Great micro lens

Definitely best macro lens I've had so far. I was using 100m one for many years before this upgrade. Still in process of learning to work with this new lens, only "negative" not in negative meaning, it is pretty heavy so good tripod head is a must and I need to upgrade mine. The kit that came with it is pretty cool and worthy adding for sure!

Canon 180 mm

This lens is absolutely worth every penny. I am using it for my flower photography and the images are crisp and soft just where I need them to be. A little pricey and a bit heavy but would buy again.

Great macro lens,

I haven't had this lens that long and have only used it a couple of times, experimenting with flowers in my back yard. So far I am very pleased with the quality of the photos and the ease of use. I would recommend a tripod as this lens is quite heave, especially on a Mark IV. It also came as a bundle so there were extras with the lens. I always like extras and would definitely recommend to anyone serious about macro photography.

long reach

Macro shooting sometimes requires distance between you and the subject for a variety of reasons. Using the 180 allows for me to make up that stand off distance and still get an excellent macro shot

Worth Every Penny

Like most of you, I would love to have all the "L" glass I can get my hands on. Unfortunately I don't have 20K lying around to do that. Having said that, I take macro seriously, It is the most fascinating type of photography to me. Challenging, and so many things not easily seen on a day to day basis. The extra distance you get with 180mm is great. The image quality is outstanding at every setting. And it is very well made. The bokeh is very very nice, too. But it's not just a macro. It captures superb images when used as a 180mm telephoto. I can't say enough about this lens. I love it. Others have mentioned focusing issues at macro distance, but I have that problem with all my macro lenses. You should be focusing manually at that magnification anyway. Again, It hurt to lay out a big wad of money but I have forgotten all about that. The lens is worth every penny.

I'm in love

I love this lens. I already own the Canon 100mm macro lens and the picture quality is superb. I can say no different about this lens. First the obvious, it is more "far reaching" than the 100mm and in times when you can't physically bridge the distance between you and the subject, this lens fits the bill. Focusing time is about the same between these two lenses, but when I am doing macro photography I 50% manually focus anyway. Pictures are crisp and clear. Before I received this lens as a gift I had been debating between cheaper manufacturers ($749) and the Canon ([$]). With such a wide difference btw the price I set out to view pictures submitted by users of both. At the end I had clearly decided in favor of the canon and decided to save up for the better of the two. Luckily I than got it as a gift from the Bf and didn't have to wait. :-)

Great Glass

I have both the Canon 100 and 180 macro. The 180 is an excellent lens, especially for any macro subject that stays still, e.g. flowers, or resting insects. The 180 macro allows me to be further away from Butterflies and Dragonflies so that they won't be spooked. My only downside, which is not the lens fault, is that Canon didn't make it an IS lens as well. Maybe someday. I would absoluetly recommend this lens.

This is a great Macro

This is a great Macro. Purchase this ONLY if you are going to do a lot of serious Macro work. If you are not sure, get a few close up lenses to play with before you invest in this lens. It is expensive to just sit on the shelf after a few months of using it. The auto-focusing is easy enough, but you'll need to use manual to get just what you want when using the Macro function, a bit difficult for us with poorer eyesight. In spite of that I manage to get some great photos among my many pictures. The depth of field is shallower than other types of lenses, even at the smaller apertures, so spend the time to focus on what is your main subject of interest. The Bokah is pretty good and allows you to set the focus on your point of interest instead of the background. It is not a light lens and I recommend a sling style strap for carrying it on your camera around in the field. The 180mm works great for outdoor close ups as well as portraits. You can get a bit further away from the subject and be less conspicuous for taking portraits and snapshots of people in crowds. A monopod works great for the landscape shots, but when you start into the Macro shots, a good tripod is a must. Also, get a good light ring, as the light gathering at high magnifications is slow, it takes forever and your subject may move or may fly away. The depth of field is too shallow to hand hold at any great magnification. This is a great lens and has great potential for great photos for those willing to invest the time.

Great lens

I'm blessed to live within 2 hrs drive of about 20 of the top horticultural gardens in the country. This lens allows me to get the shot without getting too close that I either cast a shadowon my subject, scare it away, (if it's a bug), or step into areas that are to be protected. Having a greater working distance also give you room to use lighting or reflectors.

Macro Up Close From A Distance

My long working distance Macro out of three other Canon Macro lenses. The lens is relatively expensive and heavy, but how could it be anything else and have the feel and the quality output. The 180 is as near to perfection, at its working distance, as is possible to be. Canon has done it again. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words!

Sharpest Glass in This Price Range

Due to weight and no image stabilization I use with a mono pod or tripod. I have used it for wildlife, birds, butterflies, what ever. It will hunt for focus, but if you can, preset the focus distance and then use AF. For macro, of course, use manual focus. It has provided some award winning sharp pictures.

Fandangtastic Lens

Have had this lens for around a month, 1,100 pictures mostly of wild life, butterflies, bee's, etc. The sharpest lens I have owned. Use it with a monopod and it has become a limited use walk-about lens. On a tripod a great macro lens. On the 50D I'll shoot things that used to be reserved for the 100-400mm L, crop the results and they are sharper than the 100-400 @ 400mm. It is a heavy lens, but with a monopod no problem. Autofocus, as has been written up before, is slow and in low light [shadows] hunts, so this is below par with the rest of the capabilities. Expensive, but in this case for picture quality you get what you pay for. I highly recommend Adorama, great place to continue to do business with - Thanks

Wow Can You Say SHARP

Can I say Wow again? I had wanted this lens for some time and got it just before I went on a 2 month trip to South Africa where I expected to take lots of macro photos of plants and did just that along with the ME-24 double flash unit. I left behind the 100mm Macro and missed it but learned how to adjust to this lens. Highly recommended for quality macro work.

Sharp lens with excellent contrast

This lens is a joy to use, I have used the sigma and tamron versions of the 180 macro lens and the Canon produces the best results. The lens is sharp wide open and produces images with excellent contrast and beautiful colors. If you can afford this lens there is no reason you should bother trying the third party options.
