A thrifty way to do macro photography!!

Great for macro photography. An inexpensive alternative to do macro without the higher cost of a macro lens. If you do casual macro this is the way to go. Can never beat a real macro lens but the Cannon 72 close-up lens works just fine.

What's a close-up lens do?

Don't think of it as a magnifier. It lets you put the front of the lens closer to the object. Now you have more pixels of the object and fewer pixels of unwanted background. Depth of field is reduced as well because the object fills more of the frame. You'll probably want to use a tripod. Doesn't everyone? There are websites and books that explain how to calculate the effects of close-up lenses. I carry a small notebook with depth-of-field and minimum focusing distances for various lenses I use with other c/u lenses. The Canons weren't available when I wanted a 72-mm to go on a Canon 28-135 mm so I bought another double-element lens from Adorama. It goes everywhere. Even though I have a 60-mm Canon macro, I use the c/u lens more often because it's convenient. It halves the minimum focusing distance. I mostly use it for flowers and cooperative bugs.

A must buy close-up lens

It is not only for Canon but for any camera brand you own. This is a must buy product if you want to step into macro photography with less cost. Period. It has been recommand by many experts from my web searching. Even you have a macro lens this will help and amaze you into another world without decrease the quality much; at least no reduction was found from my photos.

500D greatf but not everything expected

Excellent optics, well built and typical fine Canon quality. Only disapointment that I could not get that much addtional macro using my Sigma 18MM-200MM lens that I purchased the 500D for so that I would not need to cary a dedecated macro lens when trying to lite. I may try another 500D on my Canon 70MM-300MM telephoto lens. This will require a smaller mount than that of the Sigma lens.

Wow--amazing little device.

Quick way to get macro shots without the expense of a macro lens. The Canon far surpasses the cheap "close up" lenses--the difference is astonishing. If you use a Nikon, as I do, just get the inexpensive step-up ring.

Did not work for me.

I bought to use this on a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. I got very little magnification, it may work on other lenses, but is not worth the price to use on the 18-200mm. I did return it.

Built well but limited improvement

The lens itself is built well. I do not find much improvement in close-up magnification.

A terrific addition to my macro lens...

The 250D/500D series close-up lenses incorporates a double-element achromatic design for maximum optical performance, while the standard 500 series features single-element construction for maximum economy. The 250 close up lenses changes the closest focusing distance from infinity to 250mm approx. 9.9", and the 500 close up lenses changes it to 500mm approx. 19.7".

Double-Element accessory attaches to front of lens (For lenses from 70mm to 350mm)
