Came from using Sony 50mm F/1.8 What a big difference in weight and quality of the image. I rarely shoot wide open so having F/1.2 isn't a big deal. My main concern was image quality and sharpness. This lens has that checked off with ease. Great walk-around lens, I can do semi telephoto or environmental images. Added bonus of the aperture ring for video work.

Bought this to complement my other prime lenses - the sharpness wide open is amazing. Whilst this is an expensive lens I made the purchase on the basis that it will suite the A7riv when I can afford to buy one.

This is my second Zeiss 1.4 50mm prime; due to the weight (bit heavy side) I replaced with 1.8 55mm, but I had to go back to my old friend! I travel a lot; I use it with 7RIII and the duo is inseparable!! Superb sharpness from edge to edge; excellent in low light situations, and it is literally the best bokeh producing lens. Highly recommend!!

This lens is a superb, quality, solid 50mm I use on the A7s3 to film. BUT, the eye autofocus on this lens is crazy jittery. I have adjusted all settings on camera but have come to two conclusions. Either this lens is in dire need of a Firmware upgrade to work with the new AF in the Sony A7s3 or I have a faulty lens, which I need to get tested by Sony. Lock down has stopped me from doing so but I will once I get the chance. That problem a side this lens is a solid 50mm!!!

i bought this lens, very expensive - the noise of the focusing motor makes it practically impossible to use for video

I was so happy with this lens until 2/3's of the lens detached fell off and pulling out the two ribbon cables with no stress on the lens when it happened. I am so bummed this lens was incredible

Just what i was looking for! Solid build, beautiful predictable focus, nice clear photos, and beautiful easy to use lens. If you’re looking for the best 50mm for sony cameras… this is it. Definitely recommend implementing this lens into your arsenal of glass.

I bought this 2 months ago and used it on my A7R2. It’s a great combination and deliver good picture quality at F1.4, great sharpness at focus center and bokeh at surrounding. Ease of manual f value adjustment while using A mode. Switching button between AF and MF on the lens is also very simple to reach. This is convenient while I want to use manual focus with less depth of field. This is definitely a heavy lens but really deliver great picture, which my 24-70mm F4 couldn’t compete at all.

I'm in love with this lens! The IQ and built quality are simply amazing. I use it with my A7III and it works flawlessly. Highly recommended. I was debating between this one and the 55mm (money wasn't an issue) and went with this one.

I purchased this lens several months ago. I tried using it for baby pictures and had a very hard time getting it to focus. It would either hunt or just stick in an out of focus condition. I tried using it yesterday at a family photo shoot. Same issues. I switched to my trustworthy 24-70mm and had no problems. Not a fan of this thing. I am using a Sony a7r III.

This lens is exceptionally good and comes with "pixie dust" to add magic to your images.... ;) Seriously, it is a great option for the 50-ish focal length, and I prefer the IQ from this lens to that of the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 which I also own. The lens is a bit heavy, though it is worth the excess weight to have the best tool for the job. Highly recommended!

OK, so 1400 dollars lens right? right, should be made really well. I get it's big its large etc. but if it's supposedly the best on the market For Sony. should it not be silent AF. when it focuses, it makes a whirring noise.... like what, it should not make this noise, I called Sony and they told me that it shouldn't do this. however I went to my local camera shop and tried their lens, and it makes the same noise. so clearly it's just the lens, because it's moving so much heavy glass... put a better motor in it? like come on... so if you're looking for a dead silent focus this is not it.... aperture ring is also easily accidentally moved, which I find annoying

I had my first shoot with this lens, along with my A7III and the images produced are absolutely beautiful. My model was over the moon with them. I would recommend this lens to any portrait photographer, whatever their experience.

Before using Sony I was a Nikon shooter for 38 years. There are no 50mm f1.4 like the one made by Sony. Amazingly sharp, Super fast AF, well built. The only "negative" is that is is heavy when compared to the any other 50mm f1.4. If you are a Sony shooter, this is the lens to get.

I have the Sony a7iii and this is us find a piece of glass as you’d ever want to own. The background bokeh is ethereal and in the front subject is razor sharp. This lens separates you from the rest!

I bought this lens and it worked great with Sony A7iii, but returned it because it was too heavy along with the camera. I love Sony cameras...but the lens with bigger aperture are way too big and heavy. Could you make them a bit more portable? Thank you!!

On the Sony a7Riii, this is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever had the pleasure to use. I primarily photograph landscapes, but I also particularly enjoy photographing derelict structures. Because I value sharpness and detail above most other considerations, for most of the pictures I take, I use a tripod and focus stack; in addition, many of my photographs are focus stacked panoramas using a panorama clamp. This lens has enabled me to obtain stellar results. I find the contrast very pleasing, with very little chromatic aberration if any at all, and easily corrected with software. Since this is the first normal lens I've used with any consistency in a long time (prior to that primarily using a primary wide-angle lense) it is opened up a new world of photographic possibilities for me. I also find myself much more likely to attempt handheld photos of both distant and closer subjects. It balances well on the camera body, and for handheld shots I find myself using a completely different (and to me easier and more comfortable) hand configuration than I did with an older and bulkier mirrored DSLR: the area between the first and second fingers on my left handle provides a cradle underneath the lens (which fits nicely because of the beveled nature of the lens as it meets the camera body) and my right hand uses the standard hand grip in the normal manner. Altogether, I am very happy with this lens, its' size does not provide the least impediment to my photography: I highly recommend it without reservation. Where professional photography meets superior technology, the Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA Lens stands out as a high-performance prime lens. This lens, a hallmark of the esteemed ZEISS brand, boasts a large F1.4 maximum aperture, delivering exceptional contrast and resolution.
The lens's bright F1.4 maximum aperture ensures excellent performance in low light conditions, while the 11-blade aperture and aspheric elements contribute to a stunning bokeh effect. The lens is constructed with 12 Elements in 9 Groups, including two aspherical elements - a high-precision AA (advanced aspherical) type and an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element. These elements work together to maintain the lens's outstanding contrast and resolution right to the image periphery.
The ZEISS T* coating, a pioneering technology by Carl Zeiss, enhances the lens's performance by virtually eliminating lens flare, internal reflection, and light scattering. This results in superior contrast and resolution, delivering high-quality images with uniform excellence right to the image edges.
The lens's 50mm wide aperture and Planar design make it an ideal choice for most photographers. The advanced aspheric and ED glass elements reduce spherical aberration and distortion to a minimum, ensuring a flat image plane consistent with the Planar name.
The lens also features a Ring Drive SSM for fast, quiet, and precise focusing. An aperture ring with a selectable click ON/OFF switch and an AF/MF switch for direct auto/manual focus control offer additional convenience and control to the photographer.
Finally, the lens is designed to be dust and moisture resistant, providing robust reliability for shooting in a wide range of conditions. With the Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA Lens, you can capture sharp, high-contrast images with outstanding resolution, whether you're shooting in bright daylight or low light conditions.
