I have always lusted after a really good wide angle lens and on changing my Nikon kit recently to the Sony A7 iv, was wanting a wide angle as I am doing more landscape and with a trip to the Arctic upcoming. I tested a number of wide angle options and the 16mm, 18mm, 200mm, just did not quite do it. The 12mm at the bottom end of the range is incredible. I have regularly wanted to photograph landscape and building when I simply cannot get far enough back, this lens does it. Also for wide landscape it works well.

This is THE best ultra wide angle lens for the Sony a7 line. Beautiful optics, clear and crisp with zero distortion, especially near the edges.

Coming I from nikon, this replaces my old sigma 8-16mm - its fast enough for extreme sports and street/architecture and feels a lot more professional than others, not so much distortion and the verticals aren't a problem, can suck for lens flate, but its a super wide so more my problem for not checking for it, especially when using flash.

I bought this lens for taking picture's in museums and other areas where it's useful to be able to take a closeup of something or to encompass the whole item at very close range. This lens is a fantastic addition to my collection and expands my capabilities of taking shots both indoors and outside, a very worthwhile investment.

I have used this daily for a month now. It is light, compact, extremely sharp with only minor fall off towards the far edges - and a joy to use.

Possibly my favourite lens!! It is well made, robust and produces excellent results in some challenging situations.

I've had this lens for one month. Works well up close. Works well in low light. I've taken handheld pictures after dark. Focuses fast and precise. Not too heavy to lug around all day. I usually hand carry my camera, and even when hanging from its leash, it doesn't feel too heavy. It allows you to take pictures of entire structures, even when you're in a tight spot. You can photograph people from head to toe from just a few feet away and take portraits from just inches. You need to have the budget to buy this lens, but if you can afford it, it's worth it.

I bought this for a photographic travel holiday in Asia and, with the 24 - 70mm +70 - 200mm it gives a full range of focal lengths in three lenses. It is light and sharp.

Had this lens for more than a year now and it replaced the Canon 11-24mm f4 Canon. I just lost 1 mm in the wide angle side but gained in reduced size and weight. Surprised about the quality for night photography at 12 mm, f 4, 30 seconds and ISO 4000 with tripod. Stars showed not noticeable comma of at the edge of the frame using Sony a&RIII.

I have had this lens for several months and I love it. It's super wide and you can use it for many kinds of photography. It has very little distortion at 12mm, but most surprisingly, you can use it up close. The specs say that its minimal focus distance is just under 12 inches, but I found that you can use it down to about 5 inches and still get a very clear image. It's almost a macro at this distance. The only drawback so far is that the auto focus struggles in low light. That's not unexpected, but it is a bit tricky to overcome. I suggest that if you are new to a super wide lens, you should experiment with shooting close up to some of your favorite subjects. This style of shooting will draw a lot of character out of faces and objects that appear flat with other lenses. Also, ask for advice from more experienced photographers and you will get a lot more enjoyment out of this wonderful lens.

This is certainly a large & heavy lens, but then again so is every lens in this category. Well built, and (of course) works great on native Sony FE bodies. Surprisingly sharp wide open. This is a specialist lens, so not very versatile, but if you need 12mm, this is the best way to get it!

Overall this is a great kit! The lens is an amazing lens. It's so sharp throughout all f stops. And the ultrawide field of view allows for some very creative photos and great perspectives. The lens cap holder is a great little add on as well as the cleaning kit. The cleaning kit is awesome. The only thing I don't really think I have a use for is the lens shade. Other than that it's a perfect kit!

This lens has been phenomenal for sports photography. Not quite as fast as I would like only being an F4 but the 12mm is wide and doesn't give that fisheye distortion. I would pay extra to have this in a 2.8.

F4 is fine, given the wide-angle nature of this lens. The only down -side is the lack of filter thread. And it’s expensive.

I found this lense is smaller than other zoom lense of same range, cheaper with acceptable quality. However, it is difficult to find a filter for it.

I am very please with the performance of this lens and with its relatively light weight. It allows me to carry two lenses on long trips which was problematic previously. However, I received a non US version. So, beware.

This lens is enormous and weighs a ton. Can't complain about what it does though. Takes mighty nice photos. Just be aware that it's big & heavy.

Really impressed with this lens for landscape photos. Good sharpness edge to edge and no more distortion than you would expect with this focal range.

very good lens but a lota distortion and sharpness deteriorates 'sharply' at corners.

This lens was supposed to replace my 16-35/4. There are many situations when 16mm just isn’t wide enough. And at 24 zoom end I could just crop to 35 mm if needed. It is sharp, feels light relative to its size. Well balanced on FF body. My only complaint is bulging front element which does not allow protection by filters. For me, protective filters are part of the lens. They sacrificed themselves many times in the past to save my lenses. Can’t help thinking if Sony, the current leader in pushing the envelope could not come up with some innovative solution. Like the hood that would have a thread for filters. At wide end, the lens stretches people off the center of the frame a lot. For landscape and architecture it is fine. For general use the 16-35 is then preferable. It is also smaller, less conspicuous than this one. But I already got used to what 12-24 can do. So I decided to keep both.

The ultra wide angle FE 12-24mm lens is great for architecture, real estate or landscape photography, where a faster apeature may not be enssential. The lens produces sharp/contrasty images with minimal distrotion (when corrected in post) The AF is fast and acurate and is of the silent type with no noise when motor is working. Slightly pricy but it's the one of the few (or maybe the only) native lens option that you'll have for 12mm coverage.

I'd been wanting this length of zoom for a while and coming from Canon I was used to the heavy glass of their equivalent lens so I was very nicely surprised when it arrived and it's so much lighter. It's optics are superb and I'm so pleased to have made the purchase. It's a great lens to have in your arsenal and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can produce with it on future assignments.

FANTASTIC SHARP ULTRA-WIDE ZOOM LENS!
By Christoph_65
My first ultra wide zoom in this focal length. In the past I have only used ultra wide primes. The biggest drawbacks with ultra wide lenses is the tendency for flare and ghosting. This lens at all focal lengths has very little if any, even shooting into the sun. The images are so sharp corner to corner and has amazing clarity and contrast. I shoot mainly stills, but it has a wider throw for manual focus video if that's your thing. The light weight body of the lens makes it a wonderful lens to...

This compact 12–24 mm ultra-wide-angle zoom lens features the shortest focal lengths available in any full-frame E-mount lens, with stunning corner-to-corner G Lens resolution at all apertures. It is an excellent choice for dynamic landscape and architecture photography. Outstanding mobility and quiet, fast, precise autofocus make it ideal for shooting movies as well as stills.
Refined ultra-wide-angle optics capture expansive scenes with outstanding resolution and clarity.
A new design significantly reduces overall length and front element size while maintaining the highest possible optical performance. And it weighs a mere 20 ounces (565 grams).
Covering the widest range available in any full-frame E-mount lens, the FE 12-24mm F4 G zoom offers unprecedented expressive potential for landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, and other expansive subjects. Refined ultra-wide-angle optics capture sweeping scenes with dynamic perspectives plus outstanding resolution and clarity.
Four aspherical elements in an innovative optical design effectively suppress optical aberrations that can be problematic in wide-angle lenses. This lens achieves excellent resolution that is fully consistent with the G Lens concept throughout its zoom range.
One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED glass elements are strategically deployed to minimize chromatic aberration. Effective reduction of chromatic aberration contributes to improved sharpness and clarity throughout the image area.
This lens features an advanced inner-focus mechanism driven by Sony's Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) system for fast, accurate AF lock-on as well as smooth, quiet operation.
A customizable focus hold button provides extra control versatility, while dust and moisture resistant design means reliable operation even in challenging conditions.
Sony's original Nano AR Coating suppresses spurious reflections that can cause flare and ghosting in backlit and other challenging lighting situations, for consistently high contrast and clarity. Freedom from flare over a wide range of incident light angles provides greater framing and composing flexibility. (1. Nano AR Coating / 2. Glass / 3. Transmitted light)
A refined optical design significantly reduces the overall length of the lens barrel as well as the diameter of the front element size while maintaining the highest possible optical performance at all focal lengths and aperture settings. Compact dimensions and low 20-ounce (565-gram) weight make this lens ideal wherever portability and mobility are required.
Advantages for movie recording
With a constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range this lens makes it possible to achieve consistent exposure. Advanced AF with outstanding speed and precision contributes to reliable subject tracking at wide angles for impressive movie perspectives.
Smooth, versatile operation
A customizable focus hold button that can be assigned other functions adds an extra margin fingertip control, and an AF/MF switch sets the lens's operating mode to suit the situation. Manual mode focusing is fast and responsive with almost unnoticeable lag.
High reliability in harsh conditions
The overall design of this lens is dust and moisture resistant for extra protection and reliable operation in challenging environments. Shoot with confidence in light rain or windy conditions.
A built-in lens hood effectively blocks incident light that might cause flare and ghosting, maintaining optimum clarity and contrast even at the lens's widest angles. The supplied lens cap slips right over the built-in hood.
