I've been converting 35mm film using a PrimeFilm XA. But, it's a very slow and laborious process, especially for the highest resolution offered. The Nikon ES-2 seemed like it would a good alternative. I decided to give it a shot (no pun intended), and also purchased a Nikkor 60mm/2.8. The ES-2 is designed to be used with this lens. If one decided to use a different copy lens, adapter rings would be required. The ES-2 seemed well made. However, using the carriage for 35mm mounted slides, I noticed that there was some wobbliness once set into viewer channel. This meant that every time a different slide is inserted, you have to ensure that it sits squarely in the viewer. I'm sure this would be a minor inconvenience to most. I've since found an offshore knock-off at half the price. It's very well made, and will work with many types of copy lenses.

It works exactly as advertised, except I have so many negatives, and is pretty time-consuming. I purchased it for my Nikon D850, and I am unsure if the other Nikon Camera models also have this option built in. Consider converting negative to digital when taking downtime, watching junk TV, or listening to music.

I bought this to digitize a large collection of old 35mm slides and a few negatives. I also have the previous version - the ES-1, but it works much better for slides than negatives. The negative carrier in the ES-2 really adds to its utility.

Very well made. (As it had better be, for the price.) Once I've got it on the camera, I can scan a roll of negatives in about 4 minutes, maybe less. I bounce a flash off a reflective white surface (the side of an Ikea shelf) and get perfect, bright, even lighting. Works with lots of other lenses and obviously cameras. You may have to get creative with spacers - I'm using a Canon 5D with a 100mm macro, the supplied spacers weren't enough, so I'm using an extension tube. The only slowdown is sometimes the autofocus won't be able to zero in on a particular negative, requiring you to use manual or shine a light into the negative, so there is enough for the AF sensors to grab on to. Otherwise I've gotten great results with autofocus.

Having taken a lot of B&W and color pictures with a Nikkormat EL between 1972 and 1998, and, and with a nearly brand new Nikon D5 for the past couple years I?ve accumulated a lot of negatives. It?s expensive to get them processed. If one has a lot of negatives and a decent printer the thoughtful consideration to DYI picture development may interest you.

It?s a Nikon product, used on a Nikkor lens, so you know it will work. I believe that ?one at a time? tranfers are better quality than laying out a large number of slides or negatives on a scanner.

The kit contains all the items needed to mount film negatives into (onto) a tray which will compensate six pictures. A slow process compared to an equivalent printer like a number of Epson scanners, which normally holds twelve negatives. The process did work fairly well, however. The ES-2 adapter has a slot or groove for stopping each negative in a focusable position to allow a proper shot with the Nikon D850 camera.

I use the ES-2 with a Nikon D850. It can be mounted only with Nikon?s AF-S DX Micro 40mm f/2.8G, AF-S Micro 60mm f/2.8 ED, or AF Micro 60mm f/2.8D- I wish I had of paid a bit more attention to this earlier ! It will not work with a 50 or 100 mm lens. I ended up buying a AF Micro 60 mmf2.8D for the complete "Kit". The 60mm lenses requires a 62mm adapter ring (included with ES-2 kit). The actual slide holder is well constructed. but I did have a bit of a time getting it locked down on the lens. Once set up with a good light source, it is very quick to focus (AF touchscreen ) and shoot. I was pleased with the resulting digital images. Since I am not looking for archival images, I saved them as Jpeg Fine and they looked great on a big (27 in) monitor. Certainly as good as a projected slide image. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is that I had to buy a specific lens ( about $250) additional to make it work. It seems better than scanning, by a long shot.

Product is Great but buyer should be sure they have the right lens 42MM so it will fit. Used it so far on old slides in our garage and then transferred the pictures from the camera to Light Room Classic and the photos are like new and most important digitized to show them.

I'm using the ES2 with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f2.8 manual focus lens. It makes getting focus a bit more difficult, but results with the D780 are pretty good. Feels like a bit of play in the film holder and the device itself, so have to be careful if using uncut negatives.

Used as intended with the D850 and the 60mm lens, this works as expected - which is great! I have both slides and film to scan. This takes practice. The holders are not very tight, so you have to make sure the picture is properly aligned. I also found the focus to be a little tricky at times, depending on the picture. Having said all of that, I think this is much easier than rigging up a tripod to shoot over a lightbox.

Works as advertise. Very effective tool to digitalize cardboard holder slides and film negative strips. Using Nikon D3400 (24mp) and Nikkor 40mm DX macro.

This is a great bit of kit; my only beef is it?s a bit too expensive. I used a copy stand and light table type rig for digitizing negs, and this is SOOO much faster and easier. I have a Pentax full frame, not a Nikon, and use this on my Pentax FA 50mm macro lens. It has 52mm filter rings, so this just screws on the front. And it worked with the normal tube; I didn?t need any extensions. The film holder is pretty good. I wish it grabbed curly negative film a bit better, but holds it reasonably flat. No option for including the spool holes in the photo that I could figure out, other than sliding in the negative in without the holder. With some other tubes and/or step up or down rings and a macro lens with a suitable focus distance this can work great with other cameras. With the ES-2?s longer tube and step up rings it fit on the Oly 60mm macro and M-1iii at acceptable size.

It is impressive the quality reproduction that the D850 and a this simple copying add on is capable of?I?m now going back through my slide trays and having a ball seeing quality copies on my ipad?what a pleasure! Get this ES-2 or the full adapter kit and have a ball?..

The ES-2 simplifies and expedites converting large collections of negatives and slides to digital files. It comes with the proper adapters for use on the new Z mount 50mm macro, which also works well in conjunction with the ES-2. The dispersion screen does a good job of softening any light source, including the harshest LED arrays. Overall a well designed product.

Personally I think its overpriced since its made of plastic. Adorama sells it at the lowest price I could find. The kit comes with everything you need and it works great. I wish the slides tray had more slots. If this was made of metal it would last longer, plastic has its limits.

If you own a high pixel count Nikon this is the hot ticket. I am using it with a D850 with a older Nikon 60mm D Macro which allows me to either convert the negative into a high res positive jpg, or I can capture the image raw and convert it in photoshop. The former is quick and easy, the later gives a remarkable amount of control. Workflow is so much better then the dedicated scanners I have used in the past. Quality is what you would expect from Nikon. I have heard that there is an issue with thicker slides but there is a work around which involves adding another holder. Other than that I am totally pleased.

When I attached the digitalize to my camera, it only took a minute to calibrate the system and I was making wonderful copies of some of my very old 35mm slides

First, way over priced plastic. With older negatives they often curve and the holder isn't able to keep them completely flat, so your captured image isn't as good as you might expect. It is certainly faster than using a flat bed scanner, which is why I gave it one more star.

Images are 90% sharp. Not fully. One seemed almost perfect. Not good enough for print, but ok for the internet. Does fit on the 7 with 60MM Micro lens.

This adapter set works very well with my D810. I used a Nikon 60mm/2.8D AF Macro lens as shown in the second photo. I followed the enclosed instructions and used only ambient light as suggested. I mainly use a f-stop of "11". The other f-stop I used is "10". I used a Nikon MC-36 to release the shutter speed which runs from 1/2 s. to 10 s. depending on the level of ambient light and the ISO I chose, which was between 64 and 1000. My set-up was mounted on a tripod with a ball-head. I give 4-1/2 stars instead of five for the following reasons: 1) The instructions are not clear as to whether the FH-5 should be inserted with the "MADE IN JAPAN" marking facing away from the lens or towards the lens. I find copies made with the marking facing away from the lens sharper than the other way around (see my first set-up photo). Others may not agree with me on this. Sample photo of "Lahore Gate" was made with the marking facing away from the lens. 2) It would be nice to have the FH-5 modified to have more than two slots, perhaps three or four? Regardless, I am very happy Nikon came up with this product as I have thousands of slides from the 1980s to just recently (I was a dinosaur) waiting to be digitized. I did consider buying a Nikon Coolscan from 20 years ago, but, it costs plenty back then.

Excellent build quality and function. Marketing this as an accessory for the D850 does this unit a great disservice. It mounts to 62mm lens filter threads with one of two supplied adapters which provide the correct focal length for 60mm FX or 40mm DX lenses.

It an ok system but way over priced. I would like to set up multiple sliders at once but the price per slider to get extras is not even close to being worth it. If you have lots of 126 negatives it will take forever. They look similar to 35mm but are not the same so they don't line up in the slider. 126 used to be so common you would think there would be a 126 slider.

I've been sitting on the fence over this adapter set for some time, considering the constant feed of information about it being for the D850. I have a D750 and D3, and about 5,000 slides that I want to digitize, many of which are damaged from the fungus that seems to follow me all over the world. Using this Digitizing Adapter set, my very first application was a resounding success. Using my D750 with a 60mm Micro Nikkor, and the adapters to make it work, I was able to reproduce a slide image into digital with incredible accuracy. I now copy about 100 slides a day, and the slides most damaged by fungus are copied as a monochrome image, which masks the damage and allows me to review my various shots over the years. My only disappointment with this setup has to do with the entire Adapter Set. I tried for several months to find the components I wanted for the work I wanted to do, but was only able to get two of the three components. Nikon only sells this as a kit, and will not sell individual components. Two of the parts in the kit will spend the next 10 years in a drawer, unused. That's why only four stars.

Fast and easy, surprising quality

I own two professional film scanners. While the results from these units are good, they are far too slow to reasonably digitize a large amount of work. Therefore, their use has been relegated to carefully digitizing my published transparencies. I wouldn’t even consider attempting to work through a pile of pages of 35mm negatives, that would be torture by boredom. The advent of the D850 foretold of a negative capture function that caught my fancy. Given the high resolution of the sensor I was ...
