The 100-400ii EF L is an extremely fast focusing and very sharp lens what works well with my Canon R5ii. It also remains sharp with the Canon 1.4 EF II extender. It's a bit heavier than the newer 100-500 RF L lens but the build quality of the EF lens is top tier and with the extender, the 100-400 EFii allows for the full range of zoom where the 100-500 RF lens with the RF extender restricts the zoom range and the full retraction of the lens barrel. I also own the Canon 200-800 RF zoom which I also use for longer range reach. The two lenses provide all I need for long reach subjects.

Capable lens in so many ways. Transition to mirrorless bodies is seamless. From Airshows, birding, and Solar Eclipse this is an amazing tools.

This lens was purchased as the alternative to an EF 600mm f/4L IS USM used for birds and wildlife. Obviously, the 600mm isn't suited to walking around, or keeping on hand for opportunistic shots. The build quality is excellent. It is a rugged lens and while it is not light, it is the extensive glass and the metal body adding that weight so there's real benefit to that cost. While the 400mm maximum and f/5.6 limit at that length can't match it, the performance of the 100-400mm is more than adequate for the settings and conditions it does fit. I was afraid I would be compromising on IQ but that fear quickly vanished as I found that at any focal length this lens can produce razor sharp, high contrast shots I am happy to call my work. The usability is top notch as well. The AF is fast, not quite as fast as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM but close. I rarely have a problem getting good focus, and in time to get the shot. The image stabilization is excellent as well, and with three modes, including one that stabilizes only at the moment of shooting, it doesn't interfere with getting the shot with dynamic, moving subjects like birds in flight. With the barrel retracted and the hood inverted it presents a surprisingly compact package making it easy to carry and even with the hood in shooting position if it is zoomed to 100mm it can easily be carried on a strap while walking or hiking. The other unexpected bonus with this lens is the exception close focus distance of about 1m (3ft). Because of this, I find myself using this lens for a lot more "normal" photography, including portraiture, candids, and even "telemacro" of flowers, insects, and the like. Overall, this lens should be in the kit of any Canon shooter needing a telephoto lens in this range. The combination of performance, ruggedness, and versatility make it a lens you will find yourself using constantly.

I'm still getting to know the lens, but so far it has met my expectations. I have been impressed with the smoothness and tension control of the zoom ring. I love the lens' ability to focus on subjects as close as 3 feet.

Pro quality pictures. The zoom factor is perfect for me. Although kind of on the slow side, I got use to using the Exposure compensation and the results were excellent.

Built like a tank, I love the reach these lens gives me and the pictures are crystal sharp! It took only 3 days from ordering to receiving my purchase. Faster than I expected and no damage during shipping.

Love my new lens. It allows me to capture my subject so much clearer and larger from a longer distance. I love the ability to tighten the zoom to maintain a constant distance to focus on.

Came up for a fair price used, so I took a flyer. Own an incredibly sharp 400mm f4 DO, so telephoto was pretty much covered. Also have the 180mm Macro, which is a standout lens. This lens covers both ends and what's in between, and does it with high contrast, high resolution, and tolerable weight. Certainly much less than carrying both the others into the field. It's my "walk around" lens, because of all this. Other photos seem to emphasize the telephoto capability. I'm here to say that it's also a great close-up choice. Not selling the DO or the macro, but I put them on the camera for their purpose, not grab shots.

I purchased my lens in 2015 and have been using it since. I've taken hand-held photographs where object I wanted to get was moving fast. The lens locked on in most instances, allowing me to get photos that would not be possible using other lenses.

Super lens -- super price -- can't go shooting without it! Canon L series are the best IMHO. This lens has increased in price by several hundred dollars post-pandemic. Glad I got it when I did!

Have had this lens for two+ years now and it is one of my go-to pieces of glass. Can't imagine how I went so long without it. And to top it all off, I bought it on sale for about $1800 from Adorama which included a couple of really good Hoya filters. The price of this lens has increased dramatically since my purchase so I am one happy customer!

I couldn't believe how lightening fast this lens focused and the result is crystal clear photos even at cropped 50% or more. I have taken all my test pictures from my free hand with no tripod with incredible results. I cant wait to get out into the field and capture wildlife photos. I would have to believe that at long distances on the tripod that this lens will perform exactly to my hopes and expectations. Pricy but worth every penny as far as I am concerned!

Don?t regret the purchase of this beauty! Hasn?t let me down yet. I?m used to the weight now and most of the time don?t even use a tripod. Use it on my 5d mark IV as well as my 80D when I want that extra 1.6x?s reach. I use it for moon and sun photography as well as wildlife. Highly recommended!

Great lens for action in the field. Love it with a mono-pod when you don't want the additional 'stops' in 'stabilization' mode. It's definitely a high-end addition to the bag for us amateur types.

I have received the lens and like it very much. I look forward to using it, especially this winter. Even though it was out of stock when I ordered it, got it reasonably quick. Thank you.

There is just no comparison to this lens in this range. I have tried many different lenses and still come back to the 100-400L. It is by far the fastest and sharpest lens you can get in this range. I shoot a lot of sports and action photography as well as air shows and the success rate I have with good sharp photos with this lens is better than any other lens I have tried. I have put it against the Sigma 150-600 both the contemporary and the sports version. I have also tried the Tamron 150-600. They are good lenses and offer a slightly better reach but I find with the Canon lens I can always crop in on the image if needed because the quality of the image is good enough. I waited for years to finally make the purchase because of the cost but I definitely do not regret it. If you want the best and can afford it this is the lens for you.

Photographing cars is lots of fun. They come in a staggering variety of sizes, shapes and colors and each one is interesting to photograph for different reasons. Sure it's fun to gawk, but bring your camera (you might even sell a few photos).

This week, we took to the air with a newly announced drone by DJI, got our shots to go even further with a new zoom lens from Canon, and got a holiday makeover on a popular mirrorless from Sony. After using the Canon 300mm L f4 for years, there was a learning curve to a zoom lens for my birding photography- not a fault of the lens, just me. And still working on getting the best from the combination of the 7d MkII with this lens and getting the best settings to make them work together best. Generally I'm in pretty good light and have learned to be less afraid of bumping up the ISO to get the best from this this lens, which sounds like the opposite approach but has really worked well. ...

A Lens You Should Consider!
By mickT
The EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM is an outstanding lens for several reasons. The overall build quality is superb and there are many beneficial features included with the lens. Zooming with the new rotational zoom ring is very smooth and the tension can be adjusted from loose, where the lens will extend out if the camera is held pointing down, to firm where the lens doesn't extend when held pointing down. When adjusted to the firmer setting the lens still zooms easily. The autofocus is ...

What makes a zoom lens such a necessary part of any professional photographer’s repertoire? Well, the existence of wildlife, for one. And secondly, not every beautiful photo opportunity is going to be right next to you. With a minimum focusing distance of 3.2 feet, the CANON EF 100-400mm 4.5/5.6L USM IS II USA is built for those times that the best possible photograph is on the horizon:
Long story short: procure one of your very own Canon zoom lenses and you’ll be glad when that next picture opportunity shows up right on the edge of the horizon.
There’s a shot you know you need to take, but there’s just one problem—it’s far away, and the subject (like wildlife) is uncertain to stay. Whether you’re on a safari taking a picture of a stunning gazelle or on a North American nature trip spotting a Bald Eagle, the problem is clear: you need a high-capacity zoom lens that won’t blur and shake like the other lenses. Meet the CANON EF 100-400mm 4.5/5.6L USM IS II USA, a lens capable of doing all that and more. Like many zoom lenses at Adorama, this lens is great for wildlife shots and active photography—but we think you’ll find that as you read more and more about this lens, it’s capable of doing just about anything you can demand from it.
It takes a lot to construct a zoom lens—just ask NASA—but it doesn’t always mean you need to have a space agency-sized budget to take spectacular zoom photos. Procure a CANON EF 100-400mm 4.5/5.6L USM IS II USA of your very own here at Adorama and you’ll be on your way to professional-grade photography.
Are you a professional photographer seeking unparalleled telephoto performance The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is a high-caliber, long telephoto zoom lens meticulously engineered for use with Canon's full-frame DSLRs, and it's also compatible with APS-C models for added versatility. This lens has been reimagined with cutting-edge technology, incorporating the latest in image stabilization, autofocus, and lens design to deliver superior image quality and lightning-fast AF.
Capture the world with exceptional clarity and minimal distortion, thanks to the advanced optics of this lens. It features an Air Sphere Coating (ASC) on multiple elements to significantly reduce backlit flaring and ghosting, ensuring your images are crisp and high-contrast even in challenging lighting conditions. The optical construction includes a fluorite element and one Super UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) element, meticulously crafted to correct aberrations while enhancing sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity.
Experience up to 4 stops of stabilization with the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS). This feature is crucial for maintaining image sharpness at long focal lengths, where camera shake is magnified. The OIS system offers three selectable modes - standard, panning, and during exposure only - to accommodate various shooting scenarios and ensure you capture the perfect shot, whether you're tracking fast-moving wildlife or shooting in low-light environments.
The upgraded Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and high-speed CPU, along with optimized AF algorithms, provide a near-silent autofocus that is both swift and precise. Whether you're capturing split-second action or fine details in a landscape, the autofocus system ensures you won't miss a beat.
Customize your zoom experience with the innovative rotating zoom ring, which allows for smooth and precise adjustments. The zoom torque adjustment feature enables you to set the tension to your liking, from loose for quick zooming to firm to prevent lens creep, giving you complete control over your composition.
Bokeh enthusiasts will appreciate the exquisite out-of-focus quality produced by the 9 rounded diaphragm blades. This design creates rounded specular highlights and beautifully smooth bokeh, making your subjects pop against a creamy, blurred background.
In summary, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is a testament to Canon's commitment to high-quality, advanced, reliable, durable, and innovative optics. It's a top-tier choice for photographers who demand the best in telephoto zoom lenses, offering a combination of performance features that stand out in the field of professional photography.
