I bought this lens years ago, but don't have the need to use it much. Reading reviews about poor focus at 300mm, I thought I would take a couple of shots. I shot this photo of a cedar fence at 20 ft at 300mm. I thought the IQ was very acceptable for this price lens.

Of all the Canon products I have purchased (three camera bodies, five lenses, and a printer this lens is the one product that has not lived up to my expectations. I found it nearly impossible to get a focused and stable shot. Every now and then it would produce a good shot but most were not acceptable. For the first year or so I thought it was a lack of skill on my part. I did not think it was a malfunctioning autofocus motor or image stabilization system. After two years of difficulty using the lens I took it to a camera shop and they checked it out. What they told me is that both the IS motor and Autofocus motors were not working or malfunctioning. As I reflect on it, I think those systems were never functioning adequately from the start. I had thought it was my inability to use this lens proficiently. It now seems more likely that it was a malfunctioning lens all along. Since then I have purchased a non-Canon brand long lens with which I am able to take terrific photos that I would have like to have captured with my original 70-300 mm lens. It now clear that my skill level was never the problem with my use of the 70-300mm lens. While my experience with this lens is not good, I have had great experiences with four other Canon lenses in my camera bag and my camera body is Canon. I will continue to buy Canon products. But cannot recommend this particular lens.

This lens has fulfilled my expectations. Of course it will never get a bird on top of the tree, but for closer animals, for flowers, even insects, it's perfect. No need to have a tripod. The bokeh is absolutely beautiful. The autofocus is pretty fast.

This lens though for a full frame DSLR works great on an APSC sensor. It is Long when at full focal length.

Beats the "standard" telephoto lens that comes with most packaged buys, so I purchased Canon 80D body and this USM lens as separate items. What a wonderful system I have....,!!!

Optically, on my 7D, this lens produces stellar performance. The Colors are true, the images are sharp, and the zoom range is exactly where it needs to be bring objects from far enough away right there.

I bought this refurbished lens for wild life and sports use. But before I could use it my brother took it out to take pictures of some eagles around his home. The lens is spot on, turning out some great shots. The lens was mounted on a Canon 80D. It's not an L lens but does a great job for half of the price.

I rented this lens for four days to test and compare versus the L and the new version of this when it comes out. I really wanted to like this lens - it's lightweight and relatively inexpensive. I found it difficult to get precise focus at moderate to long zoom lengths, the IS wasn't quite as supportive as I expected, corners remained too soft even at f16-22, and it was a little too slow to autofocus. Bottom line: I would try this lens first before buying as these may not be problems for you.

Did not have any great hopes for this lens at the price I paid for it but it has surprised me and exceeded my expecations. While it is not at a professional level it is worth birning it along with me.

I really like this lens. Affordable. Great quality. One issue I seem to be having is with the manual focus, and manual focus is so important when other things are closer than the photo subject. Will continue to test the manual focus daily for five more days. If continue to have an issue will return lens for replacement, repair or refund.

I bought this lens to round out what I carry for walk around lens. It provides the flexibility needed for use while shooting wildlife. I really like both the dual stabilization and the lens lock. Excellent service from Adorama as the lens arrived in two working days.

I have owned this lens for a few years and you it on my 60 D and my 5D Mark III and love it to death. This lens is a must-have in your bag. If you're shooting a sporting event or spring flowers this lens gives you sharp clear images.

I bought this lens 3 years ago as an additional to my then older 60D and it performs well and giving me excellent results. Never used it for video as STM types are recommended but still I'm satisfied with the bundled standard 18-135 when I bought the set from Dell. Now that I have the newer 7DM2, it even performs well since my new camera body is really for fast shots, all-weather situations needed in sports and wildlife photography. I got it with me now on my winter vacation to Winnipeg and mind you, even this lens didn't go wrong at extreme -39 on ice-hole fishing trip to Selkirk, Manitoba. It's so amazing I have this lens with Canon 7D Mark II.

For the price, this lens is good. Has decent focus and a decent speed. For the price, the only thing I wish was available was that I could an extender with it. However, that is only available for the L lenses.

I've had this lens for about a year now, and it has been one of my favorites. The biggest disadvantage I've faced is that this is not a fast lens at all. This is really noticeable on a telephoto lens. If you're taking photos indoors without excellent lighting, you're going to have to make some sacrifices. That said, with good lighting this lens is very sharp for the price. Even around 300mm I don't notice too much softness in photos. If you're looking for a lens that can perform well outdoors, this might be a good value for you. If you're working with limited light, I don't think I would recommend it.

I bought this lens last year and it's serving its purpose on my 7D. I have had NO issues with it and it's nice and sharp. For those who are able, micro focus the lens. I own many primes and this one works well with no issues.

I have been using a Canon 100 - 400mm "L" lens for several years and love it. The biggest issue I had with the 100 - 400mm lens was it's size and weight. A friend bought a 70 - 300mm lens and after looking at it I think it would fill a gap I had not being able to carry a long lens in my smaller camera bag. I'm pleased with the results of shooting with this lens as well as the ease of carrying it.

This lens is a joy to own and use for pulling that distant object in for a closer view. The auto focus and the image stabilization are both excellent. I read some talk about lens creep (meaning that if you point the camera up or down the lens might change zoom settings due to it's own weight), but that has not happened to me yet. Maybe it will when it gets a little older. I found the amount of effort I needed to turn the barrell to zoom and/or focus (in manual) was very comfortable for me so that it wasn't too loose or too tight. It is a little heavier as you would expect for a zoom of this focal length, but I won't be using it a lot so that is okay with me. Sure I'd love to have something a little faster, but for the money this one works great.

The stock in trade of the wildlife photographer is the telephoto lens. Most animals are small and get spooked when humans are near.

love the focal range,my most used lens! takes good indoor pics with low light and hand held.took some pics of seagulls flying and fishing at local pond and got some tack sharp images at all focal lengths! even 300mm looks sharp with 100% crops! works great with my 7d! great all around lens! only negative is focus ring a little loose but decided to go with image quality and not build quality.not L class build quality but image quality looks L class for a fraction of the cost.compact and light ...

Excellent Semi-Pro Lens
By WMD
I am a professional photographer and bought this lens as a carry-around (since it is lighter and smaller than the "L"s) for taking shots of family and friends for non-commercial use. I have since found that this lens is comparable to the "L" lenses in many ways, and has become a major part of my commercial work as well. The images produced are sharp and clear, AF is quick and the weight is perfect for normal use. The image stabilizer works wonderfully! This lens works equally well in both b...

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too
