera's memory.
