This is a high-quality lens and not a diopter

This two element lens by Canon is a joy to use for close ups of flowers and other small items. This is a high-quality lens and not a diopter.

This filter is amazing on how it works with taking close-up photos

This filter is amazing on how it works with taking close-up photos. I used it on a 24-105mm lens and was very impressed. Would definitely recommend it for macro photography.

Nice flexibility

Macro/Micro lenses are better. Period. Sharper, flat field of curvature, optimized for use at short distances. Better pictures for close detail. That said, I'm keeping this because it fits into my 77mm filter stack and can make the 70-200mm f/2.8 a passable close up lens. It is more compact to carry around than tubes. If I don't have the room for the 70-180mm micro I'm packing this. Images are "good enough" for many uses.

Ok for the price

If you want to take amazing macro shoots buy a macro lens. For the amount of time I need it, it doesn't make sense to spend much money on a lens so this was a great alternative .

Good

To use this filter one must take the time . This is not a bad filter I oun it . you have to ajust you lens focus slowly and have a way to lock your zoom in place so it dose not drift out . It dose what it says it will do . I love mine and would not trade it off for nothing . I use it on my 70-300mm canon lens . I use a bellows to ajust my lens in and out between the camra and the lens . macro is macro , It not like taking photos of people . one has to have time .

Good Value

I have the Canon 400mm/f5.6L and I like it, because the image quality is quite good. What I never liked about it is the close-up focusing distance, well there is no such thing. The closest it can focus on is about 11'. So I bought the 500D close-up lens. I know it is made for lenses from 70mm-300mm, but it works just fine for the 400mm. Now I can focus as close as about 22" and the image quality is good. It also does work well with wide-angle lenses. So, the only thing I can say about this filter is, that I like it (a lot).

i would rather invest in a macro lens

i thought it would be a good idea to have it in my bag in case of a not planned macro opportunity. I made a couple of test shots with nikon 28-300mm on d800 - it was ok. and then i took the same shots win my nikon 105mm macro lens - wow, the difference was obvious. I returned the filter right away.

OUTSTANDING CLOSEUP LENS

Great relatively inexpensive tool for macro photography. I use it on my Nikon lenses.

Interesting lens, not super easy to use

Bought the 500D after watching Bryan Peterson do some of his magic with it on a youtube video. Struggled to get decent results with it. I've now got a Tokina macro that I love. Its a great value and far easier to get good results.

Awesome addition. Many uses.

While bulky compared to standard filters, this is great as a travel macro lens substitute. You want some macro (close up) capability while traveling but don't want to pack another lens? This is the way to go. Don't have to remove your lens at switch to macro. Image is excellent.

Great lens! Would buy it again.

Great for use with focusing rail to produce high magnification, and to also increase depth by use of focus stacking.

A "Must Have" product for Macro

I use this lens to increase the magnification capability of, primarily, my Sigma 150 macro. It works great, but a focusing rail is a necessity.

Trust Bryan Peterson

Saw Bryan Peterson on a PPSOP and the great pictures he shot. And knew it was cheaper than a macro lense so it was for me.

It is easy to use, convinient

Can be carried in your pocket as a back up for macro photography. If you go out to shoot some other assignment and stumbel onto great macro opertunity you are ready. No need to carry macro lens all trhe time. All said you must work with product to gain experience on how best to use it.

Amazing lens-better than a macro lens

A professional photographer (who always uses Nikon) recommended this lens stating that this is one time Canon exceded other products with their lens quality. I use this for macro photography, indoors and outdoors. I get side tracked when I see an insect and start shooting it (figuratively) more than the flowers. I like shooting spider webs and this lens picks up the detailed web along with a clear photo of the spider and his captives. It has expanded my photographic capabilities beyond belief.

Everything I expected it to be.

While maybe not the final answer for Macro photography, it let's you get in close with just about any lens. A bonus in my mind is that you don't have to pull the lens every time you want to add it or remove it. The fewer times the lens comes off the camera, the better. It's a bit thicker and heavier than I imagined, although it's not a problem in any way. Only minor issue is that it may not fit in some filter cases.

A must have

A great addition to my camera bag. Works great with my Sigma 70-200, and for even more fun I'll use my extension tubes. I've even tried it a few times with wider lenses, and was pleased with the results.

Macro made easy !!

I have used this filter for photographing Spring Flowers Up Close. It provides a full frame of detailed flowers. I use it with my Canon 24-70 2.4 lense with the 1.4 teleconverter and get fantastic pictures from aperatures from f/2.8 to f/22. Makes a big difference in composing pictures I wanted for my gallery.

great if you don't shoot macro often

Very good image quality. This is a great alternative to buying (or carrying) a dedicated macro lens if you only shoot close-up once in a while. If you plan on doing a lot of macro and want top image quality, buy a dedicated macro lens.

Limited hands on

I bought this mainly to throw on the Nikkor 300/f4 for macro type capabilities if I found myself without my macros. I have used it little so far but have seen superb shots taken with in in forums and on Flickr. It is heavy but that is expected due to the multi element design

Very versitile addition to regular lens.

I have only had the 500D lens for a short time. I have mostly experimented by shooting flowers and model trains. These have come out very well. The lens is recomended for the 70 to 200mm lens. I have use it also with the 24 to 7omm lens and have had extremly good success with it. It is no harder to use than with the 70 to 200mm lens. I am very happy with it and recomend it to anyone that does not wish to buy a macro lens.

Happy With My Purchase

I've been, primarily, a portrait photographer and wanted to have fun with some closeups w/out buying a dedicated macro lens just yet. Using this on my Canon 24-70L has netted me some really fun shots.

Excellent Macro lens

I use this lens together with the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L tele zoom lens. The results are very clear and sharp images. From time it can be difficult to get the auto-focus to work. I mostly use it with manual focus. The end results are very nice!

Good accessory

Excellent option for getting close up shots without a dedicated macro lens. THis isn't sharp at the corners but in most images taken close up the attention is not there.

no regrets

Rather than lugging a macro lens, I now just carry with me this close up lens. It is easy to mount and not heavy or bulky as a macro lens. It also saves me from having to change lenses when I need to shoot macro. Overall I am happy with this purchase.

It's almost always in my bag

By Papa R.

A wonderful way to turn your 70-200 into a macro lens. I always include this in my bag when carrying my 70-200mm. It takes up very little space and you never know when the opportunity might arise to use it. It's not as good optically as the EF 180 or EF 100 macros I have but then again its a lot less expensive and easier to carry. If you haven't discovered the fun of macro photography - I'm addicted - you owe it to yourself to get one and discover a whole new world and dimension to your ph...
