Amazing Lens

Bought this lens from Adorama 2 weeks ago, shipping and delivery was quick and easy. Already used for one baseball game and one rugby match. Wasn't sure what to expect but results were amazing. Still getting use to the autofocus with my D850, a little more challenging than the 70-200mm zoom but managed 70-80% keeper rate. Great detail and color shooting wide open. I am very pleased with this lens and highly recommend the 300mm f/2.8G. Actually got this version before Nikon issues a redesign and raises the price like they did with the 400.

Amazing lens

I waited years before buying this lens, primarily because it's pricey. It's worth it, AF is instantaneous, detail is fantastic and bokeh is beautiful - subjects "pop" and appear 3d with this lens. It accepts the 1.4 and 1.7 teleconverters very nicely too, no downside to using them. I don't have the 2x TC to test it with. Adorama's 4% kickback was without question the best deal I could find. If you're looking at this lens, buy it here.

Awesome Lens. useless bundle

I love the lens! Although I was told via a chat with Adorama that the software would be on DVD. Its a digital download. When I called them they said that was wrong! And the lens align calibration tool has really small print, mostly useless.

Great lens for wildlife

This lens is very expensive, but is a true work of art. It has 11 elements in 3 groups. It is a joy to use and gives the most sharp, clear pictures I have ever taken. It works great also to stop motion. Rather heavy, but it has a lot of glass and metal.

Fast-focus, super-sharp telephoto

An extremely fast telephoto with amazing resolution, helped, no doubt, by very effective image stabilization. Used mostly for birding. Fast focus easily tracks birds on the wing; use all the focus dots for best results. Heavy, so this is not a lens for those who prefer to hand-hold, However, the weight is no problem when mounted on a sturdy gimble head and tripod, or when supported by a bean bag. I replaced the foot with one from RRS for more adjustable support on the gimble. Couldn't be more pleased with this lens. Very highly recommended.

Greatest lens in my bag

I put off buying this lens for sometime time simply because of the price tag. I finally made the purchase and honestly cant believe how great this lens is. Even with the 1.4 converter this lens is razor sharp. Absolutely a must for anyone who shoots sports.

Can't get much better

I upgraded from a 300 F4 without VR and will never look back. It's a little heavy, but the image quality more than makes up for it. Expedited shipping was a bonus!

great lens

great lens for wildlife. you can focus down to a little more than 7 feet from your subject. So if you can stealthily approach your subject this is a great lens. I think that this lens may be able to be used hand held, if you can really steady your self. But I think it would be best used on a really sturdy tripod

Everything I heard was true

The sharpest lens I have ever used. First day out of the box and the shots were just amazing. Focus speed is unsurpassed. I shoot a lot of outdoor action photography and this lens is amazing. The bokeh is out of this world. This thing is built like a tank.

Why didn't I get this sooner?

This lens replaced a 300 f4 and the difference is amazing. Coupled to a TC-20E it is a useful wildlife and bird lens without being too heavy. The autofocus is fast and I can even hand hold this thing for a little while on a bright day. With the TC-20 autofocus still works well and very little decline in sharpness. Plan on getting a really sturdy tripod to get the best out of this lens.

Great telephoto that fits in my backpack

I bought this lens to shoot sports and events. I have found that there are situations where my 200 f2.8 just does not have the reach I need to get the shot. I had the 200-400 zoom to cover these situations but the lens was to big to be practical a lot of the time. I now take this 300mm f2.8 with the TC14 and TC20 to get all the reach I need. I also carry a second body with the 24-70mm lens on it. These two cameras/lenses plus a speedlight 910 and the two teleconverters and a monopod all fit nicely in a ThinkTank Streetwalker Pro backpack. Things that are great include: - Very fast focusing - very sharp images - natural colors The cons are the obvious ones: - It is expensive - It is too heavy to hand hold for very long All in all I would recommend this lens for any serious photographer that needs a top notch tele that they can easily carry in a photo backpack with their other gear.

Outstanding Lens

I caught photography fever 3 years ago when I finally broke down and purchased a D7000 after years of frustration with point and shoots. I couldnt get the reach / quality I wanted for wildlife with a 70-200mm F/2.8 and TC20 III. After a year and a half of struggling with settings and shooting techniques I finally broke down and purchased this lens. It's everything I hoped for and then some. Image quality is fantastic and it works very well with my TC20 III. The only problem is it makes my 70-200 feel like a kit lens in comparison.

Money Well Spent

Professionally, I design rocket motors and warheads for a living. This lens is fast and sharp enough to photograph dangerous tests from a distance (preventing loss of equipment) should there be a failure, yet record test article details with sufficient sharpness and resolution to be scientifically useful for product development or failure analysis. Personally, I enjoy landscape and nature photography so when this lens isn't doing duty at work, I use it to advantage on field trips. Though most reviewers list "weight" in the cons category, weight is a function of front element size. It's an engineering impossibility to design a 300mm lens with a fast f2.8 aperature much lighter. I routinely hand-hold this lens at a 15th of a second and still achieve sharp results. Beyond that, this lens is very well corrected, sharp corner-to-corner and very robust in construction.

Nikon 300mm f/2.8G ED-IF II AF-S VR-II

This lens will be used for shooting sporting events and wildlife. While covering sporting events, the Memory Recall and Memory Lock functions make this lens indispensable. While the lens is heavy, it can still be handheld for short periods of time. For longer usage, a monopod offsets the weight quite nicely.

Great for fast moving distant subjects.

This product is, in one word, "superb" for my main applications which are typically distant fast moving subjects and lower light situations. Coupled to Nikon's new TC-20EIII teleconverter, this combo provides the high quality and high magnification needed in a portable hand-held package.

Superior Image Quality

Like all high-end lenses, the Nikon 300mm features a refined optical design to ensure superior image fidelity and maximum image quality. Equipped with three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and one aspherical lens element, this super telephoto lens offers excellent sharpness, color, and contrast, as well as highly reduced chromatic aberrations. A rounded, nine-blade diaphragm provides a more natural and pleasing appearance to out-of-focus areas—which means better, more attractive bokeh.

Fast, Efficient, and Silent Operation

Professional shooters need to keep up with the action, which requires a lens that responds quickly and enables them to focus and shoot at lightning speeds. Nikon’s 300mm super telephoto lens has three focusing modes for maximum AF control versatility, allowing you to quickly switch between auto and manual focus. It also features the AF Memory Recall to allow you to instantly return to a predetermined focus, and the Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate, and silent autofocusing.

Highly Durable Lens Construction

Highly resistant to dust and moisture, the Nikon 300mm lens features a rugged, magnesium die-cast barrel construction with a thick, protective meniscus front lens, offering maximum durability to professional photographers who work in the most rigorous shooting conditions.
