For the money, you can't get a better portrait lens. It's sharper, lighter, and less expensive than a zoom lens. It stays on my Z9, since my business is portraiture.

Very sharp lens, even wide open at close distance. A clear upgrade from the 40mm f/2 that I sold in exchange for this one. It's a bit expensive for a f/1.8 prime, but it's well worth the price if you take advantage of a sale. None of the Z-mount f/1.8 S primes are your average consumer grade.

Absolutely love this lens! Everything you'd expect in a 35mm prime - very sharp edge to edge.

I have been using a 24mm f/1.8 with a Nikon Z 6II and DJI RSC 2. In some situations the 24mm is a little too wide so I bought this 35mm f/1.8 to get a little tighter shots. The 35mm has less distortion than the 24mm as well. The lens is lighter in weight than the 24mm which is good. Every ounce saved makes a difference. It's less fatigue when holding the gimbal for long periods of time. The depth of field looks really good where the focus is on the model and not the background. If you are doing portrait work you can't go wrong with this lens. The images look beautiful.

New to photography and this was my first lens purchase (outside of the kit) for my Z50. The quality of this lens is amazing. The 1.8 aperture really blurs out the background. Like I mentioned I am still new to photography so I am still learning about my camera and now this new lens.

Love using my 35 1.8. It is a bit big and I never use the lens shade because it fell off first time out and I lost it. The glass does a good job in the Sun so I'm not worried. Very solid build.

I recently upgraded to a Z6 from a D700 and quickly realized I wasn't going to be able to autofocus with most of my old lenses. I always loved shooting with my 85mm and my 50mm so this was super depressing. I decided to splurge on one versatile z lens for the camera, and I decided on the 35mm. I just got it today, but so far, I love it! It's super sharp and the quality is beautiful. I prefer it to the 50mm now.

My venture into the mirroless was a scary jump for me. But once I put this Z35 1.8s on my new Z7II on it . Just amazing! This lens is crisp and turning into my new “go to” lens for my street portraits, my photography world has just expanded. Happy customer here!

Happy with the purchase! This Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 is my first Prime Z lens. It is super sharp, both in-focus and off-focus. Light weight, well made, fast and quite focusing. I have kept it on my Z-6 since I got it. To me, it can well fit my most walk-around needs, indoor/outdoor portrait, family videoing, and etc. Like it very much!

I've been shooting with this lens for about 3 months now and I love it. Using this lens on my Z7 has made me fall in love with the 35mm perspective all over again. Its sharp, compact and great in low light for everything from landscapes to newborn shoots, but also quiet enough (for me) to use for video as I begin experimenting in that as well. A tad pricey in my honest opinion (that's why it gets 4 stars from me), but the quality is there to justify it. It's a lens that I look forward to using for years to come on my Z7.

This is the best 85mm Nikkor lens I've had. This is on my top 2 favorite portrait lenses with the 120mm f1.4g. I highly recommend it!

35 1.8 Great Lens
By Godric
I have been shooting with the Z6 for 6 months and recently purchased the 35 1.8. first, you can hold this camera and lens all day, so comfortable and very light. this lens is quick to focus and is perfect for all around photography. I have used it for an entire night of photographing Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando, I thought i would have some troubles due to the very low light to no light but to my happy surprise, it focused quickly, locked on to my targets, the 1.8 help...

Magnificent Low Light Reproduction Lens
By Scripps23
I recently used the new Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S lens inside the dark environment of the Musee d'Orsay art museum in Paris, France where photography (without flash and tripod) is allowed. This lens renders spectacular results in low light due to its optical excellence and the associated superior design of the Nikon Z7 camera body. Below is an image of Vincent van Gogh's oil on canvas titled "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" that renders color and every brush stroke perfectly.
Specially built for Nikon’s latest line of FX-format mirrorless cameras, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S lens offers the ideal focal length for shooting a wide range of subjects and scenes, including landscapes and portraits. And with a maximum aperture of f/1.8, this impressive wide-angle lens helps capture well-exposed images with stunning background bokeh even in challenging shooting situations. Its optical design features three aspherical and two extra-low dispersion elements, all of which work together in reducing distortion and aberrations to deliver clearer and sharper images with spectacular detail. The lens surfaces have also been applied with Nano Crystal and Super Integrated coatings to significantly minimize flare and ghosting, resulting in accurate colors and high-contrast results. Just like the other Z lenses included in Nikon’s new mirrorless system, this 35mm has a programmable control ring on the lens body that provides more intuitive control over camera and exposure settings. Rounding off its advanced features are its fast, quiet, and precise AF system and full-time manual focusing for both photo and video modes.
I was lucky enough to spend a full week shooting nearly non-stop with the new Nikon mirrorless system. I may have stopped for sleep a bit but, otherwise, I was able to shoot in multiple regions throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and then flew a few hours up north, with our crew, to Guanajuato, Mexico. And then I shot a whole lot more. I was able to put the new system through the paces — shooting in large, rainforest-like sinkholes, in pitch-dark caves, at pink lagoons, above colorful landscapes, and in and above the streets of a large, sprawling city.
My first impression of the new system is pretty straightforward: It’s just extraordinary.

35mm prime. A desert-island lens for many. Wide enough to nail the view. Shallow enough to draw out subjects. Fast enough to make the impossible possible. And so sharp.... just utter unwavering sharpness. In reimagining this classic lens for the new Z system, we may very well have perfected it.
Breakthrough Z system performance
Empowered by the Z system's larger mount, shorter flange distance, raw imaging power and video capabilities, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S will redefine your perceptions of what an f/1.8 lens can do.
Epic definition and resolution from the center of the frame to the edges, even at its f/1.8 maximum aperture. No need to stop this lens down.
An improved optical formula for virtually zero flare, ghosting, coma or chromatic, spherical and axial aberration, even at the far edges of the frame.
Versatile 35mm angle of view
Few lenses are as versatile as a fast 35mm prime. The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens is ideal for landscapes, street photography, weddings, environmental portraits, and more. A favorite among filmmakers for its human-eye perspective. Brilliant in low-light situations. Lightweight and portable.
A 9-blade rounded diaphragm and f/1.8 aperture combine with the larger mount and shorter flange distance to produce stunning round bokeh.
Human eye-perspective puts viewers at the heart of the shot, whether it's an interview, tutorial video or product demo. Near-silent autofocus is powered by a new stepping motor.
Draws peak performance from a Z series mirrorless camera's outstanding low light capabilities. Captures point-of-light sources like streetlights with uncanny sharpness and minimal spherical aberration.
Next-generation Z design and optics
Nikon Z mirrorless lenses, perfectly matched to Z series full frame mirrorless camera bodies, are designed with a sense of consistency that combines reliability and beauty with next-dimension optical performance for freedom in image creation.
Extensively sealed against dust and moisture, especially around all moving parts of the lens barrel. Compact, lightweight, and ideally balanced on a Nikon Z series camera.
The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens's customizable control ring can be used for manual focusing (default), aperture control (great for iris transitions during video recording), or exposure compensation.
Uses the Z mirrorless cameras' superior in-camera image stabilization system for up to 5 stops of pitch, roll, yaw, X and Y shake correction. Additional electronic VR (e-VR) during video capture.
Stepping Motor: NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
Aspherical – Extra-low Dispersion Glass Elements: An ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that features the characteristics of an Aspheric glass element for a more compact-sized lens. Like Aspherical lenses, AS-ED lens elements minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens. The AS-ED lens elements are optical glass developed by Nikon to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
Aspherical Lens: A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
Nano Crystal Coat: An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism: An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.
IF Lens: A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKOR lenses do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Fluorine Coat: Photographers need gear that can withstand the elements. Nikon’s fluorine coat effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even when they adhere to the lens surface. Nikon’s fluorine coat endures a high frequency of lens surface wiping and its anti-reflective effect also contributes to the capture of clear images.
Super Integrated Coating: Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
