I had an earlier model of this lens - I loved it. I traded it in for this new version. This has the ability to manually over-ride the auto focus.

My lens (for Canon) just arrived today, and Adorama threw in the Tamron Tap-in console for free, which is cool. The lens is built like a tank and looks and feels like quality. the Image stabilization lets me shoot at 1/6th of a second (I haven't tried it lower yet) and the autofocus seems very fast. I can hear a few clicks and whirs while the stabilization warms up, but I had to have my ear right next to the lens to hear them, so, for all intents and purposes, it's silent. This is the most expensive lens I've bought so far. I live in a low-income country, so it was a big decision to shell out out for it, but my first impressions of the lens leave me delighted with it. Five stars from me, so far.

Great product. Had to wait a bit, since it was on a backorder, but Adorama, has kept me up to do date on the status, offered if I wanted to cancel, but it was worth the wait and delivered as expected. Great product. The quality of the pictures is amazing, straight out of the box, but with some learning curve, I am pretty sure, that I can get the quality even higher and better. Love this lens and very happy about the purchase. I have used macro, but this is my first full range macro lens and very exciting results.

This lens is fantastic! It's cheaper than Nikon's stabilized micro lens and every bit as good. Ok, well I haven't ever owned Nikon's version, but I've never wanted to after using this lens. It is very crisp and the stabilization works well. I've taken some of my best photos with it! Autofocus can be a bit slow at times, but that is true for all macro lenses. There's

-Great macro lens with true 1:1 -very sharp even at f2.8 and usable up to ~f22 -build quality is excellent on these new SP lenses -VC is good for hand-held, not sure how useful it is for macro shots (not sure any lens has useful VC at macro distances) -barrel distortion is essentially non-existent -focus is fairly quick (for a prime/macro) & quiet, recommend the limiter options to avoid hunting

For the Nikon F system, this one's focal length is a bit short (compared to the Tokina100mm ATX, Nikkor 105mm 2.8D, Sigma 150 OS, Sigma 105mm). Autofocus is fast and quiet. Vibration control is great where flash is not advisable (scares some bugs). Rendition is about the same as the Tokina (the best), better than the Nikkor 105mm 2.8D and the Sigma 150mm. Negative: heavy, with no tripod ring.

Only used it for a few days but am very pleased. Sharp clear pics, easy to use. Took pics from honeybees to the moon. They weren't all great but that was my own learning curve. Depth of field is short in this kind of lens so if I moved a bit it would go out of focus. No problem, use a faster shutter speed or use a tripod. The pics I didn't screw up are really good. Can't ask for more.....

Recently purchased the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di macro VC USD from Adorama. Can’t compare it to the Nikon 105mm lens because I’ve never used one. I’m sure it’s a great lens also. The Tamron 90mm is very sharp at f/11, focuses fairly fast and with decent accuracy on the D500. Sharpness is not bad at f/2.8 , but seems better between f/4-f/16 . With the sweep spot being around , or at f/11. Since it is a full frame lens, on the D500 it is equivalent to 135mm. I would recommend the Tamron 90mm to any amateur photographer like myself, who wants to start getting into macro. It’s well made, takes great close up images, looks and handles really nice. Four stars may not be completely fair on my part because I’m comparing it to the Lens I had been using for close ups, the Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm 1:2.8E FL ED. Which is awesome, but is about 3x the cost. Yes , the latest Tamron 90mm is a good lens for macro and you save some money. Adorama is a good place to purchase it.

Traditionally long lens shooters, my wife and I are new to macro lens photography and found this lens to be loads of fun. We can get get nearly touching distance to targets like sea shells, flowers or feathers but also get excellent macro definition from about a foot away from things that like to bite, sting, jump, lick or squirt. We can also take traditional shots across the room or across the field with exceptional clarity on target with a soft and smooth bokeh otherwise. Of all the macro type lenses I researched, this one appealed to me for price and function, and its use has been most enjoyable. I have no regrets with this purchase and would recommend without hesitation. We do use a sacrificial filter and have recently added a soft hood and lens mountable ring light. We use Nikon D850s and have an assortment of Tamron and Nikkor lenses and shoot mostly critters.

I have owned a Nikon 105mm f2.8 and now this lens. The fact that this is about 5 ounces lighter than the Nikon makes all the difference to me.- I find I'm not so distracted by the weight of the lens. The other aspect of this lens I like slightly better than the Nikon is the quality of the bokeh - it's very smooth and non-distracting for the most part. The one quibble I have with the lens is it hunts focus too much when in AF modus - I frequently have to switch to manual - whcih is easy enough to do - but I did not expect this.

I love this lens. It’s a wonderful macro lens for flowers, insects and small objects at 90mm. Its also a great long portrait lens since I don’t have an alternative fast prime. I’ve had no issues with the auto focus even up close and it produces beautiful bokeh in portraits.

I have a Nikkor 105mm Macro lens but wanted something that was newer and less expensive. This lens fits the bill. I have gotten great shots with close-ups and find it useful as a 90mm lens. Tamron has really raised the bar with this lens. It focuses quickly, and accurately. I really love this lens.

I am a serious amateur and most of my work is studio macro. Since getting this lens I have also used it in the field and even used it for a couple of portraits. Sharp as any macro lens in my arsenal, and sharper than my Nikkor Micro 105. Negligible chromatic aberration or distortion. Heavy, solid and looks gorgeous. Hasn't been off the camera since the day it arrived. At the price, it is a no-brainer... get this lens.

I primarily take pictures of food as hobby. That said this lens on my D850 is phenomenal. The focusing is very snappy, faster than some of my other primes for sure. Even without using the focus range limiting, the focus snaps into place. The minimum focus distance and 1:1 on the lens makes for shots filled with detail.

Amazing optics. Fast focus. Using on a Nikon D850. I'm completely sold on all the new Tamron lenses. I do this professionally full time, long time, many years with Nikon only lenses. I was a purist I guess you'd say. I just sold 90 percent of my Nikon artillery, replaced all with new Tamrons. Unbelievable. They have really stepped up their game. Fantastic lens. Fantastic build quality. Professional.

This lens is bigger and heavier than the Tamron 90mm macro it replaced. Compared to the old technology, the newer version delivers way better resolution and has vibration compensation for expanded handheld opportunities. The improvements are so good that Adorama has no used-equipment market for the previous iteration. While the Tamron upgrade reportedly yields a little less sharpness than the nearest comparable Nikon lens, the Tamron system costs less. Sigma is also competing in this niche market. Having choices is good. There is more to be learned about this lens, but I am very pleased with initial uses. Samples included.

A New Chapter in the Distinguished History of Tamron's 90mm Macro Lenses
A Legacy of Superior Optical Performance Now Reaches a New Plateau with Enhanced VC Functionality and Advanced Features
The SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO VC (Model F017) is the most recent release in a successful line of Tamron SP 90mm macro lenses. It redefines the best in advanced features and succeeds a legacy of superior optical performance.
XY-Shift compensation has been newly added to reinforce VC functionality, further improving image stabilization capabilities at any shooting distance from infinity to macro. Advancements in USD control software have also increased AF focusing speed and optimally fine-tuned for various framing conditions. Furthermore, a high standard of Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction has been added to prevent intrusion of dust or water droplets. Highly durable, Fluorine Coating is applied to the top element surface and efficiently prevents condensation of moisture and repels smudge-causing substances.
Meticulous craftsmanship is demonstrated in every detail of the exterior design of the newly transformed SP 90mm macro lens. The user can feel it in the exquisitely smooth texture of the metallic barrel.
Outstanding Depictive Capabilities and Anti-reflection Efficiency
The lens features an optical construction of 14 elements in 11 groups, including one LD (Low Dispersion) and two XLD (extra Low Dispersion) glass elements that in consonance help to control lateral and on-axis chromatic aberrations at a very high level of performance. A Floating System works in tandem with the optical construction to efficiently compensate for inherent aberration changes subject to varying distances. Therefore, this lens ensures seamless and outstanding depictive capabilities across the entire shooting range - close or far.
Flare or ghosting can be detrimental to a decisive shot. A combination of 2 types of coating - eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) layered on top of BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) - dramatically improves anti-reflection efficiency to deliver flawless, crystal clear images even against harsh beams of sunlight.
Commitment to Extending a Legacy of Bokeh with Elegance
Tamron has maintained a reputable standard for generations of 90mm macro lens models - all the way from manual focus lenses to the current AF models - for their exceptional depictive quality with spectacular bokeh. We also set a high standard to keep pace with the upward migration of digital cameras with advanced technical features and high pixel density.
Tamron has now balanced these polar traits at a higher level: raising resolution performance to a new standard of sharp images, while rendering a soft and smooth transition in gradation of blur-effect in background objects. Optical simulations were thoroughly conducted to realize both well-tuned bokeh effects, while minimizing disturbance in dual-line smear of linear-shaped objects naturally blended into the overall bokeh effect.
The result: the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO VC sustains the tradition of excellence in optical design while extending the limit in cutting-edge optical performance and beautiful bokeh.
Featuring VC with Shift Compensation
An accelerometer has been newly integrated into Tamron's highly accredited VC to compensate for shakes on the x-y plane.
The accelerometer in unison with a gyro sensor detects and enables motion compensation for camera shakes for a maximum efficiency in image stabilization optimized for distance ranges from infinity to macro.
Optimally Tuned USD Actuator for Macro Photography with Manual Override for Instantaneous Focus Control
The USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) control software has been optimized for macro photography with increased focusing speed and positional accuracy when shooting in close-up settings. The AF drive responds rapidly yet quietly to zero in on the photographer's point of interest and the Manual Focus Override enables instant shift in focus when necessary.
Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction
Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction has been improved to an exceptionally high standard in lens protection, preventing any intrusion of dirt, dust, or raindrops. A rubber seal protects each switch on the lens and sealing member is applied to the mechanical interface between the focus ring and the lens housing. The new construction further expands opportunities for shooting, ensuring reliability even in harsh, windy conditions and immediately after rainfall.
Additional Features
LD and XLD Lens Elements
The optical construction includes one LD (Low Dispersion) glass and two XLD (extra Low Dispersion) glass elements, that in consonance, helps to control lateral and on-axis chromatic aberrations at a very high level. While both offer significantly low dispersion characteristics compared to regular glass materials, the XLD provides prominent dispersion properties across the visible spectrum.
Circular Aperture to Produce a Smooth-Edged Bokeh
A 9-blade diaphragm is configured to retain a smooth, circular-shaped aperture opening even when stopped down by two stops from the wide-open aperture. This produces a smooth-edged bokeh in background light spots and avoids rugged aperture geometry.
Reduction in Flare and Ghosting: Superiority of eBAND Coating
eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating work in tandem to achieve exceptional anti-reflection. These technologies enable dramatic cut-off of ghosting and flare when shooting against the sun or under adverse lighting situations to deliver high-fidelity images without inducing noise.
eBAND Coating is a nano-structured layer deployed on the lens element surface. In addition to regular anti-reflection coatings, eBAND Coating offers higher transmissivity and significant improvement in anti-reflection characteristics especially against angulated incident rays.
Fluorine Coating
Fluorine coating, originally developed for use in industrial optics applications, has now been applied to the lens to offer long-lasting oil and water repellency. The water-and-oil-repellant coating applied to the front element surface instantly repels dirt or smudges for ease of cleaning and maintenance. The coating is also durable to accompany the photographer on outdoor travels for years to come.
Focus Limiter
As the shooting distance to the subject is determined, the photographer can choose to manually limit the travel range of the focusing group. This reduces the amount of time that it takes to focus on the targeted subject, making it possible for swift AF operation and preventing a precious photographic moment from slipping away.
Internal Focusing (IF) System
With the IF system, the working distance from the front element to the subject does not change during focusing. The distance of 139mm is maintained even during close-ups. This allows the photographer to secure distance away from live, sensitive subjects and to prevent a photographer's shadow from intruding and disrupting a precious photographic moment.
Full-Time Manual Focus Override Mechanism
A USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) is used for the AF driving system in the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO VC. The integration of a full-time manual focus override mechanism enables a photographer shooting with AF to instantly make fine focusing adjustments with manual focus, without having to switch back and forth between AF and manual focus modes.
SP 90mm Characteristics
1:1 Macro Photography
Minute objects are projected on the camera's image sensors at a magnification ratio of 1:1 so that the photographer can enjoy a macro world on print that would otherwise be impossible to experience with the naked eye.
Versatile Lens
The SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO VC is a versatile lens that allows the photographer to enjoy shooting in a wide variety of circumstances. The lens can be used particularly for macro photography as well as for portraiture by taking advantage of the fast F/2.8 aperture and remarkable bokeh capability. Photographers can take advantage of the versatility to approach subjects for tabletop photography, as well as to capture distant views for landscape photography with its outstanding resolving power.
History of Tamron Macro Lenses
The SP 90mm F/2.5 (Model 52B) was Tamron's first 90mm macro lens released in 1979. The general perception of appropriate use for a macro lens back then was for its close-ups, especially in the professional world, such as for documenting minute details for academic purposes and storing photographs for documentary records.

The general perception of appropriate use for a macro lens back then was for its close-ups, especially in the professional world, such as for documenting minute details for academic purposes and storing photographs for documentary records.
Since then, the macro lens has become highly valued by professional and amateur photographers alike for its wide-range of use in situations that were once considered unimaginable, as it gained popularity in portrait photography. It even adopted the tagline, "the portrait macro lens", which came to be widely propagated with time.
The arrival of the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD (Model F017), renewed by vast improvements in performance and design, is destined to mark a new change. Compatible with Nikon DSLR cameras.
