I just received my lens 10 minutes ago. You could hear and feel a rattle from within the lens as soon as I opened it. When I took it out of the wrapping you could see multiple spots on the inside the lens. I know this because after whipping the lens you can still see them under the glass of the lens. I put the lens on my camera. It fits and works, but at this point, I am unsure in a real video shoot if there will be any issues or how long it will be issue-free. I have a shoot tomorrow. I will update this review as I get real use out of it.

Hated the Slinger Slinger Soft Lens Case Medium, 6.5" High x 86mm Diameter, Black - They sent the wrong size for the lens. Loved the lens tho!

This gem provides the best of all worlds. Fast constant f/2.8 aperture, long reach, great build, small size, stellar images. If you like 70-200mm results but hate carrying the lens, try this Tamron. It fits in the same holster bag as a 24-70mm and weighs less than any of the 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. No frills simple design with no external controls is great for me. I'm normally shooting this lens wide open at high shutter speeds so the lack of OIS ("VC") does not matter at all. Being small and nondescript looking makes this a great option for travel versus a "big white" style lens. Lens AF keeps up with tracking in the a9 II and resolution keeps up with the a7R IV. This lens does trading card style portraits on the sidelines then captures fast action in the game.

I always loved 70-200 f/2.8 class lenses...but hated the bulk. When this lens came out, I was pretty fascinated. After buying it...it met my expectations. The size and weight is great (although it is still a decent size lens...it is nothing compared to other 70-200 class lenses). The image quality is spectacular and the focusing is really excellent. For the price, it is a no brainer. I would love the new Sony 70-200 2.8 GM ii BUT that price is tough to swallow and I doubt the images it would provide me would be that much better than what I get out of this Tamron.

Lens is sharp and lightweight for a 2.8 aperture 70-180. The only thing missing is optical stabilization on lens so just have to watch the shutter speed.

I own a couple Tamron lenses for my Sony and this is another essential to have. I'm traveling often so I was really looking for a telephoto lens that had a lower fstop, yet was lightweight. This lens fits my needs. For weddings, proposals, and nature photography where I'd like to bring the background closer. I highly recommend this lens.

The color on my a7iii always seemed a little dull. No! it's just that I had a crappy lens. Once I started on acquiring the Tamron trinity all that changed. I absolutely love! this lens, It's tack sharp and the colors are vibrant, it's light weight and also fast ( f2.8 ). The images I'm getting from this lens are Awesome!, I have a friend with the equivalent from Sony ( 70-200mm f4 ) G master, and he's jealous. The auto focus isn't as insane as the other members of the trinity, but it greatly improves when I use it on my a7iv, which has better auto focus than the a7iii. The focus and zoom rings are very smooth, I've been having a blast! with this lens. I highly recommend it.

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 is an affordable, light weight, and compact lens capable of producing expensive images way better than its price tag. Fast and accurate focus with nice and creamy out of focus surrounding makes this lens an awesome choice for portrait and wedding photography.

This completes my Tamron trifecta (17-28, 28-75, 70-180 all f2.8). I went from having a hodgepodge of 5+ different lenses down to 3 light weight, good for lowlight, same outer ring (67mm) for filters, and a range that doesn?t make me feel lacking. This lens not only allows for that incredible ?buttery? (god why is that the best descriptor for this) background, and as an added bonus if you buy now you will also get a macro lens at 70mm on manual focus!?! Whawhawhat? That?s right folks, this lens covers a lot of needs whether you are shooting interviews or products you?re good. Nuf said.

Love this lens. Every bit as sharp as the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75. Really fast and accurate focus! Can?t go wrong with this lens.

Great lens. Have owned and used as a photojournalist for two years and in most cases, this is my go-to lens. I've used it for portraits as well as documentary photography.

I purchased this lens because the Sony 70-200 is so dang expensive and heavy. My thoughts so far? Pros: it?s light and easy to carry around, it?s sharp, it?s quiet on auto focus. Cons: that extra 20mm lost on the telephoto end are sorely missed, you can?t really tell how good your pictures are until bringing them up in post (maybe that?s my a7iii though), you can?t use a tele converter with it and it kind of feels like a toy. (But that?s why it?s light!) Overall I?m happy with it. I may still purchase the Sony version, really debating on that.

I?ve owned the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens for a couple years now, so I pretty much knew what to expect with this lens. Even so, I?m shocked at the consistent focusing (the first job I used it on, literally 100% of the shots were in razor-sharp focus) and the quality of images it produces. I?d been using my Canon 70-200 f/2.8L adapted to my a7RIII for a few years before this purchase, and it easily stands up to the quality of that lens. Considering Sigma still doesn?t offer an e-mount 70-200, this is really your only option if you don?t want to spend over twice as much on the Sony 70-200 f/2.8.

This lens has nice range, great light, and is sharp. I am really glad I got this lens. I do wish I had more reach, but not like 200mm; more like 400 or 600. I know there isn't a 70-600 2.8 though, so this is perfect for me.

This has quickly become one of my favorite lenses. The image you get from it is beautiful. My budget 85 prime suddenly doesn't seem as sharp.

Awesome lens! Sharp in the middle and to the corners. Very quick AF. Light weight and not as bulky as the Sony70-200mm F4 with better results. Honestly, not as sharp as the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 but very, very close, much lighter, and for the money hard not to buy the Tamron. Possibly the best lens they make in the Sony lineup and a welcome addition to my bag.
Very very very impressed

Tamron adds another premium full-frame lens to their lineup with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens. This compact and lightweight lens has a 67mm filter diameter and an f/2.8 maximum aperture for working under low light conditions while also giving the user greater control over depth of field. The lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras and has a minimum object distance (MOD) of 33.5 inches. It has a Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motor focus mechanism for a quicker and quieter autofocus. It has glass-molded and hybrid aspherical elements that help in reducing spherical aberrations and distortions to yield sharper images. Each lens element has a Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2 (BBAR-G2) Coating to further suppress flares, internal reflections, and ghosting, while also improving color fidelity even under harsh lighting conditions. Have a versatile full-frame lens for various tasks with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens.
The 70-180mm F/2.8 features a compact and lightweight design with a 67mm filter diameter, the same as Tamron's highly esteemed 17-28mm F/2.8 (Model A046) and the 28-75mm F/2.8 (Model A036). The optical construction includes several special lens elements that contribute to the lens's overall superb imaging performance. Its very short 33.5" MOD (Minimum Object Distance) expands overall versatility. The lens utilizes Tamron's newly developed VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism that produces an autofocus drive that's quieter and quicker than ever before.
Now, the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056) telephoto zoom lens joins the lineup to complete the Dream Team Trinity of high-speed zoom lenses for full-size mirrorless cameras. A key advantage of this series is their portability. The three models altogether weigh surprisingly little, just 62.8 oz. Featuring light weight, compact size, a fast F/2.8 aperture and superb image quality, Tamron's Dream Team is easy to carry, easy to deploy and easy to enjoy.
A floating system that uses two high-speed, high-precision VXD units with advanced electronic control is also used. This innovative design produces clear and beautiful images of all objects from near to far and at the same time helps reduce size and weight. In addition, its exceptional quietness enables low noise shooting in silent settings. Active athletes and moving vehicles are among the subjects commonly photographed with telephoto zoom lenses. The enhanced, highly responsive focus features of the 70-180mm F/2.8 enable following a subject's movements to provide users with a whisper-quiet, high-precision shooting experience, not just for still images but also video.
The 70-180mm F/2.8 has an optical construction of 19 elements in 14 groups. It includes a total of six XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements combined, and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and hybrid aspherical lens elements combined. Special lens elements are generously and optimally arranged to correct chromatic aberration and maintain very high-resolution performance from edge-to-edge.
Tamron developed its first-ever linear motor AF drive focus mechanism, VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), especially for the 70-180mm F/2.8. While operating faster than ever before, the drive also maintains positional accuracy down to 0.005mm (0.0002"), less than one tenth the width of a human hair! This provides unprecedented fast and precise AF performance.
The 70-180mm F/2.8 features the same 67mm filter diameter as Tamron's other lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras including the 17-28mm F/2.8 (Model A046), a fast ultra-wideangle zoom, and the 28-75mm F/2.8 (Model A036), a fast standard zoom, as well as the close-focusing prime lens series (20mm, 24mm and 35mm). This uniformity significantly reduces cost and trouble when working with PL, ND and other filters. Even the front lens caps are the same size, eliminating the hassle of sorting caps when switching lenses. These features combine to produce a highly convenient and mobile system that adds more fun to photography.
The new 70-180mm F/2.8 lens has a MOD of 33.5" throughout the entire zoom range. This is astonishingly close for a large aperture telephoto zoom lens. The short MOD paves the way for impressive telephoto shooting at a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.6 at the 180mm telephoto end. Moreover, a floating component equipped with two VXD linear focus mechanisms maintains high image quality while effectively controlling aberrations so that the 70-180mm F/2.8 ensures great image quality even at close-up. To effectively suppress optical aberrations, this lens features a floating mechanism that ensures great image quality at distances as short as 33.5".
Note: At the 70mm setting only, it is possible to shoot closer than the specified MOD of 33.5" (as close as 10.6") when manual focus (MF) is set on the camera. However, results may be less than optimal since image quality decreases in peripheral areas.
