Have had this for several months now. Sharp fast focus with os. Can't beat it for the price. Very happy with the guality of the build and of the resulting images. Using it on a Nikon D90 and will keep using it when I finally get a new Nikon Digital SLR.

I'm very impressed with the picture quality of this lens. I did the focus adjustments with the Sigma lens dock when it arrived. Only minor adjustments needed.

I primarily purchased this lens for video use, and according to the manufactures description it was supposed to be super quiet, but you can clearly hear the auto focus and lens stabilization in the audio recording unless you are using a microphone placed far away from the camera, so using a microphone mounted to the hot shoe is not an option, unless you like to hear mechanical noises in your film. For photos it is great, but I already had a lot of good lenses for photos that made noise in my video. When Sigma said the lens was quiet I expected it to be super quiet like the Canon STM lens I own, but sadly it is not. As to whether or not I would recommend this lens depends on whether it is to be used for photo or video applications. I would recommend for photos, but would recommend against it for video.

Excellent high performing general purpose zoom. Stellar for portraits, close in nature, landscapes, close in sports--especially poorly lit indoors, Great Close Focusing for that near Macro shot you want of details on objects, plaques and descriptive signs for documentation--better than notes. Stabilization is excellent. The only downside is weighs a pound, which is due to the f2.8-f4 max aperture. The performance proves to be worth it, but it does seem to get heavier as the day goes along.

After trying out several different lenses, I settled on the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM because of it being a good middle ground. There are others that are sharper, but more expensive. There are also others that are less expensive, but you sacrifice image quality, aperture, image stabilization, etc. I always managed to get images that had good sharpness, contrast, and it works fairly decent in low light situations too (not astonishing, but more than good enough).

I really like this lens and I recommend it to anyone as a kit upgrade. It checks all the boxes of high quality glass: great sharpness, great contrast and colors and very little distortion. The focus seems to be spot on, right out of the box, I haven't had to connect it to the dock to adjust anything so far. It is quite heavy for the size but feels well built. I have read elsewhere about potential lens creep in either this or the older models of this lens but I haven't experienced it in my lens. I can see, however, that due to the weight of the lens, it takes just a minimum force to extend the lens barrel when pointing down. But it hasn't been a problem so can't hold it against the lens. It's a must buy for a standard range zoom with high aperture.

It works OK, but it's not like a prime. The new Sigma lens do a better job in terms speed and resolution.

This is the lens that's on my camera 90% of the time. It's tack sharp and light enough to be comfortable out in the field. Not a bad range either for a walking around lens.

Love the sigma lenses. After loosing several lenses I had to an accident and not finding anything I wanted to replace them with for a fast trip out of town I ordered this one that I had heard good things about- It worked out every well. Macro a big plus

I've never had a macro lens before, rather I shot macro pics with a reversed lens. I'm on my way to a butterfly exhibit and looking forward to it with great expectation.

The lens works great; the optical stabilizer seems to work exceptionally well. My only issue--not the fault of the lens but due to my lack of photography knowledge--is the inability to photograph very small objects. Unless your subject is very small (less than about 2 inches in its longest dimension), I would recommend this lens. This lens was recommended by an Adorama consultant via on-line chat. Looks like I should have gone with a 100mm macro. Oh well, live and learn.

This is the second lens I received. The first one had issues with focusing on my Pentax KX. It tended to be blurry on anything 24mm and below and would back focus occasionally. I sent it back for another one and this isn't as bad but still back focuses quite a bit. I called Sigma to see what I could do and they told me that it isn't quite as compatible with Pentax. They said to send it to them along with my camera and they would calibrate it. I still haven't decided if I want to do this or just send the lens back to Adorama. When it does focus correctly, it's very sharp but I'd say over half of the ones I did take were soft.

Purchased for my T6i with great results beyond my expectations! Build quality is excellent, connection ring is made of metal. Produces tack sharp pictures with great bokeh. Have some weight to it, heavier than the camera body not a problem for me. Zoom and focus ring feel smooth autofocus is quiet. This is my go to lens for all my purposes. Macro works great to be just inches from touching the glass. I highly recommend this lens if you're looking for great focal length, big aperture range, macro all on a budget. I also recommend using the USB dock to calibrate if necessary.

I found this lens to be a very good if not perfect replacement for my Canon 18-55mm kit lens. Sharp and much better f-stop range than the 18-55mm. Really like the f/2.8-f4 of the Sigma 17-70mm versus the f/3.5-f/5.6 of the Canon 18-55mm and the Sigma provides more focal length range. Macro works very well.

Very good quality lens for my Canon Rebel T6s, for the price. I deliberated for a while and viewed several YouTube videos comparing the Sigma to the Canon 18-55 mm stock lens, which is much cheaper. I believe in getting the very best lens you can afford. No matter how great the features of your camera, if your lens is not as good, your photographs will also suffer. The Sigma lens is heavier than the Canon stock lens, but, even mounted on my T6s, the total weight is still quite light compared to my older Nikon D300, which weighs about 2 lbs with lens.

This is a very nice lens. It's great in low light situations due to the f2.8 aperture. Images are sharp. Very nice!

This thing is tack sharp. I have set up to calibrate the lens with my camera and it was spot on. At longer focal lengths it can't be beat.

An upgrade from a basic kit lens; this lens will easily justify the upgrade price. I use the lens for portraits, short zoom shits and night sky shots.

The lens used old technology for zoom. It is either in AF or M mode. Does not allow DMF function with the Sony a6300 Focus motor is noisy. Not all focus modes available with MC11

I was looking for a good travel lens that would cut down on what I carry. This lens is so much sharper than the kit lens. I haven't used it too much yet. I did get a USB dock for free with the lens, so it was interesting to see if the lens need any adjustments. The lens was "tuned" just right, so I don't even need the dock anymore. This lens is very sharp in the middle apertures. I look forward to using it more.

When shooting indoor sports photography such as basketball, hockey, boxing, water sports and so forth, there are two possible approaches to getting sharp images at the peak of the action.
Fantastic Lens
By KEVIN F.
All I can say about this lens is WOW. I mean really WOW! On a crop camera this 17-70 gives the same field of view as a 28-112mm lens does on a full frame - remarkably close to the 24-105 so popular on the full frame cameras. I bought this lens and during the return period, also borrowed a friend's Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6. My goal was to compare the two and decide which one to buy. They were both very similar with the Canon winning on the overall feel. It was slightly faster with the AF, The Can...

Excellent Lens
By Ron C.
In one review I read this lens was designated as an "entry-level lens"...I beg to differ. So far its performance is superb and its construction quality is great. Some may complain about its weight, but, apparently, I do not fit in with the current main-stream opinions that lighter is better. I avoid feather-weight equipment which moves when I blink my eyes. In an early test of the lens at an event, I focused on a person from about 20' away, full shot. When I inspected this frame at full ...

SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM
The most important features for a standard zoom lens for digital single lens reflex camera is to achieve high image quality, to meet the needs in various occasions and to be handy and compact.
The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM will clear away all the general concerns, such as a short minimum focusing distance, not a long enough focal length for telephoto shooting and a small aperture value. Mainly used for general-purpose photography, this everyday lens covers a range equivalent to 25.5-105mm on a 35mm camera. It's surprisingly compact in size for a large-aperture lens that opens up to F2.8. Great for treasured snapshots of travel or family occasions, it also handles shots that are a little bit more creative. Designed to be the kind of lens you carry around with you all the time, it delivers simplicity and is so user-friendly it's sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users.
Contemporary line can handle all sorts of photo opportunities
Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Featuring the very latest technology, and combining optical performance with compactness, the Contemporary line covers a wide range of needs. Incorporating the very latest technology in these lenses, Sigma has solved the difficult problem of keeping size and weight low without compromising optical performance. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM is the first product from the Contemporary line. Featuring a wide zoom range, the lens has a focal range equivalent to 25.5-105mm on a 35mm lens.
Excellent for macro photography
This lens' minimum focusing distance is 22cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.8. At 70mm, the working distance becomes 5.52cm. When it comes to telephoto, it can shoot pictures with a similar sensation to a macro lens. Also, without the need to change the lens, it enables photographers to take a close up pictures of subjects such as jewelry and flowers. In order to secure a clear field of view, the design of this lens is very thorough, even down to the precise position of the engraved letters on the lens.
30% Smaller Than Conventional Models
For a which is used lens used in everyday situations, the small size makes a big difference. By incorporating a smaller OS unit and optimizing the structure and power distribution of optical elements, the lens barrel has now become more compact. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, the new compound material TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has high affinity to metal parts, is introduced for the lens barrel. It results in better durability of the parts and smaller zoom rings and scale rings. The dimension of this lens is 30% smaller than their conventional models.
Superior Image Quality Throughout The Entire Zoom Range
This lens incorporates 2 FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and 3 aspherical glass lenses including double sided aspherical lens. By optimizing the power alignment of the lens, both chromatic aberration of magnification and axial chromatic aberration have been corrected. From infinity to macro, it achieves superior image quality through entire zoom range. This lens offers extraordinary expressive power and is capable of surpassing the requirement of the rigorous checking process of Sigma's new MTF measuring system
Large maximum aperture of F2.8
The aperture value is F2.8 at the wide end (17mm), and is F4 at the telephoto end (70mm). The bright viewfinder aids focusing and composition of images. The fast apertures also offer useful functions such as fast shutter speeds to prevent an object from being blurred and ensuring a smooth bokeh in the background.
Flare and ghosting conscious design
In order to achieve high rendering on this flagship lens, flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured from an early stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incident light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.
Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm
The 7 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image
Hyper Sonic Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring. With the enhanced AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved.
Brass made bayonet mount
This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.
Ease of use
The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the design of the lens cap and AF / MF changeover switch has been improved.
Newly developed "USB DOCK" exclusively for new product lines
Based on these new lines, Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA OptimizationPro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.
Evaluation with Sigma's own MTF measuring system "A1"
Sigma used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, they've now developed their own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of Sigma's quality control inspections. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM will all be checked using this "A1" before they are shipped.
"Made in Japan"
All Sigma's manufacturing - right down to molds and parts - is carried out under an integrated production system, entirely in Japan. Sigma is now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely "made in Japan". They like to think their products are somehow imbued with the essence of their homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people.
